I figured it was time to boot this topic up again. I've been doing Underdog best ball drafts for the past couple of weeks and am already on my second dynasty rookie draft. I am a degenerate.
My first dynasty rookie draft ended last week after a couple of days. It was a slow draft, naturally, and we kicked it off shortly after the actual NFL draft once we knew where everyone landed. I finished fourth out of twelve in this league last year and had the 1.10, 3.10, 4.10, and 5.10. The winner of the third place game gets the 1.09 in this league, hence why I am picking third worst despite finishing fourth. I traded my second during the season for Big Ben after Dak broke his leg and I needed a third QB for bye weeks. This is a superflex league, so having extra quarterbacks is never a bad thing. Hopefully I can flip Ben during the season and recoup an asset for him now that Dak is back and presumably healthy.
The first round played out about as terribly as possible for me. All five QBs went in the top nine, plus Harris, Etienne, Chase, and Pitts. Basically, every single player in my tier one for superflex plus Mac Jones, who I would have definitely took the shot on at the tenth pick in superflex. I was left debating between DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and Javonte Williams at ten, as those are my tier two guys. I had Bateman and Marshall in tier two before the NFL draft, but Bateman being paried with Lamar Jackson for the foreseeable future and Marshall dropping into the late second dropped them to my third tier for dynasty. I ultimately went with Smith. I didn't like clicking the draft button, but I wasn't getting any quality trade offers and so I went BPA. I didn't need a RB and Waddle scares me even more than Smith.
I drafted Anthony Schwartz with my third, Elijah Mitchell with my fourth, and Tamorrion Terry with my fifth. Not in love with that draft, but man the 2021 talent really dries up after the second. I just went high upside guys from the third on as a result. I don't expect any of them to do much this year, but maybe I get lucky and one of them fires.
The current draft I'm doing is a really unique dynasty league. It launched last year and the only players in the league are players that entered the NFL from 2020 onward. We did an auction draft last year with only 2020 rookies, and each subsequent draft is a standard draft where the order is based on potential points, or basically your potential top score if you had started your best possible roster every week. I went into the draft planning to put together a team for the future and lose in year one. I apparently didn't do a very good job of that, because I ended up in the championship game, and only lost because Jalen Hurts threw a garbage time pick to end the game in week sixteen, and losing those two points lost me a fantasy title. Thanks to the potential points rule, though, my actual draft position was 7th of 12.
Essentially, I backed my way into a win now team with Antonio Gibson, (now NFL starting QB) and Jalen Hurts, along with some other guys who, in this league, have some actual starting value going forward in AJ Dillon, Harrison Bryant, and Lynn Bowden. All this is a leadup to how disastrous that 1.07 ended up being for me. I absolutely felt that I needed to nail this pick. This is my first first rounder in a league where everyone has an insanely thin roster, and this is a pay league so I am highly motivated to fucking win. I was desperately hoping that either Chase or Pitts would fall to me. I don't expect Pitts to light it up in year one, but I still consider him a generational talent, and so he's exactly the type of guy you want in this league. I didn't want either of the top two RBs, because I've already got Antonio Gibson, and I didn't want to focus my roster too heavily on a position with such a short shelf life in a league where we're essentially building a team from scratch.
So naturally, the first four picks were three of the QBs I wanted (Lawrence, Lance, or Fields), plus one who I didn't want but probably would have taken at seven (Wilson) simply due to the fact that he was the number two pick and will get a shot to be a starting quarterback for the next few years. The next two picks, of course, were Pitts and Chase. I certainly wouldn't have drafted them in that order, but it fucked me nonetheless. I like Mac Jones, but man, I just couldn't pull the trigger on him at the 1.07 in a league where I needed this pick to land.
I ended up trading the pick, plus my third rounder, for CeeDee Lamb and the 10th pick in the 5th round. I love that deal in this league. He ended up taking Najee Harris, but I'd much rather have Lamb for the next five years. I haven't made my second round pick yet.
tl;dr I am a fantasy degenerate. And post your fantasy related shit for 2021 here.
