He doesn't break the defense at all. That is the problem. Rubio did. He'd get past the first line of defense and guys would converge on him at the basket. Most of the work is being done by the guys off ball. I think he looks good shooting it, but he seems way more comfy on the catch and shoot.
It's too bad his finishing has gotten so poor.
I like Rondo, and I am really happy they got him. I am totally willing to give him some time, but he looks rusty to me.
Rubio had 27 when he went down. He was just a different leader and he was a chaos agent creating opportunities for guys.
How much of that is him "unable" to do that at this point, vs him probably playing a bit apprehensive with a new team and new guys within the offense?
A good portion of our offense is designed to rely on drives from our guards to collapse defenses to set up layups, dump offs, or kick outs. Even Rubio saw a 50% increase in his drives per game from last year in Minny (8 per game) to this year (12 per game).
Have to imagine the same will happen with Rondo in time and he will begin to "break the defense". It's not like he is slow and has no handle at this age. That clearly isn't the case.
He's playing with no ball stoppers and no heavy ISO scorers for the first time in probably 4 years. I am sure there are going to be some growing pains as he gets acclimated to being more than a ball watcher or a guy to get into simple PnR looks or looks to off ball actions setting up shooters, which is how he was primarily used in both LAs.
