On The Clock: 2019 RCF NFL Mock Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I deleted @AZ_ post because it is incorrect. The original post has not been updated since everyone started trading like drunken sailors on shore leave. Looks like both @Soda and I had commitments on the same evening. One of us should be able to update the OP today.

We have started the fourth round.

#103 @Jack Brickman
#104 Randolphkeys
#105 @Triplethreat

Panthers should still have #100. Not sure what is going on.

With the 100th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select

.... Jalen Hurd, WR, Baylor

Hurd was a five-star running back recruit who ranked among the top 10 players in the country at his position despite playing in just one game as a senior due to a shoulder injury (he was Tennessee's Mr. Football in 2012 with 3,357 rushing yards). As a true freshman at Tennessee, Hurd led the Volunteers in rushing (190-899-4.7, 5 TDs) and also contributed as a receiver (35-221-6.3, 2 TDs) while starting 9 of 13 games played. He made an impact in his first bowl game, rushing for 122 yards and two scores against Iowa in the TaxSlayer.com Bowl. He was a second-team All-SEC pick as a sophomore, starting all 13 games, again leading his team in rushing (277-1,288-4.6-12), being active in the passing game (22-190-8.6), and excelling in the postseason (Outback Bowl MVP with 24-130-5.4, TD vs. Northwestern). Things began to change in 2016 when Hurd started the first seven games of the year (112-4541-3.7, three TD) but suffered a concussion. He approached his coaches about a position change due to the head injury, and when they declined to move him, Hurd decided to transfer. Baylor accepted him into the fold in 2017, and he sat out the year while learning the wideout position. Coaches used him as a running back on occasion (48-209-4.4, three TD) during his senior season, but he won the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year award because he led the Bears in receiving (69-946-13.7, four TDs) while starting 11 of 12 games played. Hurd had a procedure on his knee in December, missing his team's bowl appearance.

Overview
Hurd was used as big slot but he might need to transition into a role outside to take advantage of his potential to stretch the field as a downfield ball-winner. He's still learning the nuances of the position, but he has outstanding traits, a great work ethic and an ability to get much better very quickly. While Hurd will be an NFL receiver, he offers a unique option of becoming a short-yardage banger near the goal line. His best days are in front of him.
Strengths
  • Driven to prove people wrong after move from running back to receiver
  • Elite size and length with plus athleticism
  • Has physical attributes to drastically improve as a route-runner
  • Sways defenders with aggressive head and shoulder fakes at route turn
  • Understands route leverage
  • Future jump-ball winner in red zone
  • Uses size to squeeze out additional yards after contact as receiver
  • Has length and frame to bully-finesse cornerbacks
  • Long arms stab throws both high and wide of his frame
  • Courageous to catch and secure in traffic in the face of inevitable punishment
  • Used as running back at times and could offer unique roster flexibility
  • Can batter defenses on short yardage once he gets momentum downhill.
Weaknesses
  • Will need to expand route tree and learn to play outside the numbers
  • Leggy with below-average short-area quickness
  • Could struggle to defeat press coverage early in career
  • Hasn't learned to vary route speeds just yet
  • Hits his turns at high speed and drifts up the embankment
  • Not a natural pass-catcher
  • Needs to be catch-ready sooner to prevent throws from eating him up
  • Lacks experience tracking and stacking down the field
  • Disappointing effort as a blocker

Reasoning: Current GM, Bigfoot has gone rogue this draft. Locking into two of the top available prospects in the secondary were both great moves for the team. Since then, Bigfoot has drafted Drew Lock & Hurd in an effort to rebuild on the fly while Cam Newton likely sits out the season. Hurd is a nice compliment to the already deep receiving core of the Panthers. Hopefully he stands out after a year of development.

@raiders91sc and the Patriots have one more hour, then I will be awarding the team a player to move things along. Unfortunately he hasn't logged on since last night.

With the 101st pick in the 2019 RCF NFL Mock Draft....

The Super Bowl Champions select...

