Ferry wants Cavs to keep Ilgauskas

New general manager is good friends with Z. Trade possible tonight

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sports writer

CLEVELAND - When he came to Cleveland from Lithuania in 1996, one of the first good friends Zydrunas Ilgauskas made was Danny Ferry.

Nine years later, Ferry finds himself in charge of keeping his buddy in town.

The Cavaliers hired Ferry as their general manager Monday. One of the biggest issues he faces in his first days on the job is how to deal with the two-time All-Star center.

Ilgauskas' six-year, $70.8 million contract expires Friday.

``Zydrunas is going to go into free agency and see what's out there are on the market,'' Ilgauskas' agent, Herb Rudoy, said Monday. ``That is a final decision, we have no interest in making to a deal with the Cavs before Friday.''

Ferry said during his introductory news conference that he wants to keep Ilgauskas. According to insiders, Ferry told Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert during his interview for the job that he felt keeping Ilgauskas was important.

``I'm very hopeful Zydrunas will be back here,'' Ferry said. ``I know he has tough decisions ahead of him, hopefully the decision is to remain in Cleveland.''

Initial discussions about a contract extension for Ilgauskas failed during the regular season. A person with knowledge of the talks said it has to do with the length of the contract as much as it is about money. Rudoy is believed to be shooting for a five-year deal, and the Cavaliers were looking for a three-year pact.

There are also complex issues over how the contract will be insured due to Ilgauskas' history of foot problems.

It isn't clear whether Ferry will even negotiate with Rudoy or allow another member of his staff do it because of how close he is to Ilgauskas. Rudoy said it certainly won't be a factor on his end.

``Yes, Danny is a very good friend,'' Rudoy said. ``But it will have no influence on Zydrunas' decision.''

I'm glad their relationship will ultimately secure Z's position here. But I don't like this move to the media: it's making it too much of a mix between personal lives and business lives. Rudoy seems like a sleazy a-hole, he's just going to cause trouble this off-season. I hope he doesn't try to negotiate any sign-and-trades...

This is actually kind of frightening. It seems like Z doesn't really want to be back. If he did, he would deal with the Cavaliers first and foremost, instead he wants to test the market.

This Z may very well already have on foot outside the door...

The thing is....

There really isn't anyone out there who will offer Z a ton of money with Curry, Chandler, and Dalembert out there as well.

The teams with the money (Atlanta, Charlotte, New Orleans) aren't going to throw max dollars at big Z.

I think we are going to end up resigning him by default.

Offer him a 5 year deal - 10mil the first, then 9, 7, 5, with an option for a 5th year at 5 mil. It might sound low, but you start low...

Everyone knows he's only got 3 years left in the tank. He'll close out his career playing for a friend and with a friend. He won't have to start over in a new town on a crap team (a team with the space to sign him). He knows the offense is somewhat built around him...with a new team, he will not be as effective as here, IMO.

Yes, he's testing the market. But we're allowing him to. He's extending the same courtesies that we extend to him: we relinquish rights to him to let him be a free agent, so he's going to take that opportunity. Once he tests it, he'll realize the only teams with cap space enough to sign him: Atlanta, NO, etc. are far from making the playoffs, or even contending on a regular basis. He should figure that he's not enough on his own and needs a star to make him better. The only way I see him leaving is through a sign-and-trade.

I am not sure why Z would look at another team WITH a max deal. Unless, Z wants to play off the bench for his final 2 years of his career.

Curry, Chandler and Dalembert being out there dont matter, they are RFAs so they are a moot.

Z is taking the advice of his agent obviously and he is just guarding his back. After Gund sold the team, Z really doesnt know whats going on.

I beleive Z will be back, and that's the best thing that can happen. Regardless of price.

The only way Z can leave the Cavs, go to a winner, and still get paid is through a sign and trade. Those kind of deals have to work for all sides too. The Cavs aren't going to make a sign and trade just to get anything if it doesn't make sense for them.
It was said how the only teams with cap space to give Z a big deal are bad rebuilding teams who wouldn't have interest in Z nor he in them.

I still think Z comes back but he's going to have to take a cut in salary. The Cavs are still the best situation for him and where he can get a good contract.

if Z only has about 2 years left in his career, why would we wanna sign him to a big contract, have him get hurt and then be stuck paying a inactive player? i mean seriously think about that.

He has been healthier then Curry/Dalembert/Chandler etc over their careers. His health is not a big issue. Ilgauskas has more then 2 years in him!

i was just responded to what Inf said

Max deals consist of 5 years total. I see Z playing at his highest potential for 3 more years. That leaves 2 years left, where I see his skills start to deteriorate. I am not talking about injury, I am talking about age.

We'll need to offer Z a 5 year contract to retain him I think. Whatever free agents are brought on board will probably also have largish long term contracts. Our young guys including Gooden, LeBron, and AV will need to be resigned, so really, I see the Cavs as being over the cap for a while. Having Z for 5 years won't significantly affect available cap space because we're going to be over at that point. If something happens to his foot like 4 years down the line, Gilbert can just Allan Houston rule him.

