Luke BIG ACTION Kornet

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kind of surprised Kornett hasn't been able to stay on teams very long. He looks worthy of a roster spot on most teams imo.

He is similar to Marrkanen - his lack of foot speed and physicality left him out of most NBA roster constructions. With the Cavs, they have assembled a defensive system that hides a guy like Kornet defensively.

I think he would be a great 2 way player for us. He isnt a good athlete, slow as you pointed out, but better athlete than Tacko, plus Kornet can shoot which is helpful if he needs to play. In no way do I think Kornet is a rotational player, but its always helpful to have useful backups as we have come to learn recently.

Job #1 on defense in the NBA is to be disruptive. For most the of NBA - disruption is created with athleticism and switchability at all positions.

Switchability left a guy like Kornet out of the rotation. His length is disruptive, but if he is too slow, he gets caught in between when isolated on a guard. The counter to a long, slow shot blocker is for immobile bigs to either step up and switch or sag off in coverage.

What JBB has done with Mobley and Allen is create extremely switchable bigs patrolling the back line of the defense. A zone benefits length, and a smart player with length will be able to hide slow feet. Somebody long but fairly immobile like Lauri or Luke need to be smart enough to know what they can and cannot do in funneling the offense toward one of those two players.

Agreed. I am sure JBB will have him close out on a shooter and if he gets blown by let the defense handle the guard at the rim. If he makes a midrange shot, so be it. That said, its why Kornet cant be a rotational player for us or in the NBA but he is allot quicker than Tacko, but so is the iceberg that sunk the Titanic allot quicker than Tacko.

I agree with all of the responses on Kornett. However, for a 3rd center it seems like you couldn't ask for much more. While slow he can stretch the floor with his shot, make an occasional block and give you fouls, and seems to play smart albeit pretty unathletically. In spot duty he doesn't look that awful to me. Granted highlights are highlights for a reason and not showing the bad plays :)
In some of the highlights I posted I was most surprised at some of the blocks he got when isolated on a guard. I liked how he gave ground knowing he could not move fast enough to stay with the guard and his length allowed him to block the shot even though he gave ground.

Lakers would kill for a big like this…..

This snarky question for PIP is rated E for everyone:

How can you love 2022 Luke Kornet and at the same time hate 1998 Zydrunas Ilgauskas?

- Slow feet, poor core strength

+ Length, shot blocking discipline, high hoops IQ, smooth jump shot

I don't know why people are calling Kornet slow (or Markkanen, for that matter... you can't even pretend to play defense at the 3 in the NBA if you are legit slow for a 7 footer. Lauri is no rim protector but his best defensive attribute is moving his feet well at the perimeter for a guy his size).

Kornet is 7'2''. He's a freaking giant. For as big as he is, IMO he's pretty nimble. His biggest problem seems to be that he literally has zero offensive ability other than catch and shoot 3's. For a center, that's far from ideal, even in the modern NBA where the corner 3pt shot is a premium big man skill.

That said, the guy is literally the perfect 3rd stringer center. He won't do stupid shit, he seems to try hard, he protects the rim and can make the occasional perimeter shot. Plus he's cheap. What more do you want?

Tacko Fall should never play ahead of Kornet.

Mannnnn. We used to have some HEATED debates about Z on this site. I was just re-living those same conversations last night when doing some grave digging on old threads.

Alrighty… So that contract is coming to an end…

What’s the ETA on that rest of the season contract heading the big man’s way ?

I think we are impressed and have seen enough to lock this in….

I prefer Kornet over Tacko
As do I. At worst, insurance for Markannen and Love when they're not available. Would rather he be on the roster proper.

Literally no announcements, no thanks for playing, nothing….

I’m holding out hope…

The 10-day contracts of Kornet and Anderson simply expired, which is why they were unavailable last night and there was no announcement. They actually terminated the contract of Tre Scott early, which is why that was mentioned in the game report. These were hardship exemptions to the 15 player list. They would need to cut a player to bring them back, even for another 10-day, since Goodwin is in for Garland and Newman is in for Osman. Could have cut Tacko, but he's a two way and maybe Kornet didn't even want that anyway.

A bunch of 10-days expired yesterday:
