Warriors Hire Hank Egan As Assistant Coach
Retired Spurs Assistant And College Coach Returns To Join Staff Of Former Player
Coming out of recent retirement to join the staff of one of his former college players, long time professional and collegiate coach Hank Egan has been hired by the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach, the club announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
“The Golden State Warriors are thrilled to be adding Hank Egan to our coaching staff,” said Warriors Chief Operating Officer Robert Rowell. “His track record in basketball speaks for itself, and this is just another step the organization is taking in order to maximize our growth and development.”
Egan, who announced his retirement from coaching on May 26, 2002, returns to the sidelines to join assistant coaches Phil Hubbard and Mark Osowski alongside head coach Eric Musselman on the Warriors coaching staff. Boasting more than three decades of coaching experience at both the NBA and college level, Egan had spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, helping guide the club to an NBA Championship in 1998-99.
“I’m very excited to be joining the Warriors,” Egan said. “This is the one job in the world that could have made me come out of retirement. The chance to work with Eric Musselman, whom I loved coaching and whom I feel has a tremendous future in the business, and to help shape the youthful and talented roster that exists at Golden State is a great opportunity.”
Prior to joining the Spurs, Egan spent 23 years as an NCAA Division I head coach, including 10 seasons at the University of San Diego (1984-1994). While at San Diego, Egan coached Musselman for three seasons (1984-85 thru 1986-87), including the 1986-87 campaign when the tandem helped lead the Torerros to a 24-6 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That season, USD also posted the best opponent field goal percentage in the country, limiting opponents to a .401 mark from the field while giving up just 60.3 points per game.
“Playing for Coach Egan was an experience I will never forget, and I look forward to being able to coach with him even more,” Musselman said. “As we sat down and evaluated what we had already in place on staff, we felt that he would be a wonderful addition to the staff. His wealth of basketball knowledge, developed over the past 30 years, is immeasurable when it comes to guiding the type of squad that we are going to have here at Golden State next season.”
Known as one of the top defensive coaches in the country during his collegiate tenure, Egan was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year following both the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons. A 1960 graduate of the Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, Egan began his coaching career in 1966 as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy. In 1971, he was named head coach at Air Force and remained in that position until 1984 when he took over at USD.
