Game Thread | Game #42 | Cavs @ Jazz | Jan. 10, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yep - everyone will blame Levert (with good reason) but it was 107-102 and we had the ball with 1:50 left when Mighty Mouse dribbled it off his own foot out of bounds. Right then is when the Clarkson bs happened
And it was the second time that he did that exact same thing virtually in the same spot (trying to dribble through the entire Jazz team)

Also we were missing Allen, who was horrendous up and down the court in the first quarter before sitting due to illness. That makes a huge difference.

Can’t fault garland he is the one in charge in the comeback and Mitchell closed it the jazz were shooting 3-24 before the barrage of calls. refs changed the momentum in a big way to a team that was getting beat fair and square. Look at the ft disparity is insane

The Cavs start the second half of the season with a massive choke job, blowing a 5-point lead with 1:52 to go and in possession of the ball.

This loss was a perfect storm of three causes. One, Allen had to leave after seven minutes and the Cavs were outrebounded 54-37. They allowed 15 offensive rebounds including one with 1:36 to go when Utah's missed shot went out of bounds and the refs ruled for Utah. Failing to get that rebound resulted in a second possession for Utah and Clarkson's 7 points in one trip down the floor, thanks to LeVert stupidly fouling him twice on 3's.

The second cause was the Cavs' inability to hit 3's. Take away Mitchell and the rest of the Cavs were 3-for-19. They couldn't even make one out of six, and a lot of those misses were totally uncontested. I mean the Jazz players just gave up and watched the shot go up. We missed a slew of those. Love has made ONE of his last 18 three-point attempts. One for his last 18!

I don't usually complain about the refs but they called 17 fouls on Utah to 24 on the Cavs. Markkanen got one call on Stevens where Lamar never touched him.

That choke at the end was massive. Utah went on a 13-0 run in exactly one minute. That has to be some sort of record. At 107-102 Garland tried to split two defenders and lost the ball out of bounds. After Utah missed a 3-pointer that the Cavs failed to rebound, Clarkson scored 7 straight points thanks to LeVert, the first coming at the 1:23 mark. After LeVert missed an uncontested 3-pointer Clarkson made a floater in the lane. Mitchell missed a 3 and then Beasley hit two free throws. After another Mitchell miss, Markkanen made two free throws at the 23-second mark to complete the 13-0 run in 60 seconds.

I wonder how many times in NBA history a team been outscored 13-0 in 60 seconds, and if it's ever occurred in the final 1.5 minutes when they started with a 5-point lead.

Probably for the best that the site was down with that screwjob at the end of this game. the foul disparity alone was BS, but the Cavs seemed poised to weather it. Gotta put up 10+ point leads within 2 minutes to escape it, it looks like. The Cavs held the Jazz to 5/25 from the field in the 4th. Overall, the Cavs had a better shooting percentage from the field, just with the misses. Just pooped it up in the 1st and 3rd quarters.

CavsKermit had the best take on that shitty rule enforcement that killed the Cavs late in fouls -- I can't remember where it was posted, but it was in the context of how the Raptors play defense among other things. Shooters who deliberately change their landing spot on field goal attempts should not be rewarded with fouls. The intent of the rule -- to prevent dirty Zaza-like plays is sound. The enforcement is dogshit. Deliberately leaning into contact or changing your landing spot + the obvious flopping should not be rewarded. It's bad enough that defenders have little recourse in handling step back 3s other than running in the offensive player's face before they can get the ball up. And by then, it's probably going to be a common foul.

I had this game as a L when JA went out. Donovan changed my mind. Losing JA and Okoro made things difficult from a substitution perspective. Sucks. Those refs can go straight to hell.

That being said, The Cavs need to assemble some better perimeter defenders -- Neto is one, Okoro is another. Lamar is one, but you know what you trade for playing him. Lamar did a good job of minimizing Lauri's impact, something that kept the Cavs in the game.

The most discouraging loss of the season for me. If we had held the ball for 24 seconds and chased them off the 3 point line, we would have had a better chance.

I got over the depression by the next day. I figured we'd learn.

By the way, I was shut out of RCF for the game and all yesterday. How were you guys getting on? I use my home wifi and my laptop.

Cavs traded Lauri Markkenen, Colin Sexton, Agbaji, 3 first rounders and 3 pick swaps so they could lose to a sub 500 Jazz team.

The Cavs were without Allen, Rubio, and Wade. Love is mired in the worst shooting slump of his career and Cedi was a no-show for the second consecutive game. We still win if not for getting screwed by the refs and LeVert stupidly fouling Clarkson twice in 12 seconds, both on 3-point shots.

I wasn't getting on RCF. It was down due to an upgrade of their support network or something like that.

@Wham with the Right Hand..........you are becoming famous throughout the nba world...page 2 post #18

Well...maybe one Jazz fan liked my preview but I wouldn't say I was "famous throughout the NBA world". But thanks for the link - I loved it!

There's no way I could make a living at this because not enough fans are interested in that much detail, IMO.

This is one of the aspects that I miss most as Lauri is no longer with the Cavs. Your contribution here is indeed pro-level and the analysis is spot on. So in short, its not only 1 Jazz(Lauri) fan.

I seriously fucking hate Caris Levert. I don't think I have disliked a single Cavs player this much.

Sorry for reason the quote button screwed up my reply. From: Ohioplayer:

LaVert is what he is! An inconsistent mid range shooter! He makes hustle plays, gets in the paint and creates havoc but at times can hurt you. Somebody said it best earlier…..he’s a JR Smith remake. Those two fouls are Clarkston were bad! But unfortunately when you don’t stay attached to the shooter you put yourself in a bad recovery position and you’re apt to make those kind of fouls. But that was a by product of poor PnR defense. You cannot let a shooter (especially one on a roll like Clarkston was) come free off a pick. When that pick is set the big man MUST show hard on top of the pick and force Clarkston back the way he came! Also in that final minute JBB did NOTHING to help LaVert with Clarkston (ie denying the ball or sending two players at him to force somebody else to beat us)

All that being said if we had made HALF of our three point shots the other night we would have won that game by 10+ points!
To end this rant I will say this: The Cavs have to get “tougher” guarding the paint! We cannot continue to have teams do layup drills on us. I’m not saying hurt somebody but hit ‘em……let ‘em know there are no easy buckets here! Stop all of this soft ticky tack reaching fouls and jumping in the air bumping chests with people! If you are going to foul somebody then DAMN IT MAKE THE FOUL COUNT! AND MAKE SURE THEY CANT GET THEIR ARM UP TO FINISH THE SHOT MOTION

very frankly i think there are a ton of fans interested in the detail. when my wife and I went to a Gs/Ms game last year i had her read your write up. She is only a very causal Ms fan but it was enough for her to know who she should be following on the field

Well, if you have a Patreon or some such, please let it be known. Feels like stealing reading your pre-game analysis posts for free; I log on here just to read them for every Cavs match, even though I don't necessarily even check the box-score for all Cavs matches. Your posts just gives an incredibly nice overview on *all* the teams in NBA (even when you write them from the perspective of a die-hard Cavs fan :) ).
