I'm thinking here and seeing how many players the Cavaliers are interested in, including Sarunas and possibly a few other free agent PGs that they have reportedly shown interest in, could the Cavs use the "Allen Houston Rule" on Eric Snow's contract? Not that Snow has no use on the team, but under the rule you can cut one contract from your salary cap while still paying the player. Going in with Sarunas, Hughes, LeBron and whatever other possible PGs are out there, it could make Snow expendable while clearing up almost $5.5 million off the cap. If by any chance the Haslem rumors have any validity, this would seem to be a method of clearing some cap room. Any thoughts?

Interesting point. I'd think Snow would be less vulnerable than Newble. Snow may not be a starter, but the team is going to need his 20 or so minutes of hard-nosed defense, particularly if they sign SJ, who everybody says can't defend worth a lick. Newble on the other hand will have to fight for time at the 2 and 3 spots with Jackson and Pavlovic.

I think the money stays on the cap.

This strategy is for teams over the cap trying to clear space for future years to be under the cap.

I think this is how I read it...

No, not at all vulnerable to this rule.

It only applies to teams that are over the cap that are paying luxury tax. That's why the big names out there are Allan Houston, Michael Finley, Brian Grant: guys making 10+ mil but not living up to that money, and not worth a roster spot.

What happens is the player is waived off the roster. His salary still counts towards the cap. The salary will still have to be paid in full. The benefit for the team is that they don't have to pay the luxury tax. If it's 1 on 1, then the price would be ~10 mil to keep him on the team for no good reason.

Snow's contract is big, not huge. It's around 6 mil a year for the next 4 years. So it's about a starter's pay for a guy that will average around 25 minutes a game. Not too bad if we get Jasikevicius for cheap.

The contract goes against the cap, but it saves the owner money with the luxury cap. This rule does not effect us as we are under that threshold. Snow will remain a Cavalier. His leadership is invaluable.

All signs point to Brown and Ferry liking Snow. I don't think he's going anywhere. They like his defense, veteran leadership, and work ethic. Sarunas and Snow would be a solid PG combination and both bring different abilities to the table.
The Cavs are thin at PG now. They can't dump the only one they currently have.

You gotta keep Snow out there. At the very least he knows what hes doing and he understands his role. He's got four guys out there who can score so he wont have to shoot much. He plays good d... Saras, even if we get him, has proven nothing in the NBA so hes gonna have to prove hes a better fit to get PT at all. And its unlikely we pick anyone up that blows Snow out of the water offensively AND plays solid D.

Snow is our starting PG.

Snow will be a keeper for this season, next year however him and Newble will be losing sleep...
