Game #26 | Kings @ Cavs | Dec. 9, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
@Cavatt you were right about holding them below their season average.

Hope we can close this out but I’ve enjoyed heck out of this game (helps that I missed the 24-11 start to the 1Q)
Allen quietly couldn't defend this team. Mobley played heavy minutes and was killing them. Couldn't play all 48.

Their set defense was quite good.

Bummer Cavs couldn't close. They got some great shots and they have a great rookie who can't miss(against the Cavs)

The hero ball really isn’t the issue. All teams do it. Watched the Mavs game last night and Luka dribbles the air out of it most possessions. LeBron and Kryie did it here. Durant does it, Steph does it, etc.

The issue is ability. While extremely gifted, DG can’t be that guy. Whether it’s youth or just not having a plan, he obviously can’t be the guy on this team.

I’ve watched all but 2 or 3 games and I’m waiting for him to get an 8 second call. EVERY time he brings it up he crosses the time line at 17 clicking to 16. Tough to run an offense that way

It has very little to do with Mitchell. Losing Markkanen has hurt Garland a lot, especially when Mitchell is not on the floor. Add in the loss of Love and it's easy to see why Garland is struggling at the end of games. The Kings were keying on Garland and not even guarding anyone else outside the paint, when Markkanen was here even if he wasn't hitting, his very presence forced the opposition to put a big near the 3 point line which opened up the paint. Without that, every time Garland drove he'd have 2 guys on him and another guy waiting on him in the paint. No one guards Okoro at all, no one pays attention to Allen outside the paint, Stevens is little more than an after thought, Cedi is hit and miss on any given night, and teams are willing to take their chances that Mobley won't beat them. There are just not enough offensive weapons on this team unless Mitchell and Garland are together, and when you worsen it by taking out Love and Allen you basically have Garland and a bunch of guys who can't shoot. It's a recipe for disaster.
Which is why Garland should have recognized that and started playing “off the ball” to get his offense instead of dribbling and forcing plays/shots! BUT THAT IS ALSO ON JBB WHO WAS COMPLETELY OUTCOACHED LAST NIGHT!

After a disappointing loss and a depressing thread, here's a ray of sunshine: the Cavs landed one play on the NBA Top 10 highlights. I am not responsible for the selection or ordering of the plays. That is always criticized.

I can't help but feel if it had been Donovan playing and DG sitting out there's no way they would have gotten outscored 19-0 in crunch time last night. Mitchell is definitely their "closer."

Maybe the offense is way too Donovan-centric this season which tends to happen in the NBA when you have a superstar on the roster. We got to the 4th quarter last night and nobody could make a shot (for various reasons). Can't complain too much though as they are currently sitting at 16-10.

This team has one more bullet left in it's chamber when Rubio comes back in a few weeks. Hopefully having another 'coach on the floor' will solve some of these issues as JBB/Walton obviously didn't have any answers against the Kings. Cavs are sitting at a miserable 24th in "clutch" net rating after another choke last night. Hopefully Donovan will be back against the Thunder so the team can quickly get back to winning.

Which is why I have consistently said (contrary to some posters) that we need a “legit” wing player on this team that DOES NOT need the ball in his hands to score (unlike DG) like a Harrison Barnes and it’s up to Koby to get creative to acquire that type of player.

I have NBA ticket from Directv but for some inexplicable reason I was blacked out of last night's game because I'm in proximity to the Sacramento viewing area. Why the fuck did they black me out for a game played in Cleveland, I have no idea.

But I did listen and follow the thread. I have to ask myself, with Wade, Mitchell, and Love all out, who did we have available for outside shooting? That leaves Garland, who also has to facilitate. Then you have LeVert and Cedi. After that??? Nobody.

So besides Garland we needed to rely on Cedi and LeVert for perimeter shooting. To me that, in and of itself, is a losing proposition, especially against a team like Sacramento that does have decent outside shooters. All they needed to do was focus on shutting down Garland and that shut down our whole offense.

Those observations are based on me not seeing the game, so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong either by eye test or by the stats. But to me both Garland and JBB were up against it because of missing personnel issues, more than any other reason.

The Kings were 16-for-33 on 3's. Normally they make 32% on the road which would be 11-for-33. On an average night they would have scored 15 fewer points and we win 95-91.

But the bigger issue is the total collapse at the end which has happened before.
