Minor League Week 2 games (5/11 - 5/16/21)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm kinda surprised BOTH Bo Naylor & Tyler Freeman are not in the lineup today for Akron..
They normally are hitting 1st & 3rd in the Akron lineup.
Getting at least 5 runs today without those main cogs in a pleasant surprise.

Still looking forward to Marty's eyewitness report from going to Sundays game at Erie...

Sunday games updates..

Columbus loses 8-3 to Omaha
Good 2nd time for Kirk McCarty vs Omaha. 90 pitches, 54 strikes. 5.2 IP 3 runs (earned) on 5 hits & 1 walk. Also got 4 ks. Bullpen struggles (by Dowdy & Siri) doomed the Clippers

Akron loses 7-6 at Erie
Not a good 2nd time for Eli Lingos vs Erie. 32 pitches, 16 strikes. He lasted only 0.1 IP Allowed 4 runs (earned) on 3 hits & 3 walks. His relief allowed 1 of 3 inherited runners to score

Lake County wins 3-0 over Fort Wayne
Very good outing for Mason Hickman. The final CLE draft pick in 2020 went 5.0 IP with no hits allowed, 2 walks & 7 ks. 74 pitches, 46 strikes

Still in progress:
Lynchburg leads Salem 2-1 Now in the bottom of the 7th.
Mixed outing for Lenny Torres. 3 IP, 1 run on 4 hits & 1 walk allowed. Also got 2 ks. 48 pitches with 30 strikes

Final in Salem, Lynchburg wins 2-1.

CLE Affiliates went 2-2 on Sunday and are now 30-16 on the season..

Only NYY Affiliates had 28 wins coming into sunday but had more loses (28-16 coming in). That group is on its way to 3-1 for Sunday & 31-17 overall record..

Liked Hickman a lot when he was drafted.. a bargain spot, at that..

Ok, here’s my eyewitness report on Akron vs Erie on Sunday.

Arrived at the ballpark 45 minutes before game time. Entered the stadium and tried to find a scorecard and was told there is no such thing, but could scan a code into my phone to access rosters and starting lineups. Scanned the code and saw that neither Tyler Freeman nor Bo Naylor were playing. Then, since my oldest son collects autographs and now lives in Colorado, two of my other sons and I went to the Akron dugout area, hoping to get Freeman and Naylor to sign, only to be told that the players are no longer allowed, dictated by MLB, to sign autographs. Apparently paper scorecards and pens are infecting millions of baseball fans and players with Covid-19. So we went to our “seat pod” and settled in with the other 200-300 fans privileged to be allowed into the stadium.

Eli Lingos got the start and retired one batter before being removed. He topped out at 88 on the speed gun. Akron trailed 4-0 after one. They rallied to tie it at 5-5 but lost 7-6. No one of prospect interest pitched.

Oscar Gonzalez hit a monstrous homer to left. Will Benson had a triple and single and actually looked pretty good. Richie Palacios played 2B and made one phenomenal play that resulted in a double play. Marcos Gonzalez homered in the 9th.

Concessions at the park were bland and uninspired.

Possibly my least favorite minor league experience ever. COVID-19 and MLB combine to do their best to kill minor league baseball.

Sorry Marty... I was wondering how player/fan interaction was going to look this year. Seems to me they could get a little bit more creative and come up with something.

I will get to see things for myself soon.
Got my tickets for the Friday 6/4/21 game at Akron.... Its the Conetown USA promotion.

Based on what you said Marty I might try to get to a Lake County game next week or out to Toledo this weekend. I would be interested to see if items are like how you described at other places BEFORE Ohio relaxes its restrictions on 6/2/21..

Well, Mad, Pennsylvania had decided on Saturday that you no longer needed to wear a mask at the ballpark and that it is an honor system regarding vaccination - I was told that, if you say you’ve been vaccinated, they trust you’re being honest. Yet the irrational stupidity of America rages on. You’ve been vaccinated? You’re still willing to wear a mask on top of being vaccinated? You still can’t get an autograph or a scorecard and you can’t be closer that 6 feet from a fan in the next “pod”.

And does Lake County still have that immeasurably annoying “on-field DJ” who SCREAMS throughout the game?

Barley House, outside of the centerfield fence.. is more inspiring as it relates to food.. the porch there allows you to see into Canal Park.. fyi..

Sorry your experience wasn't uplifting or enlightening..

I noticed the following note on the Toledo MudHens website when looking at games this weekend vs the Clippers..

AUTOGRAPHS & PLAYER ACTIVITIES
  • MLB safety protocols currently prohibit players from signing fan autographs or throwing baseballs or other items into the seating bowl.

Trenton Brooks played first base on Sunday and, every time he picked up a foul ball, he sought out a kid in the stands and gently tossed the ball to him or her. He must not have got the memo.

Woops! The ball players don't all agree with it probably. Until fines are handed out, I don't think players won't throw a ball in now and again since that's just what we saw growing up. They will be doing it, just not in the same frequency like they were

MLB wants the rule in place for liability reasons.

They'll happily ignore players breaking the rule as long as nobody calls it out.
