QB Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would barf if we ended up with Bridgewater

I’ll continue to say Teddy Bridgewater might be someone to keep an eye on with Stefanski being on the coaching staff in Minnesota..

Trubisky and Mariota make sense as an upside backup QB play but not a realistic option as a starter..

I see Cousins/Garoppolo as the most likely options, given they’re likely attainable, wouldn’t cost the entire war chest and provide an upgrade to Baker.. Contracts may pose an issue but I trust Browns would be able to work through that (as we’ve seen with recent FA acquisitions).. Fact is, if you want a non-rookie QB there is a certain expected price you’ll pay..

I’m intrigued to watch which QBs get displaced as a result of the QB carousel (I.e. Tua and Hurts, maybe)…

Why are Tru and Mariota not realistic options as starters?

Just bite the bullet and take a QB in Round 1. No other option makes sense or is realistic.

I think they're very realistic options, especially since both are former high first round picks who have starting experience. An added bonus is the Browns can sign them as unrestricted free agents, without having to give up compensation, as they would have to for Cousins or Garoppolo.

And start him from day one?

If they take any QB in the first two rounds, specifically in round two because no fifth year, you have to play them. There’s no question that the sitting and learning thing has been successful twice in the last two decades, both because the guy getting the ball had ball of fame arm talent the day they were drafted.

While not the easiest thing, there are certainly a list of rookie QB's who have started for their team in year 1 and made it to the playoffs. Mac Jones is going to do it this year.

Mac, Lamar, Dak, Russ, Matt Ryan, RG3, Dalton, Luck, Kyle flipping Orton, Mark Sanchez, Big Ben, even further back you have Marino and our own Bernie.

8 of the 13 werent top 10 picks. Its possible, and probably a better option than running it back with Baker. Could be a good compliment to someone like Bridgewater or Trubisky.

Other issue is this QB draft is not especially deep and doesn’t have any QBs who are first round talents (but may get pushed into the 1st round because of positional demand)..

I just don’t see taking a QB as a realistic option and taking one just to take one within the top 100 picks doesn’t make sense either, especially with next year likely being the year you really address the position… Browns just need to find a bridge until then..

Berry has said the QB position is the most important position on the team, you really think he goes into next year with Mariota or Trubisky starting after what happened this year? I’m far from a Baker supporter but even I would lean towards giving Baker another year over making either the starter.

From 2017-2020, Trubisky was 35th in EPA — he’s just not good… He holds a career 2.5% INT%..

Mariota ranked 25th in EPA from 2015-2019, so better but still not good.. His career INT% comes in at 2.4%..

For reference, Baker ranks 27th in EPA over last 4 years and has a career 2.9% INT%..

So with that, I just don’t see how Berry/Stefanski could go into next year with someone who was less/on same level when it comes to overall efficiency and decision making.. This is why I say I’d see them as high upside backups, where they’re insurance policies should the bridge/Baker not work out but shouldn’t be counted on as the main plan..

I just don’t understand how these advanced stats translate when you’re working with an entirely different line, different scheme, coaches, running game etc….

I understand needing them to evaluate but when each situation is potentially different how can it be used as a deciding factor ???

Also has $35M guaranteed contract, with a $45M cap hit, for 2022. That contract makes him almost impossible to trade for.

For what it's worth, any team acquiring Cousins would only be on the hook for the $35M. That extra $10M in signing bonus money would go on the Vikings cap.

With Baker locked in for $18.8M, it's would be a $16.2M increase over what the Browns are currently projecting to pay their starting QB.

Not great, but not outrageous. Cousins would probably be my 6th or 7th choice this offseason of all the guys that could be available.

Woke up ready to sell my soul for Deshaun Watson. If the whole world seems to have forgiven and forgotten that Ben is a two time rapist then the same can be done for Watson.
If we knew that his legal troubles wouldn't affect his playing time, I'd pull the trigger immediately. Is it gross? Yeah, but we don't have any other realistic options.

Right. Put Trubisky or Mariota behind the same line and with the same offensive weapons that Baker had? How could you possibly compare their previous situations to one where Baker was literally setup not to fail, and still somehow did?
