As the offseason progresses from the Draft to Free Agency, RealCavsFans.com introduces the twelfth episode of the second season of the Rubber Rim Job podcast.

@The Oi and @RchfldCavRaised reconnect and take a trip down memory lane to recall the season 20 years ago that led to our NBA Draft lottery win and the acquisition of LeBron James:

  • What were we personally doing in 2002-2003
  • Ricky Davis, DeJuan Wagner, Darius Miles and Gordon Gund's tongue
  • @J_J chimes in with memories of seeing James and some future pros play high school ball in California
  • @Randolphkeys insists we remember Clown outfits and Milt Palacio
  • @CBBI incriminates himself and kicks dirt on a blind man
  • @foucault87 sprinkles in some optimism for the offseason
  • @The Human Q-Tip makes his RRJ season debut (well after the season is over)
  • @2 For The Brew delivers with his usual clutch infusion of Cavs history

Call in and shoot your shot with a :24 second take to be part of the next show 216-282-6289 or join the conversation by creating a profile, reading the rules and adding to the best NBA fan forum online at https://realcavsfans.com

I was able to listen over half of it so far - thanks again for doing this!

“People dressed as wizards, hobbits, and even pirates at that time” :chuckle: @Randolphkeys

I forgot about no one really tried to tank at that time. There wasn’t much of trading multiple first round picks to give away or rebuilding. It was more getting first round picks if a team wanted to trade up.

Just what the doctor ordered. This was a great pod, and Jigo's recall of the hoops you had to jump through just to follow your team in that era had me really nostalgic. Until I moved to Cleveland the teams I called my own were far from the place I lived.

I didn't even find many of these Cavs outlets until YEARS later. My reputation as a Cavs fan online comes from a forum that has nothing to do with the Cavs at all lol. But from hundreds of miles away my reaction to the LeBron James news was pretty hype. I had made the decision to move back up North not too long before the lottery.

Almost 20 years later I don't regret it. This place was home before it was actually home.

The wildest thing was the recall of what the teams looked like and what the league actually was like. I remember it like it was yesterday. But still....

The music parts are always appreciated. In 2003 I was a super GRUMP. I was not liking the direction of mainstream hip hop in the slightest. Pretty much Dave (RIP) from De La Soul on "Stakes Is High" level.

Just realized you guys were on YouTube as well and subscribed ! Great job guys
Looking forward to your pod where you talk about the last 48 hours.

Im intrigued. Why should I listen to this? Two sentence pitch. Let’s hear it.

I tried to get Jigo and Rch talking about the cosplay phenomenon with their age group and younger back in the early 2000s, but they didn't take the bait. I was in my mid-20s when teens started going out dressed like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter characters on a random weekend, so I just thought of cosplay as proof that I'm too grown to hang with this next generation.

Anyways, I hope we see more time capsules in the future. This was a very fun episode!

By the time we played your call in the episode, Jig had been singing RKelly ignition under his breath for an hour straight with any dead air and I was scrolling Facebook doing research on some of the flings from that era to see if they had fallen off :chuckle:

We really got into character ourselves and by days end I had listened to more early 2000s hip hop than I want to admit

Took me a few days to be a 40 yr old man at heart again

Storytellers establish setting early. You guys covered what the cool kids were up to, I covered the dorks.

Dudes - bang up job as always. You guys (including the callers) have such an encyclopedic recall of these details, both bball and era.
This was up there. I think you guys are getting better too.
Too many great parts to recap them all. I can relate most to being competitive and keeping that mindset out of my Cavs viewing, like Jigs, except I am not 5’2”.

All of the callers were just *beyond* during this one. They always are, but there’s something about how we all were connected, pre-internet era, around the country (world), having that lottery day moment.

This one hit different. I was pretty meh on the time capsule concept but couldn’t have been more wrong. Again. Hats off!

Brilliant idea from @RchfldCavRaised here for sure.

Gave the audience an opportunity to shine. Thanks for the compliment.

I’d do another one soon if he would, but production time is a thing. Life gets in the way.
