Is it wrong to eat an animal?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Factory farming is bad juju. Cramped animals that never see the sun, medicated and supplemented to grow fast. I live in the country and buy as much meat as I can locally raised by local farmers. I'm an omnivore, balance for everything. Factory farms ruin the balance. Support Farm Aid.

Whenever I stop by farms, I let animals take a bite out if me in order to keep things fair.

Sometimes they take me up on the offer, sometimes they don’t.

Whenever it’s done, I tell them what’s going to happen to them and drive away.

Don't kid yourself. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about!

Damn autocorrect!

I'm glad we are talking about the natural order of things and food. I just finished reading a book on Native American life in the Bay Area before Western society.

Ever wonder why there are areas of the country where ticks are taking over? It's because the deer population goes unchecked in many wooded areas. I've always supported the large faction of my dad's side of the family who go out deer hunting every season to thin the heard and fill the freezer with venison.

Also: ever wonder why there are so many squirrels running round?

We have abandoned eating many food sources in favor of the easy and faceless cuts of meat sitting in grocery store coolers.

So you want to save the planet? Punch a Canadian goose in the face, cook him and eat him. Those birds are total assholes anyways. Restore the natural order.

Don't mistake the country pig farm for a bunch of wild boars hanging out.

Are there any resources to identify sustainable / humanely raised meat? I've always said I would be willing to eat less meat but focus on higher quality stuff.

At one point I started to eat more meat substitutes, I am generally not a fan, but I do like Gardein "ground beef". Super convenient and in certain dishes you can't tell the difference between it and beef...especially if you add beef bullion. Things like chili and stroganoff work well.

for chicken and eggs, look for free range. Animals are treated better, quality is noticeably better.

The only thing that would have made this better is if you had said what you said and then raised the bacon cheeseburger you had stashed behind your back and then taken a bite of it as you slowly backed away from the fence.

This is very much a regional question. I like going to farmer's markets and select butchers who advertise sustainably/humanely raised meat.

Of course, when you buy humanely raised meat, it's very expensive. That pork chop had a name, and you will pay more for a pork shop that once had a name.

One other "better for the environment" move is to prioritize buying the meat close to expiration. You will both save money and eat meat that will otherwise be thrown away. That's the most disappointing aspect of agri-business: wastefulness of stores who did not anticipate the correct demand. A "Sunday sauce" is the traditional Italian answer to mystery meat.

"Free range" and "cage free" are often scams. Free range just means there's a tiny spot that they can use to go outside (but they often can't even access it because they are crammed inside) and cage free often means they are just crammed in a big barn.
