Deshaun Watson: Third Highest Paid QB in the AFC North (OUT for 2023)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think Watson needs to be playing anymore in the preseason either, but I suspect the vast majority of NFL players don't consider him a bad guy in any respect.
I don't think the majority feel that way either. However, it just takes one. One nobody who isn't set to make a roster thinking landing a shot on Watson will guarantee him a spot. There's no reason to test those odds.

NFL players don't think like that. No player is going to risk his chance at a roster by doing something that stupid.

I think you have it backwards.

Someone on the outside looking in could definitely do something stupid if he felt it would get him onto the team instead of being cut.

Big hits get the coach's eyes on you. For a lot of fringe guys, that's their goal.

Again, I'm not saying players are thirsty to do this. I'm saying there is the chance that one player could feel this way--and if you're the Browns, or any team in the NFL, nobody is stupid enough to risk serious injury to their franchise QB over meaningless reps.

I'm not denying that a player can feel this way. I'm saying that there are enough players and coaches who would not allow that to happen. This is similar to how in the NBA they have pretty much eliminated that goons. They don't bring dudes like Kendrick Perkins in the game in garbage time to commit hard fouls to show toughness anymore.

The way the NFL moves now, if a player on the bubble tried to pull a stunt like this they would more than likely have to go rouge which would not benefit the player in the long run anyway.

15 years ago I would've agreed with what you said but the league is way different now. Hell half of the coaches are best friends and shit. I was just watching highlights of the Super Bowl and I was looking at how Sean McVay and Zac Taylor are really good friends and I can't imagine that there are any real beefs between any current NFL coaches to allow a goon type of preseason play to happen. There's always a chance but I doubt it makes it to the field.

Gonna be a whole lot of pissed off "wHeRe Is ChUbB?" fans when Watson comes back :chuckle:

No one’s going to be pissed if Watson is shredding a defense out of an empty backfield. I would imagine you’ll see the Browns lineup with Hunt or Chubb in the backfield and motion them into an empty set.

Now, if he’s holding onto the ball too long, getting sacked, and the Browns aren’t converting situations when they should be running the ball, then sure, everyone’s going to be calling for Chubb.

Cool, then we're in agreement.

You're thinking about this too much.

If you're someone who likely isn't making the roster, and you beat the tackle, turning and finding an open shot on Watson, what's going through your head?

I don't think the answer is "ease up"

Everything else that happens down the road is meaningless. Maybe that player does get blackballed. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter--the damage already happened.

The institutional control over this is why no players would actually take this risk

He needs the reps. I doubt more than 1 percent of football players look at him as an enemy of the public.

He does need reps, but a few preseason reps in August aren't going to mean anything when he can't play again for three more months.

It'll mean something. Every rep matters to deal with the nerves, jeers, cheers, learning teammates, the speed of the game as opposed to two years ago even though it's preseason. He should play

This would be the hope... but I think people will have preconceived and biased opinions on Watson and the moment he gets sacked on a 3rd and short people are going to be pissed.

We're probably going to lose a game because of bad QB play, and while all the good play should make up for it, I don't have much faith in our fanbase.

I get it but the Saints turned it into a game show contest against one of the most respected QBs in the league. These guys are mercenaries when they put the helmet on.
