Day 1
Gilchrist came out looking very confident in what he brings to the table, but might not have brought the right mindset to this camp. He is dominating the ball, complaining to the non-existent officials about calls, and even argued with a teammate (Ellis Myles) during a drill. His furious clapping could be heard around the gym as he demanded the ball every time it was out of his hands for more than three seconds. In one sequence, he had the ball on a three-on-zero fastbreak, with two teammates ahead of him. He elected to keep the ball, and missed on a dunk attempt. Gilchrist remains a talented player with a great combination of athleticism and strength, and used that to score in bundles – though on average shooting percentages. His physical style of defense was a factor, but you have to wonder where his head is at sometimes. He has his work cut out for him at this camp to prove that the term PG applies to his style of play and not just his size.

Day 2
John Gilchrist: 16 points, 6/11 shooting, 2 assists, 2 turnovers – Perhaps the feature individual matchup of the day took place between John Gilchrist and Carl Krauser in the second game. Neither point guard was willing to back down one bit, as the defense was physical and the smack talk was flowing. While Krauser looked good in the drills, Gilchrist came away the clear winner when it came time for the games. He displayed physical superiority, an ability to get to the basket in numerous ways, and a nice perimeter jumper. While Gilchrist is clearly out for himself in this camp and isn’t exactly disproving the character questions that have been brought up over the past year, he may have put in the most impressive individual performance thus far in the camp.

Day 3
John Gilchrist: 9 points, 4/9 shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 assists – Gilchrist didn't have the type of headlining performance he had Wednesday, but he continued to show that he is amongst the most impressive prospects at the camp. His overall athleticism and strength are outstanding, and this combination allowed him to impress on both ends of the floor. His off-the-dribble ability might just be the best in Chicago. Unfortunately, Gilchrist again looked to be playing for himself most of the game and did not do a great job of getting his teammates involved.

Day 4
John Gilchrist: 4 points, 2/6 shooting, 3 rebounds, 6 assists – It wasn't a big offensive performance for Gilchrist, but he still managed to make a big impact on the game. He was dynamite in the open floor, and created offense for his teammates on numerous occasions. Nonetheless, he could once again be seen arguing with teammate Ellis Myles after he took a quick three-pointer. The buzz in the gym was still about Gilchrist's selfishness, and not his play on the floor.

The final recap
John Gilchrist: One of the biggest surprises in camp, Gilchrist outperformed each point guard he was matched up against and showed solid court instincts. He clearly improved his standing.

Well, seems pretty obvious why he wasn't drafted. He doesn't like Ellis Myles. :chuckles: He didn't like the punk. If he wasn't there gilchrist was of been a choir boy.

Sounde like he played well. But his selfishness at the camp sounds a bit disturbing. Maybe being undrafted was just what he needed. I hope he got a reality check and decided to improve his attitude and get rid of that big ego.

Personally, the selfish thing doesn't raise a whole lot of concerns with me because he was at a pre-draft camp where its dog eat dog. The whole purpose of that camp is to make yourself look as good as possible in order to get drafted as high as you can.

He obviously has some issues with his character that need to be addressed, but his talent level is clearly there.

I'm almost positive he will end up making the team.

Sometimes you need a player with some attitude. Someone who can get into the oppositions face and take them off their game. I see Gilchrist as one of these type of players. Gary Paytonish. I wouldn't mind the trash talking and the constant yelling at his teammates. It shows leadership.

It would help to see more assists coming out of him though...

Selfish play is part and parce of these camps, so that is not a big concern. Blowing up at team mates for playing likewise is a concern. Performance wise he had a great camp, but his attitude cost him but to the Cavalier's advantage.

He could also turn out to be the next Stephon Marbury

Hopefully, thats not the case. After reading the report, I actually do see the comparison.

Well on the Cavs he will learn quickly he ain't the big dog anymore and he's only supposed to get some of the leftovers.

If he ever passes up Lebron on a break, Brown will put his ass back on the bench for another year. So the Cavs could be the perfect team for Gilchrist: he can get quality minutes with out lack of PG depth and he knows his place - lap dog to Lebron

I can imagine all of his friends, possibly his agent, talking to him before the camp started:

"This is all about you"
"This is your future"
"Only look out for you"
"This is the MOST important day of your life"
"Play like you've never played before"
"Have the ball in your hands the most"

blah blah blah

Hell, it's what I would do...

The attitude could be a by-product of him trying to be a leader, or overly displaying his aggressiveness on the court. Whatever it is, LeBron and Snow will knock him on his ass if he brings it to the Gund.

That's exactly the name that popped into my mind reading the report. ugh. Hopefully that's not how he'll play if he's on the cavs.

while it would be nice to have PG on the roster who can put the ball in the hole he is reaaly going to hurt his chances in summer league if he doesn't run the offense and distribute the ball.

We should remember that this hoopshype report is just one person's point of view on Gilchrist at the pre-draft camp. I read elsewhere that he did try to shed his past image there and wasn't as bad as what was said in this story.

There's no doubt Gilchrist need to grow up a little but I think he's taken steps to do that. Going undrafted should also lead him to make the right changes.
He has the talent so this is a great low risk move by the Cavs. Having LeBron does allow you to get away with a more offensive minded PG although Gilchrist can't get away from his PG duties.

I wish I watched the ACC more but people on some other boards keep mentioning how awesome Gilchrist was in the ACC tournament 2 years ago - dominaniting type performance.

Could this be another Gilbert Arenas situation? would be awesome

Strong moves by Ferry so far - very impressed

I dont think he has the offensive capability of creating and taking over that Gilbert does.

I do however believe he can be a solid PG, a 10 PPG 6 APG kinda guy that has the ability to score a little.