Trayveon Williams

5' 8"
206 lbs

RB

Texas A/M

Overview
Productive runner who added weight and stepped into an every-down role and became one of the big SEC surprises in his first season in Jimbo Fisher's offense. Williams isn't overly dynamic by NFL standards, but he's a calm runner who stacks moves and eludes defenders to post his fair share of chunk runs. He's tough but undersized and might get pigeon-holed as a committee back with above-average third-down value thanks to his tenacity as a pass-blocker.

Sources Tell Us

"The road scouts weren't really feeling him but I just take that kind of production seriously with SEC backs. And it's not just this year; he's had three years at it." -- Area scout for NFC team

32. New England Patriots - Jachai Polite, EDGE, Florida
56. New England (from Chicago) - Greg Little, OL, Mississippi
64. New England - JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford

97. New England* - Caleb Wilson, TE, UCLA

@SuperSurge on the clock. I know he is on a work trip so if he doesn't pick by the time I am winding down for bed, he gave me directions on what he wants with this pick.

What time are you planning on winding down? Because I am around to make my pick until 12 or 12:30 EST.

What time are you planning on winding down? Because I am around to make my pick until 12 or 12:30 EST.

Let's make 11:45 EST the cutoff for @SuperSurge to make his pick. He gave me some instructions on what he wants on his next pick, I just want to give him the chance to make his own decisions.

The Rams select:

Defensive Line: Terry Beckner Jr., Missouri

A 6'4", 305-pounder at just 21 years old, Beckner is the type of 3-technique pass-rusher NFL teams are looking for. He's also athletic enough to move around a defensive line and potentially play as a 5-technique in a 3-4 base scheme. His burst, power and instincts as a defensive tackle prospect have caused scouts to sing his praises all season long.

Throughout his senior season, Beckner has been a wrecking ball while drawing the attention of most offensive lines. He's generated 9.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks while playing better all-around football and showing an improved ability against the run.

With Suh likely not returning, its a natural selection.

@Jack Brickman is up.

With the 103rd pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select...

Lonnie Johnson, CB Kentucky

Per NFL.com:

Overview
Long and tall with physical traits galore, Johnson looks the part but lacks the consistency and ball skills expected of a starting NFL cornerback. He has enough athleticism to make it as a cornerback, but he could be tied to a press-and-trail scheme where some of his coverage deficiencies can be covered up. His physical gifts could get him overdrafted, but he can become an eventual starter if he hones his ball skills and finds the right scheme fit.

Strengths
  • Exceptional size for the position
  • Long arms dangle down his side
  • Has physical traits to become much more effective from press
  • Offers up a stiff jab to stall receiver's release near goal line
  • Adequate smoothness in backpedal
  • Fluid feet in early stages of mirror-and-match from press or off-man
  • Lateral transitions are fluid
  • Adequate eye balance between high/low routes from zone
  • Effective use of length when throws are in front of him
  • Shows flashes of aggression to become better in run support
  • Dangerous off the edge as kick blocker
Weaknesses
  • Lacks consistent competitive nature
  • Motor runs hot and cold in run support
  • Content to allow catches in front of him without squeezing the route
  • Below-average ball skills and instincts lead to abysmal ball production
  • No interceptions and only eight passes defensed over two years
  • Rarely finds football once back is to the passer
  • Slow to gather feet and trigger on throws from off coverage
  • Rare to see him track ball or challenge at the high point
  • Speedsters eat his cushion and fly by him on go routes
  • Lacks top-end makeup speed to run down mistakes
  • Below-average route anticipation to stay connected
With this pick, I'm taking a developmental corner prospect with the hopes that he can develop into a star over the next few years. The hope is that he can learn from Patrick Peterson and my third-round pick Julian Love, whose strengths match up well with Johnson's weaknesses. Johnson has the physical tools, but just needs time.

Cardinals Draft:
1.01 - Kyler Murray, QB Oklahoma
2.01 - N'Keal Harry, WR Arizona State
2.11 - Chase Winovich, EDGE Michigan
3.01 - Julian Love, CB Notre Dame
4.01 - Lonnie Johnson, CB Kentucky
Trade - Royce Freeman, RB

@Randolphkeys and the 49ers are up.
