On The Clock: 2017 RCF NFL Mock Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With the 109th pick of the annual RCF fake draft, the San Francisco 49ers select:
C520EyzXEAEknK7.jpg

Will Holden, OT, Vanderbilt

HT: 6'7" WT: 311LBS.
ARM LENGTH: 33 1/4"
HANDS: 10 1/8"

Why?

Let me take you back to summer of 2016. The 49ers are optimistic about the offensive line after drafting guard Joshua Garnett of Stanford, John Theus in the 5th from Georgia, and taking a flier on 7th round tackle Trent Brown. They are also expecting Anthony Brown to unretire and anchor the right side of the line. Let me take you to December of 2016: Anthony Brown retired right before the start of the season, Garnett started at right guard but disappointed, and Trent Brown - who didn't get on the field in the Senior Bowl - was the starting right tackle. The run game struggled to open holes and the pass protection wasn't great. Enter Holden, who likely doesn't have the athletic traits to be a professional left tackle, but should be a starting right tackle for a long time. He started every game as a sophomore at right tackle, then surprisingly graded out as a very effective left tackle in the run game and pass game for the next two years.

He was credited with over 30 pancake blocks and 16 domination blocks his senior year protecting the blind side, facing strong competition. He's one of the fastest rising seniors along the line.

With the 110th pick in the draft, the JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS select:

AMARAH DARBOH, WR, MICHIGAN

HT: 6'2" WT: 214LBS.
POSITION: WR
SCHOOL: Michigan
ARM LENGTH: 32 5/8"
HANDS: 9 7/8"

Overview
Darboh's family story is very different from most other draft prospects. They left Sierra Leone to avoid war when was Amara was very young, coming to America (Des Moines, Iowa) when he was seven years old. Darboh became a United States citizen in September 2015. He played as a reserve as a freshman in 2011 (no statistics) but had to redshirt in 2013 due to a pre-season foot injury. Darboh came back to be a part-time starter in 2014 (36-473, two TD) and then earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades in 2015 (58-727, five TD). His senior year was his best, becoming a second-team all-conference player as the Wolverines' leading receiver (57-862, seven TD).

ANALYSIS
Strengths
Good NFL size with above-average arm length. Experience in Michigan's pro-style passing attack. Saw increase in targets and responded with improved production. In 2016, had at least one catch of at least 30 yards in eight of first nine games, outplaying highly regarded teammate Jehu Chesson. Fluid working two-way releases from slot. Smooth transitions in his routes. Won't give away plant-and-go cuts to the post, allowing him to stay ahead of the cornerback. Heady player. Adjusts routes to create better throwing opportunities for quarterbacks. Accepts responsibility as blocker climbing up to cornerbacks with some urgency of engagement. Able to sustain his block when run play flows his way. Locks up back-side safety blocks.

Weaknesses
Build-up runner who is slow to eat up cornerback cushion. Play speed appears to be average. Missing suddenness and twitch. Inconsistent release quickness against press. Could struggle to uncover against aggressive man coverage. Gradual sink into breaks alerts cornerbacks to slam on breaks and challenge the throw. Body catcher. Ball will beat him up and he suffers from focus drops. Needs to improve positioning against defensive backs. Rarely escapes a spirited tackle attempt. Not very dynamic after the catch.

Sources Tell Us
"The all-star game and combine will determine where he gets drafted but I think he's a good player. He's bigger and faster than you think. Practices hard and is a good athlete. Harbaugh demands some toughness from his receivers, too. He will be a pretty good pro." -- NFC executive

Bottom Line
Darboh caught the attention of scouts from very early on in his final season at Michigan. Darboh's outstanding size will have some teams excited, but he needs to run well at the combine in order to be targeted as a "size/speed" prospect. He lacks the quickness and hands to make a living underneath, but has the physical traits and willingness to help as a blocker that could get teams to bite on the second day of the draft (Rounds 2-3). Scheme fit could determine whether he becomes a WR2 or just a guy fighting for snaps off the bench.

Jacksonville Draft Recap:
Leonard Fournette, RB
Evan Ingram, TE
Mitchell Trubisky, QB (traded away Bortles)
Amarah Darboh. WR

My Take:
Bears add some extra beef behind Eddie Goldman in the middle. Taylor's a true nose tackle, but his versatility could see him play some five technique as well. There were more pressing needs on the current roster (swing tackle, backups at both safety spots) but going BPA with a talented defensive linemen represents the best value.

VincentTaylorOSU_t600x400.jpg

Stats to know: 43 total pressures tied for 11th among all interior defensive linemen in 2016.

