I'm not sure if this has already been brought up, but something that I've been meaning to research and then finally did this morning is the fact that Odell has never had a fellow teammate with over 1000 yards receiving until this year.

I know there have been significant issues with the offense and we have not utilized OBJ to the best of his abilities, but maybe part of if "down" year is that he is playing with the best WR2 of his career? Also, for the record this will be the first season we've had two players over 1000 yards receiving since Braylon and K Will II from the U did it in 2007.

I agree that he has been consistent about good team leadership, playing through injuries, and such.

However, I hate to go here due to all of the other factors that go into a team, but...

this is the second time that he has come onto a 7-win team and it's ended up a 6-win team.

We can't ignore how it doesn't seem like "elite" WRs add many Ws to pretty much any team, at least compared to other positions at their draft capital/salary level; and I said the same thing about J.Gordon in his prime, for one.

I mean, the offensive scheme was just clearly not good and it wasn't putting anyone in the best position to succeed. Can't really blame any of the players for that.

And it's football. No one position other than quarterback can really have a significant impact on wins and losses.

I'm not particularly worried about Beckham.

Above all else, he just needs to get healthy. He really should have had that hernia surgery at the start of camp and then come back in like week 2 or 3 healthy.

I expect him to be a lot better next year.

Baker tends to throw balls high, especially seam routes. Sometimes I wonder if he and OBJ will ever be a good connection since OBJ is so small. Juice is clearly a tougher receiver and can go up and get balls in traffic, whereas OBJ is more finesse which might not be well suited to Baker's style.

That’s only this year. Baker was on-time and on-target with his throws last year.

He was worse this year, yes, but he still likes to put the ball pretty high. It's just that last year we utilized Higgins and Njoku far more. Darren Fells was the perfect redzone target for Baker, and hell, even Perriman had some big time jump catches.

Coaching is probably the second highest correlation to winning after QB.

Then it'll be offensive line and defense.

Skill positions are near the bottom.

Do you have anything that says otherwise?

I can't name a team in this millennium that won primarily due to skill positions. The closest I can find is the Falcons in 2017 getting to the SB with Julio being their most impactful player on offense.

They also have Matt Ryan, who is pretty good.

There is a baseline level of competency you need at each position to be successful. QB play is obviously the highest baseline and most difficult to reach.

I do think you can team-build in a way that emphasizes certain positions and skills over others, but the baseline for every group exists.

Whatever that baseline is, it's pretty low at the RB and WR positions. Look at what the Patriots have done, or the Giants when they were winning.

But I think having it low at receiver necessitates a higher baseline at tight end and offensive line. I think RB is the lowest baseline no matter what, but you can still have a good running game if you have a good O-line.

There is just not one correct way to team build. A lot depends on your QB’s skillset and your coach’s comfort level running different offensive and defensive systems.
