I’m very skeptical about Mobley gaining weight. His greatest asset defensively is his quickness and mobility. Banging in the middle should never be his game, sacrificing any ability to close out on the perimeter to do that would be a big mistake.

He should be working relentlessly on improving his three point shot over the summer
The dude is 7’0, 215 lbs. He needs to add muscle simply to survive the league.

I don’t think you ever want him to be anywhere close to a 260 lb center here, but he can comfortably play at 235 lbs and retain all the things he does well. The right muscle, especially in his lower body, should help him be a more explosive athlete, not less.

Track guys lift weights, too.

That's interesting about his service, given everything that is happening.

That said, in my experience there is very little advantage to being 7-feet tall in the Army!

Do you think he was given a waiver to not to train with his unit?
You can extend the time for starting the military service up to when you are 29(or 28 cant remember). I guess for guys like Lauri there is some kind of a work around not to participate at all. I think it is wise for him to focus on his career now. Anyways it does not benefit either side so things will get sorted out later.

They reported last fall he had put on 10 pounds between draft day and the start of the season. He looked skinny last year. But probably not 7'0, 215 pounds skinny.

To my knowledge Lauri did never appear to his military service location this year. At least he not by deadline. So maybe later.... There have been some instagram posts by Bemorebasketball, so obviously he is sticking with his previous summer coach. I would have liked that change but lets hope they figure out some new moves.
He can't travel abroad outside of Schengen countries without permission from the Army, as he hasn't got the military-passport. Croatia is not part of the Schengen. He can't get a passport, or a visa, without permission from the Army, just like any other Finnish male who has been ordered into the Army service; it doesn't matter if you have started service or not (you get the military passport after you have fully served, while you do not need a military passport if you have not yet been ordered to service, or you have been fully excused (for example for medical reasons, or after having served the alternative civil service) from Army service, or after your 30th birthday).

Lauri Markkanen is probably going to play for Team Finland (nicknamed "Susijengi" aka "Wolfpack"***) in the World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Kroatia (the game against Kroatia is an away match, so Markkanen would have to get permission from the Army for that). The national team coach also hopes Markkanen will take part in the European Championship tournament, but that again depends on the Army and NBA/Cleveland to give permission for that.
The Google translated article from the national broadcasting company YLE site:

***Finnish national teams in different sports are called with different animal names. National hockey team is called "Lions", national football (soccer) team is called "Owls", national floor-ball team is called "Hornets", and national basketball team is called "Wolfpack". Each of those nick-names has a story attached to them, as is the case for all nicknames :)
I have no idea what everyone else is talking about but that article, in finnish, didn't mention army at all. The mention of "Finland" is mostly revolved around insurance of Markkanen playing basketball outside of NBA. There is not a single mention of Markkanen army status. Last thing any media outlet has talked about Lauris army was that he wasn't there to start the service at 11th of April because Cavs played their last game at 15th.

Is he not in a special army unit for athletes?

No, because he did not start the army service. He wasn't there because the Cavs were still playing when he was supposed to start. The rules are pretty lax for athletes. Even for non-athletes, regular people, can postpone the start of their army service if they want, even if they were supposed to start the service. Only problem comes if you are older than 28 because then you cant postpone the start anymore.

If the Cavs are committed to Lauri as a SF, I’d like to see him drop a little weight and work on his quickness, particularly his lateral quickness, as he needs to get better defensively at that spot. He also will need to be able to put the ball on the court and take his man off the dribble, when teams crowd him, as is likely with the kind of shooter he is.
One of other things he needs to improve on is playing more physical. When he does and is aggressive he is hard to stop. When he is passive and allows smaller players to push and squeeze him ,he fbacks up and gives up the ball too quickly.

As I mentioned already above, whether he is in the Army now or not doesn't matter. He was ordered to service, so now he needs permission from the Army to travel outside of the Schengen area, just like everybody else in the same situation. It very certainly is just a formality in his case, but that is the law. Not even Lauri Markkanen is above the law :)

I guess you are referring to situation where someone is ordered for service but decided to not show up so there will be arrest warrant for them? If you postpone your start of the service then the situation is different. You can even postpone your service after you have started it. I'm pretty sure Markkanen has postponed before the start because he knew he wouldn't be in Finland in April.

Edited for clarity.

Right, Mobley did not look weak or skinny by the end of last season. Lots of great PFs/Cs have played at 225 or 230

Mobley does have a high center of gravity so he will never be shoving people around in the interior like some of the more powerful centers have. He should stay wiry

Yeah I know this is the wrong thread…

No, basic situation where you have been ordered to service. I have three sons, youngest one of them went last autumn to the draft inspection ("kutsunnat") and received orders to step in next winter. We are planning a trip abroad in the autumn, by which time his passport will have expired. We had a similar situation a few years ago when my oldest son was in the same situation, and it came then as a surprise he didn't get a passport because he hadn't received clearance from the Army -> this time we are smarter, and he applied and is waiting for the clearance. I am pretty sure Lauri Markkanen does not have to wait for a couple months like regular dudes, but he still needs it.

Since we are both from Finland can you link me to actual finnish site stating this so we dont have to drag this any longer. RIght now there is nothing stating that this is issue for Lauri. Insurance is the only thing that has been mentioned.

Edit. What you are actually talking about is applying for passport. Pretty sure Markkanen has a passport so he can travel. For example from United States to Finland.

It is my understanding his passport (from 2017) expired this month.

This would have been alot easier if you would have said earlier that Markkanen cant travel because he doesn't have a passport since thats not public information. Cant really debate if that's true or not since that's not public info.
