Game Thread | 2020-21 Season | Game #47 | Cavs @ Jazz | March 29, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Eh. The Jazz are honestly probably 40 points more talented than the Cavs tonight.
The Jazz scrubs expanded the lead by 10 against the Cavs’ scrubs. Even their SCRUBS cared more.

I realize it was garbage time, but there was a typical Okoro moment in the last 30 seconds. We had the ball out front and the Jazz are not really guarding anyone. Okoro breaks down the lane and gets a perfect bounce pass when he's uncovered about 3 feet from the hoop. In typical Okoro hot potato fashion, as soon as the ball is in his hands he passes it out for a covered 3. He has an easy uncovered layup and plays like the basket isn't even there.

Wade plays 34 minutes and takes 5 shots.

Prince jacks up 9 in 18 minutes.

Cavs bench 7 of 28 shooting.
Someone needed to tell Wade that just because he was starting for Nance didn’t mean he had to take the same number of shots Nance normally takes.

Cavs have lost 18 of the last 23 games by 10 or more points.

Hartenstein had 14 rebounds and 7 assists.

Yeah. He is sort of raw and just grabs at the ball after the other team secures the rebound, but his passes were decent. 14 rebounds? Not bad.

His finishing sucks like he is trying to draw a foul like Drummond. Ugh. That part I didn't like. The rest was ok. Just like young player mistakes mostly. Not as mature a game as Allen, but he looks like a more aware passer.

JBB- We competed and the guys gave it what they had.

No Allen, no Nance
No Love, no chance.

If the Cavs were totally healthy my guess is the starting front line would be Allen, Love, and Nance - all missing tonight. Not that the Cavs had a ghost of a chance to beat Utah anyway, but with their entire starting front line out the game was over early in the second quarter at 40-20.

Hartenstein really hustled and showed he can pass and rebound. The seven assists were impressive. He goes for every offensive rebound and was very active on both ends. He kind of reminded me of a taller, left-handed Anderson Varajao.

The Jazz are a horrible matchup for the Cavs because so much of the Cavs' offense is dependent on penetration and attacking the rim, but with Gobert in the paint there was little chance. He either blocked the layup or forced a bad miss, which he usually rebounded. The Cavs were 6-for-19 in the paint in the first half. Against Utah you have to hit 3's and the Cavs can't shoot 3's to save their lives so they were screwed. The Cavs were 7-for-34 on 3's.

Gobert and Mitchell did pretty much whatever they wanted. Gobert was a +38 in 28 minutes. Ingles was a +32 in 18 minutes off the bench. The Cavs were lucky Jordan Clarkson had an off night, going 3-for-14, or they would have lost by 50. The Jazz have two guards coming off the bench, Ingles and Clarkson, that might be better than the Cavs starting guards.

Okoro was 1-for-9 and 0-for-6 on 3's. I'm trying to give the Cavs the benefit of the doubt but what did they see in an undersized small forward who can't shoot a jump shot? I get the sense they overreacted to last year's historically bad defense and just decided they were going perimeter defense with the fifth pick and anything the guy could contribute offensively was a bonus.

I don't know if the Cavs got anything out of this loss other than Hartenstein getting his feet wet with his new teammates. The Jazz have used three starting lineups this year. The Cavs used their 22nd tonight. This team is getting hammered by injuries.

Well, the Cavs are just not in the Jazz's league even if they were totally healthy. At least there are no more games out west this year except for three games in Texas.

Beginning of game story from Salt Lake Tribune:

Turns out, the Utah Jazz are so much better than the admittedly-depleted-but-still-generally-bad Cleveland Cavaliers that, even with Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Jordan Clarkson combining for just seven first-half points on 2-for-16 shooting, Utah was still be up by 19 at the break.

And so it was that the second half of Monday’s game could be devoted to trying to get those guys on track, and working on various habits. They certainly didn’t have anything to fear in terms of losing the game.

Ummm, I’m not sure he had more than 5 touches. The whole bunch played one on one except for Wade and Hartenstein. And of course Okoro, who doesn’t want a touch.

i know it’s not his style, but we were so depleted we needed him to force the action more. Not that it would have changed the outcome, but he was one of the best options we had on the floor and he needed to get up double digit attempts one way or another. If nothing else it would have taken attempts from Okoro, Stevens, Prince, Hartenstein, Dotson and Thomas who went a combined 10 for 44. I’ll bet on Wade making a higher % than that.
