Deshaun Watson: Third Highest Paid QB in the AFC North (OUT for 2023)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would absolutely expect Watson to be rusty this year, but I'd be pretty shocked if he just forgot how to play football. It's not like he was rehabbing a serious injury. He was presumably putting in work the entire time he's been off.

I'm not going to sweat it much if he looks bad when he first gets back. I'd honestly expect it, and if he's not it will be a pleasant surprise.

Where is he hiding out and how does he spend his time?

It matters what his practice regimen has been and continues to be. He should be practicing with ex NFL/NCAA players and private coaches to keep his game action going, even though it can't replace actual game speed and practice with his teammates. This isn't Michael Vick being in prison for a year and a half.

Any chance he never returns to form from being away from the game for too long?

Not worried. Tom Brady blew out his knee and missed a full year. He was fine. Many examples of guys missing a year. And let’s be clear, DW is not missing two years. He was on the Texans PS and in Browns training camp and a pre season game, plus he will play the last 6. Anyone saying he has been away two full years is missing a lot of that stuff I mentioned.

There will be rust for sure. Game speed etc, but dude didn’t retire.

Here’s the thing, Watson doesn’t need to be his old self this season for the Browns to make the playoffs. This is assuming we are around 6-5 when he returns. If the running game and defense performs as expected, he just needs to play like Brissett did in game 1, but connect on one or two of those open passes.

I don’t think he’ll be playing at an MVP level by any means, but I don’t know why he couldn’t play like a top 12 QB with a great running game and top D supporting him. He shouldn’t have to carry us to win games. Just adding a QB that can be a threat to throw the ball down the field will be huge, and we should be able to play action teams to death.

I genuinely don't expect Watson to be rusty for more than like one game. Two at the most. I think people are getting a little too caught up in how he looked in like 10 preseason snaps where everything was generally half speed and the Browns weren't even playing a bunch of their best guys.

He's going to be stepping into a real good situation assuming the Browns are relatively healthy by the time he's back. Very good OL. Great stable of backs. Capable enough pass catchers.

I don't anticipate it taking a long time to get him back to form.

Going off of this, it was really only truly one bad pass- the first pass of the game where he badly missed Schwartz. Other than that, Watson didn't have much of a chance to do anything to no fault of his own.

Snap 1- badly misses open Schwartz
Snap 2- Schwartz drops a slant
Snap 3- HB draw on 3rd and 10

Snap 4- DEJ stuffed on run for 0 yards
Snap 5- DEJ fumble

Snap 6- Rush play to Kelly with holding penalty on DPJ
Snap 7- 7 yard pass to Njoku on 1st and 20
"Snap 8"- False start on Dunn
Snap 9- Watson's mobility on full display hitting an open Schwartz on 2nd and 18. Only to have Schwartz drop the ball. Play would've been called back anyway to a Wills hold
Snap 10- 3rd and 18 throws low to Felton on an incomplete 8 yard slant. Didn't seem like the Browns were interested in trying to pick up the 1st down on this play.

Deshaun Watson has torn his ACL twice and came back better both times. I think he'll be fine. Plus he's been practicing for the entire duration he's missed games up until these first 11 weeks.

And he’s allowed to return to the facility and begin practicing again long before his suspension is up as well.

And if a top 5'ish (or 7'ish wherever you had him ranked) QB returned a little rusty, how much worse would he be than who he is replacing?

If rusty-Watson plays at an average-QB level he'll likely be better than Brissett anyway. And by the time we reach the playoffs (if we're there), maybe he'll have most if not all the rust knocked off.

We have a shot at the Super Bowl THIS YEAR. Might be unlikely, but it's there.
