Google is in serious talks to acquire YouTube, the wildly successful online video-sharing Web site, for $1.6 billion in cash and stock, people involved in the negotiations said today.

A deal would end an almost yearlong chess game among the nation’s media and technology moguls to take over YouTube, which allows users to share home movies, amateur spoofs and snippets of the best parts of television shows. Though it is not yet profitable, the site has exploded into a cultural phenomenon less than a year after its debut, broadcasting more than 100 million video clips a day.

Microsoft, Yahoo, Viacom and the News Corporation, among others, have all paid visits to YouTube’s headquarters in San Mateo, Calif., in recent months to inquire about buying the company.

Terms of the potential sale to Google could not be learned. It was still possible that the talks could collapse or that another suitor could swoop in with a rival offer.

The negotiations come as all of the established media conglomerates are in a frenzied hunt to acquire hot Internet properties. Yahoo, for instance, is in negotiations to buy Facebook, a social networking site originally aimed at college students, for more than $1 billion, according to people involved in those talks.

The buyout rush is partly a reaction to Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of MySpace, an online hangout with millions of personal Web pages. MySpace, which Mr. Murdoch bought last year for $580 million, is now worth as much as $2 billion by some analysts’ estimates.

another CDT conspracy theory, j/p man.

but yea google is becoming the Starbucks of the internet, buying out anything that has the potential to take them over. i hate that way of doing business, and monopolys are lame.

Google may be making a poor decision here. Now that someone with money owns it there will be a million people suing Google.

Damn thats a lot of money. I remember when I first heard about it few people around my area knew what it was now everone knows about it.

I wonder how youtube got so popular? I mean there are other sites identical to it... grouper.com

And James I saw this movie, it said by like 2012 that Google would basically run everything...they'd buy out myspace, they'd by youtube (came true) and they'd buy out a ton of other different things...just weird.

What's the movie CDT? I'm curious. Maybe I'll just google "google movie" and find out.

Youtube pays ZERO attention to copyright laws, that's why they are so popular. YouTube is to video what Napster was to audio. Look at how much of their traffice is re-running entire TV show, sporting events, music videos, etc....that's completely illegal.
Once Google buys them they will either need to adhere to copyright laws and lose over half(?) their business, or be subject to a million lawsuits.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out...Youtube will come with TONS of baggage.

It's unbelievable to me that youtube is worth 1.6 B's. As mentioned earlier, there are other sites that do the same thing. Hell, google ALREADY HAS google video, which is exactly the same! This is all about buying their users. Over 100 million videos are watched on youtube daily. My hats off to youtube and their marketing department. In less than 18 months they went from literally nothing (the site didn't exist) to getting enough users to be worth 1.6 Bill. Crazy.

Wow that is just crazy hearing about Google in talks for buying out YouTube.

Who would of known that it was worth $1.6 Bil already? I mean Google already has Google Video but like others have said there greedy on the customers, heck i don't blame them. It's all about the money :D

Google will have to change things at YouTube or they will get sued for millions.

Man I need to come up with something so google.com can buy it for an insane amount of money.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. I wonder how much money the owners of YouTube were worth two years ago? It'd be interesting to know.

the guys who made youtube used to work for paypal or something i remember reading that somewhere, and they only have a staff of about 50 people at youtube.

How do they keep up with all the movies and hosting all that stuff? Hosting for them must cost millions.
