(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

The wait is finally coming to an end, thank goodness. Walker is okay enough, but certainly not a dynamic play maker.

That roughing penalty on Day seemed weak as hell. He was coming in comparatively low, had momentum, and it just didn't seem like a cheap shot to me at all.

Sheldon Day was a beast in preseason and followed that performance with the highest PFF grade among non-Myles Garrett defensive lineman. Four pressures in one game is great from a backup three tech. He definitely has a role heading towards the bye week.

Those 20 consecutive offensive plays to jump off the game caused us to go deep...and the guys performed. Will be nice to have options on who to extend/keep/release after the season.

It was literally just a normal tackle. He wrapped Burrow up around the upper legs / waist and it wasn't a late hit either. Just one of many examples of refs trying to keep a losing team in the game with BS penalties.

A little good news to sprinkle in on a Monday:

PFF season updates on defensive backs:

Cornerbacks -
Denzel Ward 79.9
Greg Newsome 69.3
Troy Hill 64.1
Greedy Williams 70.9
AJ Green 68.4

Corners are creeping away from some rough games and becoming comfortable in their roles.

Safeties -
John Johnson III 64.8
Ronnie Harrison 57.7
Grant Delpit 50.4

This group had awful grades overall after the Chargers game, but since then the defense and their scores have been on the rise. Unfortunately Delpit has yet to fully wrestle more playing time from Harrison, which I think is the long-term best interest of everyone involved.

Just a general am I trusting my eyes right.

Browns switched to man after the second drive, right? At least from an outside receiver perspective?

Greedy has been a nice surprise.

I havent noticed Delpit outside of a few plays. Although he hasnt done anything where I have yelled at my TV.

Looked like a lot of Cover 3 and 4, which for a corner will allow them to split the field.

They mixed some man coverage into both the first and second drives. The Mike Williams and Higgins receptions on the sideline were against man, but the AJ Green breakup was also man.

The coverages mirror tendencies of the quarterback. I'm guessing Woods felt comfortable with some blitzes and man packages against Burrow because he is prone to careless throws under pressure.

Woods called a great game. He mixed in timely and well disguised blitzes with some max coverages, had Burrows not knowing if we were coming or dropping back, or where we were coming from.

Great game plan by Woods and excellent execution after the first couple drives.

STOP LINING UP OFFSIDES!

Why did Woods finally decide to use some blitzes and man coverage last Sunday after steadfastly refusing to do that in any of the games before that?

It was a ballsy move too because before last week, Burrow made defenses pay anytime they tried to blitz him.

I was a bit confused myself. Chase has seen more man coverage than any other WR in the league and I thought we'd be using a lot of zone. Looks like it was a decent mixture - I'll have to look for some film breakdown for more information.

I haven't had an issue with Woods play-calling much at all for awhile now other than a few redzone and 3rd and long situations. We started off facing some really good QBs though so I knew things might get a little better after that.
