Game Thread 2019-20 Season Game #53 | Cleveland Cavaliers vs Los Angeles Clippers | Feb 9th, 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ive been saying Sexton was a shooting guard all season. I don't understand, why this coaching staff trying to make him something he's not...

People criticize Sexton for having low assist numbers yet he's not a point guard.

I criticize Sexton for not PASSING. He doesn't have to have high assist numbers, just make the right pass, and keep the ball moving.

That's all I ask.

Also, he should stop trying to attack the basket with the whole defense at the hoop. He has improved. But I'd love to see how he is at the 2 full time. They need to run plays for him to get open looks, and get him the ball on the move.

I honestly blame JB for all the Cavs woes. 40 years experience and the Cavs look worse than last year. He does not put the players in position to win. I'm just not impressed with this guy.

And I've never been on the Sexton train. So?

Just saying that your assertion was incorrect. Not everyone suggesting that Garland should be traded was looking to trade Sexton last year.

Awful game but you could definitely tell that the rotations were all over the place.

One thing that I don't understand is why our guards are not handling the rock? Please stop that already and put the ball in the hands of Garland. We should rock Garland KPJ Cedi Love and Dre. Nice and easy. Big minutes to sexton as our spark of the bench and try to develop some good 2 men game with nance jr. Besides this 7 guys everyone could be gone. Btw we could surely use Windler perimeter threat

I don't understand, why people are so fixated wanting Sexton on the bench. He has more of a right to be the starter than Garland. I like Garland but on most nights he can't score to save his life. Garland was drafted because he had range yet haven't showed it much this season.

You can get away with one of the guards being a shit defender but you need good defense from the other guard, SF and PF. We get none of that.

I wonder where all the cuts and other stuff he was going to bring to the Cavs. I rarely seen it all season.

Sexton and KPJ are not good playmakers. You can't have a Kevin Love and a Drummond without feeding them the ball. Sexton with those two on the floor have some flaws for what i'm concerned. Sexton can't make use of the breakdown of the defenders... So when he manage to breakdown the defense he doesn't get the people involved. I would rather to involve the starting lineup and have sexton doing his thing out of the bench.

On the starting Lineup you got plenty of scoring options. Cedi with the motion, KPJ with the iso, Dre cleaning up the boards and Kevin being a 3 point threat as he is on the paint.

But I was never talking to you, you felt the need to assert yourself. If it didn't apply, let it fly, but don't act like most of the posters here weren't bashing Sexton after every single game until after the allstar game.

It pretty much showed tonight that Love doesn't really trust Garland to get the ball to him and Drummond. That was the main issue in the first half. They took the ball out of both Garland and Sexton's hands so they were pressing when they did get the ball. None of our bigs have that blend of scoring that can break down a defense and passing to have the offense run through them like they did in the first half of today's game.

Sexton has been scoring pretty consistently in first quarters recently when he plays basically the whole quarter. Tonight taking the ball out of his hands, taking him out early, then the foul trouble made for a horrible 1st half for him.

These last 30 games are just going to be a circus until they hopefully get some roster balance and improvement in the offseason

- draft a wing
- find a trade for Love
- Find a trade for TT or let him walk

In fairness, I had just responded to the following post with “Yes, Yes I would”:

“Would you trade Garland for the 10th pick in this draft?”

So it was reasonable for me to believe that you WERE talking to me.

No matter; I hate these kinds of arguments anyway, and I didn’t mean to get INTO one.

My opinion is that Sexton has shown more promise and improvement than Garland up to this point, but Sexton has had more time, and he has obvious flaws, like his willingness and/or ability to share the ball.

Worst home loss in franchise history. Even the expansion Cavs never got beat by 41.

Good thing Kawhi Leonard sat this one out.

Delly didn't get into the game even though the entire second half was garbage time and Knight is no longer on the team. Obviously Beilein is done with him. It looks like the decision has been made that he won't be back so there's no point playing him. Kind of a sad end to Delly's Cavaliers career.

Chris Fedor summed it up:

"There was no way to distract from that appalling performance. Not even the acquisition of Drummond can divert attention away from this horrendous season and the short-term struggles that lie ahead until April’s finale."

He also pointed out that the presence of Drummond in the paint doesn't help the glaring problem of perimeter defense. Our little guards can't defend guys who are 6'5" and up when they're shooting 3's even when they're right in the shooter's face. And every team has tall players who can hit from deep. The taller, more talented guards like Paul George have been killing us.

Speaking of little guards, the Raptors won an NBA Championship last year with Lowry and VanVleet starting, but they had Leonard, Siakam, and Gasol/Ibaka on the front line and a strong bench. Unless we can get players like Leonard and Siakam to go along with Drummond we have no chance to compete with the better teams.

Love and Cedi are a far cry from Leonard and Siakam.

The Cavs need to make a committment to Larry Nance Jr and KPJ. Play them as much as possible. They both are big enough and athletic enough to defend the perimeter. They run the floor, pass, and rebound. They can shoot 3's. This is what you need in today's NBA. Taller, athletic guys who can run the floor, handle the ball, hit from deep, defend the perimeter, and take it to the rack when isolated on small guards.

The Cavs have gone the opposite direction, back to the days of small point guards and big, low post centers. Toronto proved it can still work, but only with a couple of elite forwards who can do everything.
