As the season inches closer and the exhibition season winds down, RealCavsFans.com introduces the second episode of the third season of the Rubber Rim Job podcast.

@The Oi and @RchfldCavRaised go down memory lane while also shining a light on some of the rookies play in this preseason:

  • Jig does his research and builds a bridge from Radiohead to REM
  • Doing whatever it took to get Joe Tait radio broadcasts back in the day
  • Exploring the legacy of Mark Price (forgive the video overlay during his highlights)
  • Emoni Bates and Dean Wade showing that they both want to contribute when the games really count
  • Props to Chris Fedor for putting up a triple double during his segment on Zach Lowe's podcast
  • And Rchfld shines a light on one of his top 5 albums of all time

I butchered the video shares during this episode (its the preseason for me too). There's a overlay that I was supposed to close on the screenshare :party smiley 004:

I'll share the Youtube links for each of the vids in order here for those of you who actually want to see what we are laughing at:

Mark Price 3pt 1994

Price was certainly born in the wrong era. The NBA was not ready for him. Drazen (RIP) was another guy of that era who was ahead of his time. I loved Price. I just wish that era of Cavs bodies held up longer. They just broke down.... kind of at the same time.

Total aside, since it was brought up and there seemed to be confusion: Bates Motel was envisioned as a metaphorical place, like "Eason Island" and not an actual nickname for the player. Still might suck, but I like it :D

Now THAT I can get on board with.

When he goes into Psycho Mode he’s taking em to the Bates Motel.

I think this reference relies on the fan being too engrossed in the game to think the reference through. Otherwise you risk picturing Emoni clad in his dead mother’s dress as he exacts his Oedipal revenge fantasies on unwitting hotel visitors.

Which honestly, sounds more terrifying than anything I’ve ever seen Charles Oakley or James Johnson do on the floor. Might be something to this…

The metaphor should really extend to "He's killing them out there" or similar. Though maybe an opportunity for some Larry Johnson-esque add campaign.

Drazen Petrovic would average 30ppg right now

He was a DOG on both ends

Think Manu Ginobili as a scorer with more range, and Matthew Dellavedova as a defender. He was fearless.

I went to a playoff game against the New Jersey Nets where he nearly got his face broken by leading with his face while fighting over a big man screen chasing Price I think. Happened early in the game and he refused to adjust and just kept fighting around the screens face first.

By the end of the game, everyone in the section around my dad and I were talking about how much they respect that he was defending like that and also lead the Nets with 40 pts that game

I loved (and feared that guy). That Nets team was tough. He was the first player I saw who regularly would shoot pull-up threes on the break. It blew my mind at the time. Even guys like Price and Miller didn't dribble into a pull-up three like that. Maybe off a pass, but not pull up. The way he played was 15-20 years ahead of his time. I was gutted when I heard he died in a car crash. I had so much respect for his game and how he (and Schremph) were opening doors for Euro players.

An interesting topic might be speculation on how various Cavs would have played in other eras. Much like we speculate that Price would have balled out in today's game or that LeBron would have been even more dominant in the 80's.

I say this after every episode, but once again, great job guys!!

Mark Price shot 48.6% from 3PT over the course of 80 games in the 1987-1988 Season.

48.6%.

He shot better than 40% five times and in his career, he peaked at 5.3 3PT Attempts a game.

For the balance of his career with the Cavs he only averaged 3.3 3PTA per game.

Why or how Wilkens never put two and two together who knows.

But, in today's NBA Mark Price would be averaging 8-9 3PTA a game and averaging around 23-24 PPG along with 8-9 APG.
