Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

Looks like it's only a matter of time (possibly a few days) before Danny Ferry is the new GM of the Cavs. If this happens and Brown comes here as President, things should at least be interesting. Ferry seems like a pretty smart guy.

Let's hope he's not like Paxon. Paxon's main problem was getting players out of his own playing mold. I hope for our sake that Ferry ain't like that.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

I think its a good idea to hire a someone who played for the team, that way they gain respect from people and also, i think its good that Ferry and Mike Brown are close, that is always good when the GM and coach have a good relationship, that way things work out easier.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

So if this all works out, the Cavs hires will all be solid people from some of the best teams as of late, Mike Brown who served under Pop and Carlise in Indy, probably the best coaching job this season considering half the team was suspended for most of the season. Ferry comes from the Spurs that have done an excellent job building up a very balanced team. The Pistons are just as balanced as the Spurs, and Brown was no doubt a huge part of that. All 3 are also defensive-minded teams.

Basically, this could work out really well. The wild card being that all 3 people will be new to what they're doing, add to that a new owner and whats looking like a young team, and this could be an organization headed in the right direction, built to contend a few years down the line.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

At least this means if Larry Brown does come over (let's hope he doesn't), he won't be a double-headed president and GM, having absolute rule over the front office. It also helps that if Brown does come that Ferry won't be a lame duck GM who has to buckle to all of Brown's "trade all the young kids away for veteran stiff" rants. Hopefully Cleveland fans can forget about Ferry the player and realize that Ferry the GM is a decent guy.

Ferry the player was not all that bad rgardless of what many "fans" think. It is not HIS fault that the CAVS made him a ridiculous contract. How many here would take a cut in pay after being given a contract? ZERO. Ferry played hard, was a good shooter and never loafed. Hopefully he can get the rest of our CAVS to be like him. The BLAIM of the Ferry deal falls on management.

On another note, I think this is a good hire....hopefully we WON"T get Brown.

I like acquiring Ferry. He's respected all round the NBA and this is his first crack at a huge job. It seems that Gilbert is following his instincts in getting up-and-coming people from winning organizations to add to his squad. I guess I understand why he wants Larry Brown at the helm; I just hope that Ferry and Mike Brown do most of the work with Larry just overseeing a little bit. I hope that Larry has enough trust in Danny and Mike so that the chemistry between these three will create a good stability for the Cavs. We desperately need it ASAP as the offseason is about to begin.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

like i said in another thread about this i think Ferry would be a very good hire for the team. you just know there are going to be idiots out there who bad mouth Ferry before he even steps foot into his new office because they didn't like him as a player, but i hope that is kept to a minimum.

You missed the subtle joke there, my friend. Of course it isn't Ferry's fault. The fault does lie with management. With memories of Harper-for-Ferry in the background, maybe this time around Ferry can make a major trade in Cleveland's favor this time. I don't fault Ferry for anything. He is a solid choice. Just a tad ironic though.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

I'm not overly excited about the Ferry signing, but I do like the fact like Mike Brown, he comes from a very proffesional and successful organisation. Hopefully with his experiences there he becomes a strong decision maker, particulary if Larry Brown comes in as President.

We did have to make a decision very soon. The draft and free agency signing period are fast approaching. We need to have our systems in place for who and how we are to sign and get some fall back plans in readiness.

Kiki???

As long as Brown isnt in control of players, Im excited.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

I like the Ferry hire and hope it does come true. He's always been near the top of my list of GM candidates and I think has all the makings of a very good front office executive. Some reasons were already given in previous posts. Ferry has been around the league his whole life, has been given a wide variety of responsibilities in the best run organization in the NBA in the Spurs and is highly respected around the league and thought of as a great GM candidate by NBA insiders.
I would have hired a younger front office executive on the rise like Ferry but hired a more proven experienced head coach. M. Brown is also highly thought of though so this would give the Cavs 2 quality younger candidates who who be committed to the long term future of the Cavs.

I don't think this rules out Larry Brown but he might not get as much power and control as was previously thought. I don't think Ferry would come here if he wasn't given major say in decision making. This is fine with me since L. Brown having total control always scared me.
I do think this rules out Kiki Vandeweghe. He'd want major power if he came to the Cavs and Ferry wouldn't agree to come without getting major say.

I agree. Danny Ferry was not that bad of a player, he just wasn't the player that Ron Harper was. He had a very nice mid range game and he could stroke that three on occasion.

Ferry as our GM would be interesting. I see him coming here just because he has a little bit of Cavs history in him.

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

Morway was available for the taking, but we didn't take him. Kiki I was never sure of, was he available or even interested? He has a nice gig in Denver already. Seattle wasn't going to let Sund go, and it seems the guy from the Wiz didn't cut it. All things considered, I'm liking the hiring, considering the other options

Re: Ferry Close to Finalizing GM Deal

Apparently Brian Windhorst will have a story in tomorrow's Beacon Journal that says the story of Ferry's hiring is premature. It might not be as close to being a done deal as the PD reported today. Ferry is supposedly happy in San Antonio and might not have the most power with decision making in the new Cavs front office.

The Ferry as GM hire could still happen and the Cavs did meet with him twice last week so there is interest and they are talking. But, it still seems the Larry Brown situation is continuing to keep things up in the air.
