Big improvement over the blowout loss to Toronto two weeks ago. The Cavs were in this until the last 45 seconds of the 3rd quarter when they gakked up seven quick points thanks to a Love's meltdown after a Raptor basket. The Cavs were only down by four with less than a minute to go in the 3rd despite not having Sexton, Nance, Hartenstein, Delly, Stevens, and Prince.
The Cavs were lucky that Gary Trent Jr was out with an injury so they didn't have to worry about him putting another 44 points on them. They were also lucky the Raptors had a bad shooting night on 3's which kept the score reasonably close.
Last game the Raptors had 87 points at halftime. Last night they had 81 after three quarters. Big improvement by the Cavs' defense but part of it was bad shooting by the Raptors. They started out 1-for-15 on 3's.
Dean Wade missed an opportunity last night as he got 32 minutes and scored only 9 points, going 1-for-5 on 3's. If he can't knock down uncontested 3's then he won't be in the rotation when this team gets good. His defense is solid and he had a couple of nice put-backs, but he has to hit those 3's.
The Cavs are playing five games in seven days and now the roster is badly depleted so guys like Thomas, Wade, Dotson, and Kabengele will get the chance to show they deserve to be in the plans for next season.
I really feel for Junior. Now he's got a fractured thumb. Three injuries this season plus a major illness. The guy has no luck whatsoever.
I was very impressed with Raptors' rookie guard Malachi Flynn, who was the 29th pick in this spring's draft. He had a line of 18/5/5 with 2 steals in 24 minutes. He was the most productive guard for either team last night. The Cavs held Lowry and VanVleet to 9 and 8 points, but Flynn came off the bench and made a huge difference. He was very good in the last game against the Cavs when he had 20 points and 11 assists.
The Cavs needed a better performance from Cedi, who scored only 6 points in 38 minutes after getting 19 last night. He was 2-for-9 from the field. He couldn't get open for a good shot and he couldn't knock down his 3's. He's so inconsistent from game to game.
