Welsch traded?

I just caught a post on another board that said a Cleveland radio station (WKNR) is reporting that there's a deal to trade Jiri Welsch to the Bucks for a 2006 2nd round pick.
Don't know how much truth there is to it but a few people have heard it.

This deal wouldn't excite me much. It's not even for a pick in this year's draft. If it happens it seems it would be tough for the Cavs to trade into this year's draft.
If this happens it also makes the trade with Boston for Welsch look even worse. We gave up a future #1 and took the lottery protection off of this year's pick for a what now is a 2006 2nd round pick? It also sucks that some mock drafts have Felton possibly falling to 13 where the Cavs would have been picking.

Cavaliers trade Welsch for 2006 second-round pick

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sports writer

The Cavaliers picked up $2.1 million in salary-cap space Tuesday by trading swingman Jiri Welsch to the Milwaukee Bucks for a second-round pick in 2006.

The Cavaliers acquired Welsch from the Boston Celtics in late February for a 2007 first-round pick. Welsch struggled after joining the Cavaliers and didn't fit into the future plans. The Cavaliers will have slightly more than $28 million with the move.

Re: Welsch traded?

Looks like we both posted a Jiri thread at the same time. Windhorst just reported it at the ABJ website.

Well there you go. We ended up trading a first rounder for the 36th pick.

Edit : Future pick (2006)

No excitement for this draft!

Our current roster is this :

Centers : .................................
Power Forwards : Gooden, Varejao
Small Forwards : James, Newble
Shooting Guards : Jackson, Pavlovic
Point Guards : Snow

Thats a total of 7 players. We need a minimal of 7 more players to meet the NBA's requirements. 28 million to spend. 3 more big needed, at least one more point guard!

Ferry starts off with a bad foot out front, much like Gilbert has.

Terrible deal.

i was hoping we would grab a pick tonight...if we got a lottery pick would u guys be willing to accept moving gooden for a lottery pick?i think i would.

That Jiri trade right before the trade deadline is going to come back and really hurt the Cavs.

Why is this terrible? This deal clears 2.1 million dollars in cap space. Assuming the cap is 50 m, we would now have a little over 28 million dollars to spend.

I think the groundwork for this trade had already been laid before Ferry got here. I think I would have waited until during the draft to pull off any trade involving Jiri. Who knows if something better or something involving a pick in this draft could have come about.
It's obvious the new Cavs regime didn't think Jiri had any future here or fit with what they want to do.
The Jiri trade with Boston was terrible and could have really hurt this team considering what they had to give up. Paxson gets blame but I have a feeling both Gilbert and Silas were pressuring him to make some deal to address the Cavs shooting and scoring problems from the perimeter. They would have been better off just standing pat.

Whats that $2 million going to do?

We now have to fill another roster spot, so that $2 mill is irrelevent.

It did nothing for us, just another roster spot to fill.

I think this is a beautiful trade. Don't underestimate the 2.1 million. It goes a long way in negotiating the contracts that will get us the players we want. The extra 2 million can be used to pay Z more. Pay Ray more. Redd. Etc.

Yea, we have to fill a roster space up. But seriously, I'd rather fill it up with a vet for the minimum if we have to. Jiri probably wouldn't play much anyway because we have Sasha.

We need to get a PG? Seems like Antonio Daniels is going to be a lock to come here. That'll be around the MLE, after big FA's are signed.

I think this spells out the future: Z is going to get a bit overpaid, probably a deal starting at 11-12 mil, 4 years. We'll probably throw the max at all the SG FA's and see who bites (12-14), then we'll pick up some backup players using what's left.

I don't think this is a bad move. It erases (or at least makes lemonade out of) a terrible deal by Paxson. Opens up more cap room. My only regret is that we didn't get a pick for this year. But it's not over.

Gooden has too much upside to trade for even a first rounder, especially in this draft. The only players I'd be willing to deal to get in would be Newble or Pavlovic. The former wouldn't get us much if anything, but Pav might get us into the low first round. We could try and pick up a young backup PG who could learn under Snow and then concentrate on Z or other centers and a starting SG stud.

Besides, look at that roster Karma posted above. Everyone except Snow and Newble is, what, 24 years old, max? We need some experienced FAs. Let's just hope Ferry can get them.

That 2.1 million could be huge. Alllow us to actually add maybe a 3rd fa like a PG.

Good deal by Ferry: Jiri & Luke are better prospects then Welsh so he wasn't going to get any pt anyways
