According to a team insider, new Cavaliers coach Mike Brown has told assistant coaches Kenny Natt and Brendan Malone that they will not be on his new staff.

Natt has two years left on his contract, Malone has one.

It is believed Hank Egan, a former assistant with the Spurs and Golden State Warriors, will join Mike Brown's staff.

Tim Grgurich will switch from Portland to Cleveland under Mike Brown who is expected to reunite with Hank Egan, his San Diego State coach; they were also together on the Spurs bench a while back.
Hopefully this doesn't become jobs for the boys.

for As pathetic as our staff/in game coaching was last year change is good, but Brendan should be kept around, he did a great job down the stretch.

I just hope we dont see a Mike Brown Jnr sitting on the bench.

:werd:

Natt is heading down to Indiana to replace Brown I hear. I didn't expect either of them to stay on the bench for next season, our new coach is going to want his own guys.

A few words on Tim Grgurich.

Tim Grgurich, a 12-year veteran as an assistant coach in the NBA, returns for his second coaching tour with the Portland Trail Blazers. Grgurich brings his contagious hard-working coaching style back to the Rose Garden where he helped lead the Trail Blazers to the 1998-99 Pacific Division crown. He served as an assistant in Portland for three years before joining the Phoenix Suns' staff in 2002. During his tenure in the Rose City, the the Trail Blazers posted a 144-70 record (67.2%) during the regular season and were 17-15 in post-season play, reaching the Western Conference Finals twice. Previously, Grgurich served second stint on a George Karl led staff in Milwaukee in 2001-02. Before that, he was an assistant in Seattle under Karl for five-plus seasons and the Sonics won the Pacific Division four times and had a 312-116 (.729) record with him on staff.

Grgurich had a brief stint as head coach at UNLV in 1994-95. He previously worked at the school for 12 seasons as an assistant coach under Jerry Tarkanian, preparing emerging NBA standouts such as Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony, Armen Gilliam and Sidney Green. The Rebels won the 1990 NCAA title, had three Final Four appearances and sported a 34-1 record in 1990-91 while he was part of the program. His coaching career began in his native Pittsburgh when he was assistant coach at his alma mater, University of Pittsburgh.

During his eight-year stint he guided the freshman team to a 99-33 mark before he assumed the head coach position in 1975. Over five seasons Pitt was 71-70, with a 52-30 record and one NIT berth. Grgurich, who holds a physical education degree, was a three-year letterman in both basketball and baseball while an undergraduate at Pittsburgh and helped the hoop squad to appearances in both the NCAA and NIT tournaments. Grgurich and his wife Kathy are the parents of Jennifer and Suzanne
After a little reading it seems that this guy is a good pickup.

Some words on Hank Egan who is coming out of retirement for the second time.

Warriors Hire Hank Egan As Assistant Coach
Retired Spurs Assistant And College Coach Returns To Join Staff Of Former Player

Coming out of recent retirement to join the staff of one of his former college players, long time professional and collegiate coach Hank Egan has been hired by the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach, the club announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
“The Golden State Warriors are thrilled to be adding Hank Egan to our coaching staff,” said Warriors Chief Operating Officer Robert Rowell. “His track record in basketball speaks for itself, and this is just another step the organization is taking in order to maximize our growth and development.”

Egan, who announced his retirement from coaching on May 26, 2002, returns to the sidelines to join assistant coaches Phil Hubbard and Mark Osowski alongside head coach Eric Musselman on the Warriors coaching staff. Boasting more than three decades of coaching experience at both the NBA and college level, Egan had spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, helping guide the club to an NBA Championship in 1998-99.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Warriors,” Egan said. “This is the one job in the world that could have made me come out of retirement. The chance to work with Eric Musselman, whom I loved coaching and whom I feel has a tremendous future in the business, and to help shape the youthful and talented roster that exists at Golden State is a great opportunity.”

