fvck Barry Bonds. Have your record bitch, you wont ever see the Hall of Fame.

at least we can be done with ESPN covering this asshole.

*Asterisk ? Sure, he'll have it next to his name..

But then again, why should Babe Ruth not have an asterisk next to his numbers ?? It's not like he played against black players..

Babe Ruth didn't intentionally avoid playing black players. He was playing by the rules of the day. Bonds cheated.

It's a shame. Even though Bonds is a world class a$$hole, he was one of the greatest all around players ever...and that was before the "clear". I didn't like him as a person, but I was in awe of his abilities. He was the ultimate 5 tool player. He definitely would have gone down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest players ever. But, he just couldn't have anyone else steal his spotlight...especially if they cheated to do it (see, Sosa, Sammy and McGwire, Mark). Too bad Junior Griffey got hurt, or we would be talking about him breaking the record instead of Bonds.

Really, now I just will have to wait a few years, and watch A-Rod drop this from the record books. I don't like Rodriguez either, but I respect his abilities and how he plays the game.

Babe Ruth also hit more home runs in a season using a ball that most teams couldn't match his numbers. I believe he played at least 3 seasons where he, by himself, hit more home runs than entire teams...using a ball that previous home run highs for a single player were 12. Home Run Baker hit 12 home runs the year he led the league...read that again...12.

I get that, Ben, and I completely agree with it... But, if your not playing against all of the superior competition, I believe there should be some mentioning of it in some form...

Kinda along the same lines of playoff records with the addition of the division series in 1995... Where there's a mention that Jeter is the playoff hits king, but it's noted that he's had more PA's due to the added round...

Bonds was a great player before steroids (and yes, i think he has used them.) Its just a sad to see the records of incredible American Heroes be wiped away by asshole players who couldnt do it the right way. Aaron was a World class human being who transended Baseball, Roger Marris, one of the most overlooked players who never got any love because he wasnt the Mick. These people are great athletes. Barry Bonds is not, and if anyone gets any satisfaction out of him probably never getting into the Hall (i know i do) thats enough for me.

Agreed.. When I was living in SD and LA, I could not wait to go watch him play...

Him and Griffey had the sweetest swings IMO, and were the most fun to watch, so every time those two made their trips to California, I would catch a game or two of a series if I was able too... Barry was incredible when he was with Pitt..

If healthy, A-Rod will smash this record... He's got over 100 more HR's than Bonds at the same age...

I think A-Rod tops out a little over 800

Bonds cheated...he knows it, Selig knows it, everyone and their mother knows it, they just need to find enough evidence so that he can't weasel out of it.

It's disgusting...

There are hall of fame caliber pitchers in Cuba that are not allowed to play MLB ball, should every record from here on out have asterisks until Castro dies and Cubans are allowed to play freely in the US?

If you're going on straight technicality, I guess the answer would be yes, and I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it.. But, hopefully common sense would probably prevail in this case, as the talent pool from all nationalities has increased throughout the years to get a good enough sample size as who's good and could challenge, and who's average and couldn't cut it..

You could go on about talents that died before they got a shot, and down the line for a variety of reasons as to why the records could be compromised *if* this or that happened..And IMO, they could all very well be valid points..

It's unfortunate that those guys didn't ever get to participate, but the point remains the same.. If you're putting up numbers against a certain group of players, when there's other players out there that can challenge you on a higher level, but we're unable due to the rules, it should be mentioned.. Baseball is not keeping those Cubans out of the major leagues..

It's not Ruth's fault, nor, if I recall correctly, did he endorse the rule, as opposed to someone like Cobb before him..

Baseball is a game of cheating.

Congrats to Bonds.

When ARod breaks it in eight years, everyone will want an asterik with him because he hits them when they are up 8-1 in the seventh inning.

I know it's different but....

I am glad it's over though.

Barry Bonds :fu: If he and McGwire werent on roids than I dunno.... Pete Pose is out of the HOF for gambling, and Bonds gets honored for this? I just heard his interview on ESPN, (Bonds tone of voice vaguely reminds me of Mike Tyson)and as the Chuckster would say, Hank Aaron gotta be rollin over in his grave...

Hank Aaron died?

This is how classy Hammerin' Hank is...He showed a mild protest to it by not being there when he broke the record, but still gave a statement congratulating Bonds for his hard work and dedication and turned it into a positive about pursuing your dreams.

Here is how it played out:

As for Aaron, he said all along he had no interest in being there whenever and wherever his 33-year-old mark was broken. He was true to his word, but he did offer a taped message of congratulations that played on the stadium's video board during a 10-minute tribute.

"It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination," he said.

"Throughout the past century, the home run has held a special place in baseball and I have been privileged to hold this record for 33 of those years. I move over now and offer my best wishes to Barry and his family on this historic achievement.

"My hope today, as it was on that April evening in 1974, is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams," he said.

That, is why Hank Aaron is considered a hero and a man of integrity. The record isn't about the individual who achieved it, it is simply about the fact that it could be achieved.
