Ah, the first draft day rumor of the 2007 offseason.

A source with knowledge of the Lions' plans tells us that the team currently intends to draft Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas with the second pick in the draft.

The disclosure surprises us, since this draft will present another opportunity (see 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) to use a top-end pick on a supposedly elite offensive player who then never lives up to his billing.

Even if the Raiders draft Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn or LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the Lions could have the other guy or Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson (who is, in our estimation, a turd-free Randy Moss).

The ultimate irony, of course, would be for the Lions to pass on a quarterback or Johnson based on the team's past experiences, and then for the guy they don't take to blossom into a Hall of Famer.

And we're not reporting that the Lions will draft Thomas no matter what. Last year, a prominent NFL analyst who will remain nameless (*cough* . . . <Mort> . . . *cough*) said that the Texans were definitely going to draft Reggie Bush
From profootballtalk.com

If Thomas is gone, who would you take?

Possibly Branch.

The Lions already gave their LT franchise-like money.

This is just smoke screen.

I want at least 5 or 6 guys with the 3rd pick damnit...

Calvin Johnson = Future MVP Caliber WR
Branch = Future Warren Sapp
AP or Lynch will both be studs..
Thomas should be solid at worst..

Profootballtalk.com isn't very reliable to begin with, so...

I really can't see how'd they would pass on AP or a QB with that pick... Matt Millen is still the GM there, so anything is possible...

If he's gone, I'd want anyone of the three:

JaMarcus Russell (if he doesn't go #1)
Alan Branch
AP

In that order... I'm beginning to think, if we really want a RB in the draft, we could wait until the 2nd or 3rd round and pick up a really good one... Like a Michael Bush (beast) or Kenny Irons...

Michael Bush would be a sweet 2nd Rounder..next year is a big time RB Class...Slaton and company..

Isn't Branch pretty much a 1 gap DT who can't play DE? I don't know if he's a good fit in a 3/4, even though he's a great player.

If the Browns draft JaMarcus Russell with their pick, my tenure as a season ticket holder will be over.

The man's a seymour type. He can play DE in the 3/4 or need be NT. Michigan does play a 3-4 hybrid.

If he is the next Sapp then why the hell would you want him?He maybe had a good year this year, but talk about an overrated player.Calvin Johnson seems like talent you can't pass up on.

Bush is too tall and runs upright a little much for my liking.

Your forgetting the best, McFadden. We'll get another top 5 pick nextyear so we got a good shot at him.

Branch sure played well when I saw him.
