I'm off for Turkey until Independence Day and where I'm going out of touch with the NBA. Hence my wishes for what I find out when I return:
1. That they get their god-awful front office situation straightened out before they start trading players either to get into the draft or reshuffle the current roster.
The risk of erring is just too high when you have novices running the show. First things first. Hire professional senior management and then start to restructure the team.
2. That if they get their god-awful front office in order, which won't happen until after the draft, they resign Z at a salary that permits them to make Joe Johnson an offer he can't refuse.
To get into the playoffs requires that you have seven or eight players, including some that are real good. Lebron certainly is real good, and will be great when he gets his defensive act together. Johnson is real good too, and Z is a solid NBA. Varejao will be good too, and I haven't written off Gooden yet. Maybe some of the rest will surprise. Better but not there yet in terms of quality players, which leads to my third wish.
3. If #1 and #2 come true, then stop. Let the team cook for awhile. Players on championship teams get to know each other, to blend in so to speak. Turnover may look good on paper, and is certainly fun in these threads, but this is not a team that should be completely rebuilt at this point. Resigning Z and adding JJ (and picking up a point guard to share the job with Snow) would be enough for me.
Happy 4th of July!
