Starbury Would Welcome Shift To Shooting Guard
4th August, 2005 - 3:04 am
NY Times - Stephon Marbury made it clear on Wednesday that he never thought he would be traded when the rumors emerged last month and that he was not worried now, either, with Larry Brown aboard.

Marbury suggested that people who bought into the trade talk just wanted to see him fail.

"They want me to go on a bad team so they can continue to drag me," said Marbury, who was presiding over his basketball camp at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. "But it's cool, though. I'm still here, I ain't going nowhere, and I'm still going to play the same way I play."

When he was asked yesterday about the intriguing possibility of moving from point guard to shooting guard, his eyes lit up. He even said that Brown once told him that if he coached him, he would play him at shooting guard.

"It's going to be kind of scary because now I can shoot whenever I want to shoot," Marbury said of the potential shift.

Hilarious. It's going to be scary alright. For New York fans. Then again, he already shot when he wanted to, so probably just more of the same.

He is overjoyed to be able to shoot when he wants to and not catch heat for it lol, here is the part that gets me...

"They want me to go on a bad team so they can continue to drag me,"

Um Stephon you are on a bad team. Everyone without a rookie contract is grossly overpaid. You have the largest payroll and still never crack the playoffs. You have like 6 powerforwards or more like 5 shooting guards and no true point guard. I don't think their is a worse team to look at then the Knicks at least the Raptors have Bosh and Bobcats have Okafor and Felton and May and stuff. Will he now claim I'm the best sg out there? with tmac kobe and wade out there? I think it's only a matter of time..

Marbury is still the worst player in the NBA..

Bad move, in my opinion (but if Starbury proves me wrong this season, so be it).

Stephon is a penetrate and dish type of point guard. He breaks down the defense off the dribble and kicks it out to the perimeter. Unfortunately, he is on a team that will only proceed to catch the pass and brick from the outside. If Marbury were on a consistent, uptempo jumpshooting team like the Seattle Supersonics, his game would really shine and some people who criticize him would say, "Wow, he's a good PG."

Which makes me wonder, do people view NBA players in terms of their individual skills or their circumstances (slam good individuals on bad teams but praise them if they get traded/signed to a better team-hop on the bandwagon)?

Because Marbury has never been a winner ANYWHERE.

He didn't win in Minnesota and then pouted and got traded.

He didn't win in Jersey and they got traded and they promptly went to 2 straight NBA finals.

He didn't win in Phoenix and got traded, they signed Nash and they won 62 games.

He isn't winner in New York.

Face the fact, Stephon Marbury is simply one of the biggest LOSERS in the entire NBA.

Add to that that Marbury is to much of a 'me me me' player that he has forgotten (if he ever knew) how to win basketball games. But your right CBBI, MeBury is one of the biggest losers in the NBA. He's lost every he went, and those teams have become winners after he left. So there is still hope for the Knicks, they just have to rid themselves of MeBury first.

Seriously though. If you play with one of the most versatile players in the game (Garnett) and are pouty, then that's an indication of how much of a team player you are.

I never liked this logic because individuals win in individual sports but individuals never win in team sports. Only teams win in team sports. Elton Brand is not a franchise player, a shade below that level but despite playing for bad teams in his career (pre-Deng/Gordon Bulls, Clippers), he is still an incredible basketball player. So saying otherwise would be foolish. On the same flip of the coin, Marbury is one of the most talented players in the league. In a game of 5-on-5, unless a guy totally quits on his team like Jeff McInnis did for us last season, I don't believe one guy totally tanks a franchise. When Starbury went to Phoenix, you can argue they played the Spurs every bit as close as the current Nash-Suns did this past playoffs. Also Nash's Suns had a more developed Amare and a better Joe Johnson to boot. Those situations cannot be cross-comapred because Amare this season was much better than even the Amare of last season (who was still impressive). New York is a difficult situation and no reasonable fan thought Marbury could turn that team into a winner. I wouldn't hold that again him. Outside of Tim Duncan, there isn't ONE player you can add to that squad and come out a winner.

I do agree that Marbury does have a ton of talent but I also think that he's not a winner. Everywhere he's been it seems the team gets better after he leaves.
It is sad. Marbury should be an all pro every year. He has as much talent as any G in the NBA. He just seems unwilling to do all the little things great players need to do and he's not a leader at all. There are times he appears to put stats over winning.

The move of Marbury to SG does seem to increase speculation about NY going after Snow. In Philly L. Brown had a similar situation with Iverson at SG and Snow at PG. The problem is getting a trade to work with NY that can help the Cavs and also doesn't have them take on bad contracts.
