NFL Draft Day 2 (Rounds 2 and 3)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No it isn't. And it would be a massive mistake to be closer to 50/50 when you have a QB who completing 70% of his passes for 8.9 YPA the last time he played.

Why then do we have Chubb, Hunt and DJ when they won't get the touches.... They will get 20-25 touches total a game if we went with the 60-40 offense, which wastes their talents...

My point was to setup a 50/50 that gets adjusted as Watson/Stef reads the defense and go with the hotter hand in a sense. If the opposing defense struggles against the run then game plan more run while they struggle against the pass then game plan more passes. We have a riches of talent with that so adjust from game to game. We also in my mind have more talent in the RB than the WR room.

We can make an extremely flexible and adjustable offense at the end of the day and being closer to 50/50 setup adjusting often to what is seen, I feel like is the best way to do it. It's not about Watson's passing numbers, but about seeing what the defense is doing and finding the holes in that defense. We don't have the WR room to do that against every team...

Situations change unexpectedly sometimes coach. Yes the Browns have Chubb, Hunt and DEJ all under contract, but all of those guys were in place before they acquired DESHAUN WATSON, ya know?

I'd much rather "waste" the running backs talents in favor of any Watson pass attempt because passing is inherently much more valuable than running.

They'll still run the ball to close out games and they'll still have a heavy play action presence, but they will be passing the ball much more often than years past and justifiably so.

I get that they will pass more and that makes more sense to me, but no way in hell it can be to the point they did in Houston is what I am saying. If we do, then we actually won't have the best possible offense since we will be wasting the RBs... We have two guys who can rush for 1,000 yards each in a rushing offense, but the passing to running ratio in Houston, wouldn't allow one to get it... Watson won't put up the numbers here in Cleveland he did in Houston if we want our best offense in my mind. If you expect that, then we have no need to have Chubb or Hunt...

Seems like you’re making the assumption that a run focused offense is better than a pass focused. I’m not so sure that’s the case in today’s NFL. Just because we have guys that can rush for 1000+ yards doesn’t necessarily mean that’s our best offense.

However, the good news is that we look like we now have both options available to us. Depending on matchup, we can exploit both types of game planning as strengths.

Respectfully, you’re over your skis here.

It’s simple mathematical facts. Elite passing is far more valuable than elite running. There’s just no scenario (speaking broadly here) where taking the football out of a great QBs hands is the most valuable thing an offense can do.

If Watson is performing like he did in 2020, it should be like a 65/35 pass to run split.

And if that does happen, and Watson puts up insane efficiency next year as a passer, the Browns are gonna go like 14-3 next year because we know they’re going to be one of the best run teams in the league in that 35% run share too.

Obviously it’s way too early to both see the full breakdown of who we got in the trade and evaluate it, BUT I’d be lying if I said I won’t be keeping an eye on some of those second round players we could have taken to see what we missed out on.

The front office has earned my respect so I should know better, but eek.

My guess is they will use DEJ as a trade chip in the preseason when things shake out. Maybe a player for player trade to solidify depth for both teams.

We are stronger skillset wise towards RB than receiving right now, yet we have a QB who has always been in a heavy passing offense. I personally feel like if we do to much passing, it will hurt us more than help us.

We may have a top QB, but if we pass that much, we won't go 14-3. We don't have the WR room for that much passing. If you think we can win with Chubb getting 15ish runs a game, then why in the hell didn't we trade him or Hunt when we got Watson?

Also I never said we are taking it out of his hands, I said we are going to be way more balanced than he was in Houston. If Watson is able to legitimately audible at the line, I think he can switch between the run and the pass at the line...

On a serious note, Do you know if Watson ever really used the audible in Houston? I don't really recall him doing it all that much. I always felt their was a disconnect with Mayfield and Stef when it came to that since if Mayfield didn't like the call, he wasn't really able to modify it. I am hoping with Watson, Stef calls the set and Watson calls whether they use the run/screen/pass from that set reading the defense. If we can do that, I think this offense is top 5 and it will be the proper mix of pass-run based off of opponents.

Well probably should get back to the draft... with what 3, 4th round picks... I think we can address DLine depth, TE and maybe add some OLine depth as well... All positions could easily be BPA as well..

I just want to come back to the point that drafting Matt Corral means the Panthers are definitively out on Baker. A late 3rd rookie who no one seemed to like, who comes from a one-read RPO offense and who will have a gigantic learning curve in NFL-level quarterbacking is the guy a coach and GM on the hot seat are comfortable rolling with where a losing season absolutely gets them both fired?

I can't tell if they honestly believe it, but if they do, then good luck! This is going to be the most predictable disaster season ever.

Is Matt Corral even better this season than PJ Walker? I doubt it... And their depth chart is those two and SAM DARNOLD. Enough said.

All fair points, but I think it is really more of an indictment of how they feel about Baker. AKA, no confidence that he’s going to be a net positive.

Absolutely. And I get all of that, but this is just an indictment on Carolina as is. If they think Matt Corral is the answer in year one... Yikes. The chances he's good enough to win 9+ games right away is what, a 2% chance? Less?
