Morneau edges Jeter to win AL MVP award

NEW YORK (AP) -- Justin Morneau won the American League's Most Valuable Player Award on Tuesday, edging Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees after a season in which his 34 homers and 130 RBIs helped the Minnesota Twins capture their division.

Morneau received 15 first-place votes, eight seconds, three thirds and two fourths for 320 points in voting by a panel of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Jeter got 12 firsts, 14 seconds, one fourth and one sixth for 306 points.

Joe Mauer should have won the MVP, IMO, but Morneau is a good candidate with the way he finished the season. Frankly, Derek Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball today, by a huge amount. He is a fine hitter, but his defense is mediocre and he gets by largely on looks and hustle. The only reason he is nationally known and adored is because he plays for the Yankees. If he played in Kansas City, he'd be looked at as an above-average player, and nothing more. But the Yankee PR machine has this guy hyped to the point where he will probably be a HOFer.
