okay, its been widely publicized that wade, bosh, melo have all signed 5 year contract extensions, meaning they will be with their team through I believe its the '11-'12 season. If lebron were to wait till next year to sign a full length deal couldnt the cavs offer him 6 years on that contract, effectively keeping him 2 years longer than the contracts of wade, bosh, and melo? I know this is being greedy but woudlnt we rather that happen than him signing this year?

i dunno if thats true but every time i hear wait or lets wait and sign him.all that comes in mind is boozer.

Bob, if Lebron waits till next year to sign his contract his new contract would be 1 year longer then Wade's or Carmelo's. Remember, this is an extention which means that they are extending James' existing contract by 5 years. So 1 year on his current contract, 5 years on his new = 6 years total.

damn it, i keep forgetting that this is an extension of a contract already signed and not just a new contract in general. I was thinking it was too good to be true. However the point still stands the waiting till next year could produce an extra year in cleveland

It could produce an extra year but also hurt Lebron's future earnings. Signing this extention means he is one year closer to his big payday that is his 3rd contract. That contract will be starting at around 19 million (depending on the cap) for its first year.

Thats why EVERY rookie that has ever been offered a maximum contract extention has accepted. Who knows what the future holds? He could go down in a heap like Terrell Brandon next year and never get another max offer.

For the record, here is LBJ's contract offer from the Cavs, based on a 50 million cap number. (rounded to save time)

*50 million cap*

5.8 million 2006/2007
12.5 million 2007/2008
13.8 million 2008/2009
15.1 million 2009/2010
16.4 million 2010/2011
17.7 million 2011/2012
______________

81.3 million over 6 years

However as we both know lebron is different than every other rookie that has had this chance. Even if lebron tore every ligament in both of his knees (god forbid) this season without and extension there woudl still be a line of every team in teh world willing to offer a max contract deal to him next offseason.

and with that im going to start praying that doesnt happen. I could see it now, lebron decides he wants to drive a motorcycle.......