What he does best:

  • Tremendously powerful, uses heavy hands to shock lineman as he engages.
  • Consistently stands up blockers on initial contact.
  • Flashes ability to generate vertical movement against single blocks in the run game.
  • Displays good leverage and strength when bull rushing, consistently able to collapse the pocket.
  • Possesses sufficient power to disengage opposing lineman with just one arm.
  • Multi-dimensional pass-rusher, beat blocks using the swim, rip and arm over moves intermittently.
  • Forces offensive lineman to overextend with a developed push/pull move.
  • Sufficiently athletic for the position, unbalanced offensive lineman with quickness occasionally.
  • Refined upper body technique, displays good hand placement and ability to “get skinny” to penetrate.
Biggest concern:

  • Fails to consistently shed in the ground game, despite generating an early advantage in reps.
  • Lacks patience to find the ball, occasionally loses gap discipline.
  • Overly aggressive at times, widens lanes with attempts to penetrate.
  • Rarely generates pressure if initially blocked, lacks a variety of counter moves.
  • Not the stoutest against double teams, can be surprised by blindside chips.
  • Not the smoothest when required to change direction.
Player comparison: Michael Brockers, Los Angeles Rams

Like Brockers, Taylor has a long frame and both players can have their problems with double teams if they don’t win right off the snap. Brockers has had a solid career for the Rams, and Taylor should have plenty to stick around as a productive nose tackle at the next level.

Bottom line: If not for the depth in this class of defensive lineman, Taylor would undoubtedly have received more attention. He put together a remarkably impressive junior year, flashing an outstanding physical skillset. Taylor is already a well-developed pass-rusher, despite his tender years. In order to succeed at nose tackle in the NFL, however, he’ll need to improve against the run. Although Taylor flashed a spectacular skillset, consistency remains elusive.

It looks like he squatted down and pooped a football.

Maybe it's just because it reminds me of the time my friend tried golfing with food poisoning, and that's the exact same stance he was in when he realized the twosome behind us had crested the hill and was watching him shit in the woods.

Tyler Orlosky, a West Virginian who publicly poops in crowded stadiums while pointing to his buddies, goes to Hollywood. This doesn't just sound like a value pick, this sounds like a reality television show.

The Chargers select Eddie Jackson, S, Alabama.

We haven't adequately replaced Weddle and the secondary in general needs an injection of talent. He should benefit from a strong pass rush if he's forced to step onto the field earlier than we would like him to.

Sorry, on my phone holed up in a hotel in Chicago.

My Take...
Safety is still a massive position of need on the Redskins roster, even with the pick of Marcus Maye last round. Lorenzo Jerome does not have elite NFL athleticism, but has great football instincts and this should help him at least be a depth contributor in the Redskins secondary. The secondary is one of the weakest parts of the roster, so adding both Marcus Maye and Lorenzo Jerome this draft helps shore up that weakness.

Overview

Jerome earned enough recognition throughout his four years as a starter for the Red Flash that the Senior Bowl came calling after a senior season where he was named a first-team FCS All-American by the Associated Press. Jerome intercepted six passes in 2016, to go along with 59 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 11 pass break-ups, and a kick return touchdown (14 returns for 405 yards). He was a first-team All-Northeast Conference selection in every season of this career, starting as a true freshman (56 tackles, six INT -- one returned for a score, 10 pass breakups). He excelled as a sophomore as a defender (79 tackles, two TFL, three INT -- one for a score, 16 PBU) and returner (14-289 kick returns, 12-136, one touchdown on punts). Jerome repeated that production in 2015, earning second-team All-American honors (58 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, three INT, 10 PBU).

Analysis

Strengths

Has outstanding instincts and ball skills. Has the strong hands and catch radius of a wide receiver. Takes direct paths to the ball and operates with optimal timing in attacks on the football. Ball production was through the roof during his entire career. Has experience playing over the slot and will overlap his coverage if he smells the football headed near him. Former high school quarterback with a good feel for the game. Rose to the occasion in a big way at both NFLPA game and Senior Bowl grabbing two interceptions in each of those games. Seems to find access to a second gear with the ball is in the air. Aggressive in run support. Races downhill and attacks the legs each and every time. Flashed dangerous potential as a kick and punt returner in all four years in college.

Weaknesses

Lacks desired NFL size. Teams will want him to add weight to hold up to his physical style if his frame allows it. Scouts question his overall speed after a spring timing of 4.62 in the forty. Is a little bit tight hipped and he barely lifts his feet off of the ground when he runs. Benefitted from playing in slot, but may not be able to do that in NFL. Will grab receivers around the waist and hang on when beaten in a route. At times, gets so wrapped up in taking the ball away that he will get lax with his technique.

Sources Tell Us

"He was easily the most instinctive safety at the Senior Bowl. He jumps everything, and I mean everything. I don't think he knows what NFL speed is going to look like so he could get himself in some trouble if he just wants to sit on everything. He has average athletic ability and average speed from what I can tell on tape. He's a good football player though." -- AFC National scout.

Bottom Line

While he's not the biggest or fastest safety, he does not back down from the physicality of the position and he has a second gear when he's chasing after the ball. NFL teams love instinctive safeties who take the ball away and Jerome is working on a Master's Degree in both categories. Teams will have to decide how he best fits inside their defense, but Jerome's ability to return kicks and his ability to take the ball away should help him find the field fairly quickly.
