Grantham likes defense's progress

The rebuilt Browns defense could have as many as six new starters.

All the new faces are expected to make an impact and help the Browns defenses improve on some of last year’s problem areas. For a team that finished last in the league in sacks, change is good.

But defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is excited about what hasn’t changed as well.

His 3-4 system, a foreign concept to most players a year ago, will now come more naturally to them. They’ve had time to learn and adjust, the team’s personnel department has had time to add players with 3-4 experience, and all that should lead to better results and more flexibility for Grantham in making his calls.

Two big – make that very big – and experienced additions who know the 3-4 well should help, too, as the Browns added mammoth nose tackle Ted Washington and outside linebacker Willie McGinest in free agency.

The Browns started the draft by selecting two linebackers, Kamerion Wimbley and D’Qwell Jackson, and both will play as rookies. Wimbley will learn from and at times rush the passer opposite McGinest, while Jackson is trying to fit in the 3-4 as an inside linebacker opposite Andra Davis.

Jackson’s top competition there is Chaun Thompson, who played outside last year. Thompson is probably the best example of the balance of old and new that Grantham has to work with in this training camp.

The good and the bad of last year are over, and all signs to point to bigger and better things in 2006. There’s better talent and better competition for jobs, and the ultimate expectation is better results.

They will definately have a better grasp of the defense in year two. It was a totally new scheme they were running and not only did the players not understand the scheme but we didn't have quality players in the scheme.

Jason Fisk :uhh:
Ben Taylor :uhh:
Orlando Ruff :uhh:

Definately some quality improvements over those guys with the rookies alone, hopefully guys like Andra Davis can help D'Qwell as they play the same position and I beleive McGinest is having a positive effect on Wimbley.

Not to be overlooked but the cornerback battle between Cutch and Bodden looks pretty good. If I had my vote I'd say Bodden, more physical which is important against teams in our division.

Hines Ward is the most physical WR in the game. Chad Johnson is pretty big himself and gave Bodden a "X" mark for containing him to a tune of 22 yards. Heath Miller was a great rookie TE last year and don't forget Todd Heap.

i like this d-coordinator...he may not be the best, but he shows fire and passion during the games

Just to throw a stat out there.. Leigh Bodden was ranked 4th in the league last year by only allowing 5.5 yards per pass attempt (when thrown his way).. While Daylon McCutheon was ranked 9th by only allowing 5.8 yards per pass attempt..

Those are some pretty good stats considering that both of them are not your number 1 corner.. Let's just hope Gary Baxter can put up some good numbers as well.. But, what's exciting, is that our Top 10 pass defense now has a pass rush that they can rely on and get some help from..

Things look at lot brighter on defense, all the way around...

So did Butch.

I know what you're saying though.

I can't believe we improved the D so much! I can see our D being top 10.

I mean can u remember who was our starting outside linebacker besides Chaun? Ya, a nobody.

Now we have Wimbely and Willie! Davis and Chaun/DQ inside. Lots of depth. Washington in the middle and u got something special going

I can't wait till mid season cause thats when things will be rolling with 100% confort!
