Game Thread | Game #1 | Cavs @ Nets | Oct. 25, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kinda wish they changed the name of the chain. The playoff embarrassment tainted the junkyard name. Would have also been ok with them not bringing it back and just doing a game ball for player of the game.
Plus, it uses the name of Sylvester Ritter (God rest his soul) in vain.

Mobley 10 points and 6 rebounds? This is his third year and He comes out with a game like this against competition like the Nets? He looks like the same player he was as a rookie . For all the hype he gets by opposing players And teammates , his numbers are as average as when he came in the league.

Shit it could have been me. But not for the reason you’d think. I was flying high in Diakite hype and though they wanted to time it so that after a certain date he’d be eligible to play all remaining Cavs game.

Fast forward to now, the Knicks chose Windler over him and he’s playing for an Israeli league team.

To be fair to Diakite, he played well early on and then got pulled out of the rotation. But we just needed warm bodies to take some of the stress off other players who continuously looked gassed at the end of games.

When 6 of your 9 top players are either out (Allen/Wade) or play lousy (Garland/Mobley/LeVert/Niang) and you still get a road win over an above average team (and one who has a bench player score 37 points) I'd say it was a pretty encouraging opener.

8 of their 9 top players played lousy. Even though their 10th top player cooked us.

Mobley played well. Just don’t look at 10 pts

What I liked:

1. First road win to open the season in 23 years and they did it without Allen and Wade.

2. Strus 27 and 12 with a +13. Talk about announcing your presence with authority.

3. Okoro 18/6/4 with 2 steals (but also two offensive fouls in the last two minutes).

4. Mitchell of course, taking over in the final minute with 5 points and a steal. I wish he would have avoiding fouling with a loose ball on the floor and one second on the shot clock, however.

5. Holding Cam Thomas to 3 points in the 4th quarter. Okoro blocked one of his shots and Mobley got right on him to force the bad miss on the final shot. They made some adjustments that worked.

6. Uptempo transition game with 43 shots from deep, making 39.3%.

7. Only 10 turnovers while forcing 17.

What I didn't like:

1. Getting beat 50-38 on the boards and giving up 13 offensive rebounds. But part of that was due to Allen and Wade being out.

2. Niang. I said he looks fat and slow in the preseason and tonight he had zero points in 20 minutes and was awful defensively. I repeat, before long Wade will be the backup 4 and Niang will be out of the rotation.

3. Damian Jones picking up three quick fouls and finishing with a -7 in 11 minutes. Once Allen is back Jones won't be seeing much action if any.

4. LeVert was 4-for-17 but that will improve. He still can't make open ten-footers, unfortunately, and if he can't by now he never will. He's at his best driving and passing.
You missed the fact Jones didn't get ANY rebounds. That ticked me off.

Speaking of Windler...DNP last night.

Knicks obviously oblivious to the gem they have buried on the end of the bench.

Sad.

I'm glad to see them celebrate the win. I just wish they would have melted that JYD chain down or something. Being tough and physical shouldn't require a nightly ceremonial reward.

Hopefully you arent a motivational speaker for a living. I think its dumb too, but its done to motivate the players, they are young and obviously love the award, so let them have fun with it.

Things that encouraged me. Mitchell is still Mitchell, Strus has more all around game than I thought, and Okoro has seem to take a leap forward on both sides of the ball, he was an absolute monster on defense. He also appears to be taller than i thought and looked like a legit 6'6 or so, he will struggle guarding the bigger 3's, but a healthy Wade can help there some.

Incomplete on Mobley. He got 2 of his buckets from starting at the 2 point line and creating for himself. He was the only rim protector, so rebounding was tough, but he just didnt have allot of touches, that should improve.

Not worried about Garland, he hasnnt regressed, just playing through a slight injury and wasnt as sharp.

I am a bit worried about LeVert, he continues to not be able to make anything mid range yet its his favorite shot.

I am very worried about Niang's fit. He is an undersized PF with one skill to shoot, if he cant shoot in our offense, he was useless, but obviously give it more than one game, but Niang has worried me from the begining.

When you say it like that, it is pretty awesome. This speaks volumes to the depth and talent of the team. Last year, we probably lose this game.

JBB overplaying his starters is a problem that shouldn't be carrying over from last year. It's his crutch.

No Cavalier averaged 36 per game last season. Kyrie was over 37 mpg and he is older and has an injury history. Harden was 4th in mpg and he’s no spring chicken either.

Mitchell and Garland were very close to LeBron FFS.

Just a silly take.