If a 5 year contract is what it takes to keep Z happy, I say do it

Oh and someone suggested a front loaded contract starting at 10 then declining, I don't think thats even allowed in the NBA, but I could be wrong and just never have heard of it

Pointing out a few things to GM Ferry

By Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND - No Cavaliers general manager has come to the job with as much in his favor as Danny Ferry. That's because no Cavaliers GM had a legitimate superstar such as LeBron James to serve as a magnet for free agents.

Nor has any Cavaliers GM had $28 million to spend under the salary cap on a team that has come within a game of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

So let's give Ferry a seven-point plan to success:

1. SIGN ZYDRUNAS ILGAUSKAS: Put down a four-year, $42 million offer. Give the 7-foot-3 center some love, because he has not felt much lately. That's especially true because there were rumors that owner Dan Gilbert was not a big fan of the All-Star center.

Lately, Gilbert has been more upbeat about Ilgauskas. He should make Ilgauskas feel wanted, even if they decide against signing him. The Cavaliers might want to use him as part of a sign-and-trade deal with a center-hungry team such as the Dallas Mavericks. So keep the lines of communication open.

2. ILGAUSKAS IS GOOD ENOUGH: It's easy to dwell on his weaknesses, just as was the case with another Cavaliers finesse center named Brad Daugherty. Then Daugherty was out with a back injury, and suddenly the 20 points and 10 rebounds that he averaged during his five All-Star seasons looked great in the rearview mirror.

Is Ilgauskas good enough to help a team advance in the playoffs? Can he complement James? Does he like Cleveland?

Yes -- and James likes playing with him.

3. WHO'S BETTER? That's the real question with Ilgauskas. Where will they find a replacement? Some fans have mentioned Samuel Dalembert, but he's a restricted free agent and the Philadelphia 76ers are likely to match any offer he receives.

Ilgauskas not only averaged more points (17 to eight) than Dalembert, he averaged more rebounds (8.6 to 7.5). Ilgauskas is slow defensively, and he can be foul prone.

Part of the problem was the horrible defense from the guards -- and, sometimes, James. Guys just drove to the basket untouched, and when he tried to defend the rim, Ilgauskas committed awkward fouls.

4. Z & THE SHOOTING GUARD: The Cavaliers need a shooting guard who can do just that -- shoot.

Word is Michael Redd will be glad to sign with the Cavaliers for something very close to the maximum contract. He's from Columbus and Ohio State. He has been lost in the basketball wilderness that is the Milwaukee Bucks. His ego is such that he'd be content to play next to James.

But if the Cavaliers want to maximize the value of an outside threat like Redd, then Ilgauskas can help. He scores enough inside, requiring defenses to double-team him near the basket, which should create open outside shots for Redd and others.

5. LOOK HARD AT LARRY HUGHES: There are four premier free-agent shooting guards. Ray Allen heads the list, but he's expected to stay with the Seattle SuperSonics. He also is the least likely of the four to mesh with James.

I love Joe Johnson, who averaged 19 points and shot better than 50 percent from the field and 3-point range in the playoffs. But he's a restricted free agent, meaning the Phoenix Suns can match any offer he receives. It's hard to imagine them letting him go.

I prefer Hughes to Redd, because Hughes is a much better ballhandler, rebounder and defender. He also scored 22 points a game for the Washington Wizards, along with 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He'd bring some grit to a very soft team.

Redd is a superior outside shooter, and certainly, there is no reason to mourn if the Cavaliers come out of free agency with Redd.

6. CHANGE AT POWER FORWARD: Little has been said about this, but the Cavaliers need to find a power forward whose primary focus is rebounding and blocking shots. Drew Gooden puts up solid rebounding numbers, but he sees himself as an offensive player, and he also really struggled with team defense. He's not a very physical player.

Why not see if Anderson Varejao can start and tell him just to rebound, block shots and hustle -- forget scoring. Then bring Gooden off the bench where his scoring can be more of an asset while some of the starters rest.

It also was a mistake not to pick up Tractor Traylor's $1.8 million option for next season. He's a backup, but a strong one who brings some physical presence.

7. HELP AT POINT GUARD: The great thing about $28 million in cap room is Ferry might be able to sign Ilgauskas and a star shooting guard, yet keep shopping for a solid point guard.

There's lots of talk about Bowling Green product Antonio Daniels, who had a solid year as a backup with Seattle -- 11.2 points, 4.1 assists, 44 percent shooting. He's also an above-average defender.

That's a key.

Jeff McInnis was an embarrassment on defense. Eric Snow is above average but struggled to score. A combination of Snow and another solid point guard should fix the problem -- especially since James can start the offense from his small-forward spot.

If the Cavaliers have a real shooting guard along with Ilgauskas and James, the point guard doesn't have to be a big scorer. But he better pass and defend.
Terry Pluto is God

So this is what Pluto wants...

C. Zydrunas Ilgauskas
PF. Anderson Varejao
SF. LeBron James
SG. Larry Hughes
PG. Antonio Daniels

That lineup right there is better suited on defense. AND we have 4 players on that lineup that can put the ball in the bucket.

I like the idea of Drew off the bench. I felt for the longest time that Drew isn't the ideal PF that the Cavaliers would want. He is definatly offensive minded and would be better off coming off the bench to help put up some points when James or Z sits.

Pluto is a great writer, the things he says about Z just makes me want him back more and more.
