* Kings are shutting down half their team today. Tyreke Evans (concussion) and Jon Brockman (knee) are out and, ironically two of my favorite rookies in the league. Evans is a poor man's LeBron and Brockman is a poor man's Andy Varejao. Also the Kings are going to hold Francisco Garcia (wrist), Spencer Hawes (back) and Sean May (knee) out. That means just nine bodies for Sac.
Varejao is out for the Cavs and day-to-day with the hamstring. Not serious but sore hamstrings turn into pulled hamstrings pretty easily. Might sit Wednesday vs. the Bucks, too. We'll see.
* It is hard to handicap the Kings with the injured mess they are. But in general they are a big team. Green is 6-11 and plays shooting, Omri Casspi is 6-9 and comes off the bench. Also, Thompson and Landry are active bigs. So not having Varejao will make some impact. They do score because they have a bunch of guys who can get hot from the outside. But they are often a poor defensive team.
* Without Varejao, look for Zydrunas Ilgauskas to get into the game soon, about six minutes or so in. Should be quite a scene.
Sacramento Bee:
Kings: Today's game
Published: Sunday, Mar. 28, 2010 - 12:00 am
Kings (24-49) at Cavaliers (57-16)
Kings update: The Kings have lost three in a row and five of their last six. Tyreke Evans has missed the last four games, leaving the Kings short on ballhandlers. To make things worse, their depth in the frontcourt has been tested lately. If Spencer Hawes continues to be bothered by a lower back strain, Sean May will see more action. With Jon Brockman also out, the Kings might have to play Joey Dorsey, too. Another option would be to give Donté Greene some minutes at power forward.
STATS LLC:
Although the Cleveland Cavaliers have beaten the Sacramento Kings seven straight times, the last five meetings have been very competitive.
That could change Sunday afternoon with Tyreke Evans unavailable for the lowly Kings when they visit the league-leading Cavaliers.
Cleveland (57-16) has won by an average of 5.8 points in its last five matchups with Sacramento (24-49), and that figure is skewed a bit by the Cavaliers' 117-104 overtime victory Dec. 23 in which the Kings were outscored 13-0 after regulation. LeBron James had 34 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in that game and scored 51 in the previous meeting, a 126-123 victory that also went overtime March 13, 2009.
The Kings, though, could struggle to compete without Evans, who leads all rookies with a team-high 20.3 scoring average. He will miss his fifth straight game with a concussion and Sacramento has struggled offensively in losing the last three, averaging 83.3 points on 39.7 percent shooting.
Sacramento could also be without second-leading rebounder Spencer Hawes, who left Friday's 94-86 loss at Boston with a lower back strain in the third quarter and did not return.
All of that should be bad news against a Cleveland team that has a magic number of four to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers also may be motivated after their eight-game win streak ended with a 102-97 loss at San Antonio on Friday.
Sacramento's Finest, thanks to Randolphkeys's preview
