Tracking oddities and achievements of those Cleveland ballplayers who were both beloved and bemused before they were sent away to Antonetti & Chernie's Isle of Misfit Toys

Francona liked Ernie since he was willing to step into any role and do it! Peeps don't know just how valuable that is for a marathon of a season...

Just wait until Fry gets his 15 minutes on the mound!

Call me Ernie, or Big Ern’

Benson and Jones went 0-6 with 5 K's on Sunday. Benson was particularly fooled by Charlie Morton's curveball (3 K's in 3 AB's).

Benson 3-5 with a double and triple last nite. Now has a line of : .278/381/467/846

Meanwhile the light hitting Brennan’s numbers:
270.303.395.698

It looks like Benson, Nolan Jones, and Owen Miller are having their first taste of success at the major league level this season. We'll see if any of them can bust out and become stars or whether they will end up with careers like Tyler Naquin (.264/.765) and Lonnie Chisenhall (.268/.747), guys who had flashes but never put it all together.

Chisenhall is the guy who was the most unfortunate, IMO. He was drafted out of college as a shortstop and shifted to third base, but he always struggled with his defense and I'm sure it affected him at the plate. In 2015, at age 26, he hit .203 playing 3rd base (172 AB's). They put him in right field, a less demanding position where he could focus on hitting, and he hit .303/.790 in 142 AB's. It was night and day.

In 2016 he played all but 20 at-bats in right field, hitting .290/.784. In 2017 he battled injuries but still hit .310/.930 in right field, but in only 126 AB's. His last year, 2018, at age 29 he hit .325/.856 in 80 AB's in right field before recurring calf injuries ended his season and his career. The Pirates signed him for the 2019 season but he never got on the field again.

If the Guardians had moved Chisenhall to right field earlier and if his body hadn't let him down before he was 30 I think he could have had an outstanding career in Cleveland. He had a gorgeous swing but between his struggles to play 3rd base early and his calf injuries late he only had 3.5 seasons as a full-time right fielder, and he missed a lot of games with injuries in those years.

Wil Benson on fire as his breakthrough season continues. .293/388/500/888 Ops while providing speed and defense and power.

Meanwhile The FO”s and fans choice of Wil the thrill Brennan continues his mediocre play with a sad sack line of .275/305/402/707

Brennan is hitting .298/.768 against RHP's and .163/.433 against lefties in 43 AB's. We need to either bring up Oscar and play him against lefties (as well as pinch hit for Straw or Gallagher late in close games) or trade for Lane Thomas and use Will as the 4th outfielder instead of Arias.

Over the last 2 months and his last 170 PAs Brennan is slashing .313/.337/.454

Since June 1 when the rest of the team woke up he is slashing .319/.348/.478

Last 2 weeks he is slashing .310/.341/.452

He had enough PAs to finally have an accurate scouting report early on in the season, teams adjusted to him and pitched to him differently, and then he had to adjust back and he's done just that. He's one of the last players fans should be complaining about right now.