Prior to joining the Spurs, Egan spent 23 years as an NCAA Division I head coach, including 10 seasons at the University of San Diego (1984-1994). While at San Diego, Egan coached Musselman for three seasons (1984-85 thru 1986-87), including the 1986-87 campaign when the tandem helped lead the Torerros to a 24-6 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That season, USD also posted the best opponent field goal percentage in the country, limiting opponents to a .401 mark from the field while giving up just 60.3 points per game.

“Playing for Coach Egan was an experience I will never forget, and I look forward to being able to coach with him even more,” Musselman said. “As we sat down and evaluated what we had already in place on staff, we felt that he would be a wonderful addition to the staff. His wealth of basketball knowledge, developed over the past 30 years, is immeasurable when it comes to guiding the type of squad that we are going to have here at Golden State next season.”

Known as one of the top defensive coaches in the country during his collegiate tenure, Egan was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year following both the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons. A 1960 graduate of the Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, Egan began his coaching career in 1966 as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy. In 1971, he was named head coach at Air Force and remained in that position until 1984 when he took over at USD.

Good to see Brown getting some veterans under him. I was a little wary at first, but that came down to lack of knowledge on both guys.

Grgurich is a very highly respected assistant and considered one of the best in the league. He'd be a nice pickup. Egan is very experienced and does have big ties to Popovich.

I don't blame the assistants for coaching problems and decisions from last season. Ii think that mainly falls on Silas and also on the system that he installed.

I wonder what Stephen Silas will do now if daddy doesn't get a job? It sure is a shock that such a highly thought of coach like Stephen with such strong credentials hasn't been considered for any head coaching jobs.

I kinda wanted to see Natt and Malone back next season. I thought they both did a solid job, especially Malone. But I guess it's good for Brown to pick his own assistants that he will be comfortable with and he feels will do a good job.

His choices for assistants both sound like good ones. Some vets under a young coach.

Malone did less than a solid job in my opinion. We blew a good amount of must wins with him running the team.

Good bye DOUGH BOY!

i don't think the players took malone seriously, also, what was the guy going to do in that situation. He really had to just build off whatever Silas had been doing and hope it worked. In the end, it wasnt enough. I can understand Mike Brown wanting to start fresh though and pick his own assistants.

New Cavaliers coach Mike Brown will make Hank Egan his first hire this week, according to a source close to the situation.

Egan will join Brown as assistant coach. The hire will reunite Brown and Egan. Egan and Brown were assistant coaches together with the San Antonio Spurs, and Brown played for Egan at the University of San Diego.

Egan coached USD for 10 sea sons. He was known as one of the top de fensive coaches in the country. Dur ing the 1986-87 sea son, USD led the country in field-goal percentage allowed (40.1 percent). Egan was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year twice. He was the alternate coach to the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Egan was an assistant in San Antonio for eight years and an assistant at Golden State during the 2002-03 season under Eric Musselman, who also played for Egan at USD.

Egan began his coaching career in 1966 as an assistant at the Air Force Academy. He was promoted to coach of the Air Force in 1971 and remained there until he became coach of USD in 1984.

I think Brown is assembling a great crew around him for our team. I guess one more spot would be left. But I think Malone should have stuck around, he's a good assistant coach and would be able to bring a lot to the table still.

Cavs Hire Hank Egan as Assistant Coach

CLEVELAND (AP) -- New Cavaliers coach Mike Brown added his first assistant on Thursday, bringing Hank Egan, his former college coach, onto his staff in Cleveland.

Egan, who had been retired and out of coaching the past two years, coached Brown for two seasons at the University of San Diego. The 67-year-old Egan brings 39 years of coaching experience to Cleveland's staff. Egan has been an NBA assistant for nine seasons.

``I feel fortunate to have a coach of Hank's caliber join my staff,'' said Brown, who at 34 is the league's second-youngest coach. ``He brings great experience to our team. He has coached at all levels and has been a part of many successful teams as both a head coach and a trusted assistant.''

Egan was on San Antonio's staff when the Spurs won the NBA title in 1999. He coached at the Air Force Academy and San Diego joining the Spurs in 1994.

The Cavaliers also hired Bryant Moore as a video coordinator. Moore spent last season as an assistant coach at California-Riverside.
