Michael Sam - 1st openly gay football player

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A dilemma that I was curious about in regards to gay athletes. How does the dynamic change in the locker room... seeing as how a gay man in a men's locker room is essentially like having a straight man in a women's locker room, or a woman in a men's locker room, correct? If this makes other men in the locker room uncomfortable, it'll probably be seen as homophobic... when in actuality they may have a legit beef, no? We separate sexes for a reason in bathrooms/locker rooms. Doesn't make it a hateful thing, but I wouldn't be surprised to see things get complicated when more and more gay players enter the leagues.

He was out in the open about it all of last year, and Missouri seemed to have no problem with it. They were so distracted by Sam's homosexuality that they went 12-2 and won the Cotton Bowl.

I guess the correct response is, what do people think is going to happen? He's going to be so overwhelmed by all the dicks in the locker room that he's going to start jerking it as soon as people start getting undressed?

And if having him in the locker room is the same as having a woman in the locker room, then their ogling is the same. In that case, it's a compliment.

Seeing as how there have been closeted gay men in sports without locker room issues, the only thing that's changed is now everyone knows he is gay. If it wasn't an issue when it was a secret, why is it an issue now that it is public?

I swear Michael Sam and Chris Bosh are brothers separated at birth. It's like the same dude when they talk......

His dad sounds like a real son of a bitch...

Michael Sam's father not thrilled that his son is gay

When NFL prospect Michael Sam came out publicly as gay Sunday, he was largely applauded for his honesty and bravery by everyone from NFL players, coaches and executives to the Obamas. Sam's father had received the news several days earlier. His reaction wasn't nearly as enthusiastic. Michael Sam Sr. was celebrating his birthday at a Denny's near his home outside Dallas on Feb. 4 when he got a text message from his son. The All-American defensive lineman out of Missouri wrote: Dad, I’m gay.
“I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. told the New York Times. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment." He added: “I’m old school. I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy.” And so he is. The elder Sam said he took another son to Mexico to lose his virginity and grumbled that Hall of Famer Deacon Jones “is turning over in his grave” at the idea of an openly gay man in the league. The younger Sam had a tough childhood as one of eight siblings. His parents eventually separated, so his father wasn't always around. At one point, Sam had his own room at a close friend's house.“ I’m closer to my friends than I am to my family,” said Sam, who started coming out to friends and teammates as many as two years ago. Still, Sam Sr. said he loves his son and wants him to succeed in the NFL. “As a black man, we have so many hurdles to cross,” he said. “This is just one he has to cross.”

If I'm a guy who hates black people, I guess I'm also just "old school."

What a pathetic excuse and cover-up for homophobia. I feel for Sam here.

Damn. Hit the nail on the head here:

I'll add one that Dale did not mention:

Riley Cooper drops a ghastly "N-Bomb" on camera and his black teammates rally around him and rush to his side. Yet, there are players already saying Sam wouldn't be welcome into their locker room?

Pitiful.

Not really the best plug for Applebee's either. :chuckles:

He had way more children than he could support, and he was an absent father for most of Sam's life to the point where Sam started living with close friends. From the behavior of the father I can only imagine how neglectful he was. Perhaps he should be critical of the environment he raised his own children in instead of being critical of Sam. The impact Sam's sexuality will play in his ability to be a parent and provide a nuturing environment for his children is literally non-existant.

First time I got to see this. WHY IS IT NOT GETTING MORE RUN??? He crushed this.

Who the fuck goes to Applebee's for drinks?!

Sam's father says he was "terribly misquoted"

I LOL'd at this gem
The New York Times piece also quotes Sam Sr. as saying that NFL Hall of Famer Deacon Jones is probably 'turning over in his grave' because of the younger Sam's announcement. The Times article made that quote come across as somewhat negative, even saying that Sam Sr. grumbled the quote. However, the elder Sam says that quote was meant to be positive.

"I told them that Deacon Jones is going to roll over in his grave because here comes my son and that's he's going to be a star in the NFL," Sam Sr. said.

Why didn't he just say "my dog ate my actual quote". Would have been more believable.

Seriously, though, this type of copout really irks me. Either apologize and take it all back, or say "thats the way I feel, deal with it". The lame excuses of "I didn't say everything I said" is such a pussy move.
