Did Koby Altman nail the rebuild?

Gotta give you props for it. You took heat at the time, but you nailed it.

Of course, a 7'1" unicorn with DPOY-level ability as a rookie doesn't hurt either. But most of the moves that Koby has made have panned out. The only ones that didn't were drafting Windler, trading four SRPs to get the pick for KPJ, and trading for Drummond; and in each case, the moves had logic to them, and the downside risk was minimal.

He's hit on Mobley and Garland for sure. I'd put Sexton and Okoro in the win column as well. He's also picked up Wade ('the real D-Wade") and Stevens off the scrap heap, and they have become contributors.

The trade for Allen is looking like an all-time heist. Having him locked in for 5 years at $20 million per? Outstanding.

The trade for Markkanen is looking like a win too. A big man who can shoot at $16 million per for four years? Yes please.

The trade for Rubio has paid great dividends as well.

GMs are always going to take heat on fan sites like this one. It's just how fan sites roll. But any objective analysis would say Koby has done very well.
To be fair, Windler has potential. The issue with him is health. If he can recover, he has the tools to be a contributor.

Altman has been on a roll since I posted this. Trading Dante Exum & a late first for Jarrett Allen & Taurean Prince is so lopsided I don't even have words.

Thanks for the props. I honestly can't believe we're 18-12, 4th in the conference. If you told me @ the start of the season we'd be this good, I would've lol'd.

But if we had just kept Griff we could have kept Kyrie and won it all in 2019 ...

Dan replacing Griff with Koby looks like a great move now.

I can't believe this thread is only a year old. It feels like forever when I posted it.
At this time last year it seemed like a stretch. But he has been on a roll ever since you posted - Mobley, Allen, Markkanen Rubio into the fold. Cedi looking like a bargain now that he’s regained his shot. Love being productive instead of a 30 million a year hole. Okoro & Garland taking big steps. Not overpaying for Sexton, but still having him as an asset. Identifying potential in Wade and Stevens and using the 2-way to try them out then lock them in.
Any other threads you feel like starting? Maybe “Koby Altman hoists the trophy.”

"The Cavs should have kept Kyrie because he would have been a good soldier and played hard, and he and LeBron would have led the Cavs to another Finals, and maybe LeBron would have stayed here" is a great work of fiction, on a par with anything Dickens or Shakespeare ever penned.

It’s to fiction what “Plan 9 from outer space” is to movies, with an even more fanatical cult following.

Essentially Rubio and Allen for Exum and that late first. downright highway robbery

Dan saw himself as a modern Zen master whose critical duty was managing the egos of multiple stars, and maintaining good relationships with their agents. That made him very popular with those players and those agents because they got what they wanted. Not surprisingly, those players and agents were full of praise for him.

The problem is that Zen Mastery isn't worth nearly as much if you aren't handed those established stars, and have to actually build a team rather than just manage egos.

I assume you’re referring to Griff here, not Dan.

And yeah, we should’ve known Griff’s roster construction skills were suspect when he was the one fiercely advocating to Chris Grant to draft Anthony Bennett in 2013.

Sexton is RFA. We can just match market value and the dynamics of the leverage have changed:
1. We are doing just fine without him
2. He will be coming off of a major injury.

We no longer need our leading scorer and the answer to whether this is a necessary core piece has gone from probably just yes to probably no.

That said, let’s not shit on the awesomeness of Sexton here. Keeps getting better, great TS%, and can get a clutch bucket. Just a tenacious work ethic and a tenacious spirit out there too.

Sexton can bet on himself with a QO, but that’s not a terrible outcome for us either. I could also see him just wanting to be a part of this, and having an efficient scorer off the bench would absolutely take us to the next level, as long as he can learn to pick his spots within our offense.

I thought it was Mike Brown who wanted Anthony Bennett.

Sexton can give the Cavs lineups that are very different looks than what we have right now. I think that becomes increasing important with the better this team gets. In a 7 game series, teams get figured out and they need to be able to pivot to other lineups.

It might be good for JBB to have to think about how he can use Sexton and make good lineups around him. Teams that lean too heavily into one concept seem to implode in the playoffs when their main lineup is being shut down by the opposing defense.

Brown might have liked Bennett, but Griff had more say and he was the one really pushing for Bennett. I believe Jason Lloyd had this covered in his book about the championship.
