Milt Newton

Two officials with knowledge of the situation said the Cavaliers will offer its president of basketball operations position to Detroit Pistons head coach Larry Brown at the conclusion of the Pistons' playoff run.

If Larry Brown gets out of his contract in Detroit and accepts the job, Washington Wizards director of player personnel Milt Newton is expected to become the leading candidate to become the team's next general manager.

If Larry Brown doesn't take the job, the general manager position will likely go to Pacers executive David Morway, who has been a top candidate for weeks. It isn't believed that Morway will be hired if Larry Brown comes on board.

The Cavaliers had no comment Saturday.

Anyone know anything about this Newton guy? I've never heard of him.

Re: Milt Newton

In all seriousness, I don't see Larry Brown connected with the Cavs. EVER.

If Larry Brown is hired, it's unclear what direction the Cavaliers would take with their GM. Other known candidates interviewed were Spurs director of basketball operations Danny Ferry, Nuggets assistant GM Jeff Weltman, Nets GM Ed Stefanski and former Magic GM John Gabriel.

Gilbert tried to interview Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe, but didn't get permission from ownership, and also chatted with Grizzlies president Jerry West, who had no interest in the job.

Here how we break this down....

If Larry Brown is hired - GM Milt Newton
If Larry Brown is NOT hired - GM David Morway

Please anyone except Danny Ferry---PLEASE!

Does anyone have any info on Danny Ferry? Any progress reports out there?

All I know is that he's the president of basketball operations for the Spurs, and their front office seems to be doing quite well.

Man, I don't want Larry Brown in our organization. He has a great mind, but he will disrupt things here. Gilbert should follow his instincts and go with Morway. We need someone who can assemble a good, stable team.

I really think Larry Brown is probably a done deal. If Milt Newton is hired than you know LB is here for sure.

I wouldn't have any problem with Danny Ferry being hired. He's well respected in the league and will be a GM someday soon. If L. Brown is hired as president than Ferry would be nice to bring aboard and to take over when Brown moves on within the next 3 years.
Like I've written that people need to separate L. Brown the coach from L. Brown the front office executive they also need to separate Ferry the player from Ferry the possible GM.

I still am not at all comfortable with this rumored new regime that will be taking over. I'm not crazy about any of these hires.

"AMBER ALERT" for FERRY

Ferry has supposedly interviewed with the Cavs and is in the mix as a possible GM. He's currently director of basketball operations with the Spurs. He's involved in all front office decisions and responsibilites. There's an interview with him that's now on the Cavs official website.

The same Eastern Conference executive said that either Milt Newton, director of player personnel with the Washington Wizards, or former Cavaliers forward Danny Ferry, director of basketball operations for San Antonio, will become the Cavs' general manager. Sources also said that Scott Perry, director of player personnel for the Pistons, may join the Cavs as assistant GM.

DFerry's name is still in the running.

I would actually prefer Ferry over Newton. It would also be nice if Perry was hired from the Pistons to join the Cavs front office. The Cavs would have some solid people in place to take charge when Larry Brown decides to leave us behind and go on to his next job.

It's also been reported that Morway dropped out as a candidate for GM yesterday. When he interviewed he was told that he would have control over personnel decisions but that had changed and the Cavs were going in a different direction.

The Cavs should have filled this void 1st if you ask me.
If you are committed to winning then you have to get someone in this postion to make a decision as far as who the Cavs next coach should have been.

Instead we have an owner who has no idea about running a basketball team making our coaching decision.

Hopefully he has some good help around him and a good head on his shoulders(since he's already made the coaching decision) because if not we could already be headed in the wrong direction and headed toward big trouble.

League sources say that Larry Brown's choices for general manager of the Cavaliers would be Danny Ferry, currently the San Antonio Spurs' director of basketball operations or Washington's director of player personnel Milt Newton. It is questionable whether Ferry would be willing to leave the stable situation in San Antonio in order to join a Cleveland franchise whose future depends upon the mercurial Larry Brown.
