Yeah. I liked Dr. Strange as well.

However as a comic book fan, I run into a dilemma. I understand the need for character intro movies to have the back story, but it gets old for someone familiar with all the characters back stories.

Especially when the back stories are done 1) in the comics 2) in the animated movies [like Dr Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme] 3) and now the live action.

Saw the latest X-Men movie... actually it was Apocalypse, not Logan. A very dumb movie that, thinking back, has basically no regular humans of consequence other than to establish characters early on. Like we don't even see the millions of people getting slaughtered in the ridiculously over-the-top end battle, it's just DESTRUCTION LOOK HOW BAD THE BAD GUY IZZZ.

None of the X-Men movies have ever hit the mark for me.

X-Men: Decent movie but some stilted acting and strange character choices (Cyclops is a boring dick, Halle Berry is stiff as hell, plus the suits are dated crap). At least it gave us Stewart and McKellan as figureheads. Loved this movie as a kid and it's still fun but is neither as fun as Marvel or as compelling at Nolan.

X2: Praised as the best of the original trilogy, but I thought it was boring as a kid and just okay as an adult. The Nightcrawler stuff is fun but as an overall story meh.

X3: No one likes this movie. I enjoyed it in theaters but wasn't so invested in the cinematic universe to let it's problems make me mad. Overall dumb fun from my perspective.

The 3 Wolverine Movies: Have not watched.

First Class: Haven't seen. Some people praise it but I have a friend who hated it and it seems to be kinda polarizing.

Days of Future Past: Some cool elements but hampered by issues that plague the whole series; namely an over-emphasis on the characters of Wolverine (CUZ HES KOOL) and Mystique (JLAW MAKES DA MONEY). Probably the most enjoyable of the films with the added bonus of retconning shit for the sake of whiny people and agitated filmmakers.

Apocalypse: Lots of little issues, but the real problem is that there's no reason to care. The only people who I give a shit about are Professor X and Magneto. Xavier didn't really have an arc and Magneto doesn't seem to act rationally. At the end he's like a good guy? When's the 90s movie coming so he can become bad again? So many prequels to lead up to what is ultimately a lackluster trilogy. Also, all of Mystique's dialogue is garbage. "I'm not a hero" is her whole thing and then at the end oh guess what she's with the X-Men. But later she'll be bad again or something. "Forget everything you think you know." Barf.

I just want a good movie where Cyclops and Storm lead the X-Men and fight Sentinels and/or some bad guy. Treat Wolverine as he's supposed to be treated, the volatile guy on the side. They can never get the main crew together and do them right. I could imagine Marvel getting the rights back and nailing it out the gate, but with how much investment Fox has, that's probably WAYYYY down the road. And the MCU is in such advanced stages that to throw in an entire world of mutants would take time to develop anyway.

The Nice Guys - Thought it was hilarious, Ryan Gosling probably in his best performance since the Notebook. Russell Crowe and Ryan seemed like an odd pairing but they definitely worked together. Wouldn't mind a sequel if they brought back same writers and director.
One of my favorite movies from last year. Crowe and Gosling worked perfectly together.

Gosling's on a 2 movie winning streak.

Kong: Skull Island opening this week.

Early reviews say it is a solid, fun popcorn flick without much character development. While that's a little disappointing given how much acting talent they got for this movie (Brie Larson, Loki, Sam Jackson, John Goodman, John C Reilly), I thought the latest Godzilla movie spent too much time on the humans and not enough time on Godzilla. Seems like they over-corrected a bit for this movie.

Mrs. Tip and I finally saw Hacksaw Ridge last night.

Excellent flick - the first half of the movie was all about his upbringing and boot camp, and controversy over the refusal of Desmond Doss/Andrew Garfield to carry a weapon. Really well done because it set up his character for what was to happen later. Vince Vaughn had a key role as the first sergeant, and did a good job, but it was still hard not seeing him as...Vince Vaughn. Elrond played Doss' father, and both he and Garfield were excellent. Girl who played his girlfriend/wife was very good as well.

Absolutely gut-wrenching battle scenes, and it's all the harder to watch because you know it's true. Just an absolutely incredible story.

8/10.

Never been a clown-phobic guy and I'm more fascinated by serial killers than afraid of them.

But JWG was a scary motherfucker just because he was so..."normal." Just kept finding his way back into the good graces of society in spite of getting arrested, imprisoned, accused, etc.

Makes you realize these guys are running around all over the place and a lot of them want to be close to kids.

The newest Godzilla really was a fucking snoozer. That's just not something you should say about a monster movie.

I'd rather my monster movies be dumb and action packed than clever and yawn-inducing. Not saying they can't be clever and action-packed, but if I had to pick one, it'd be the former.

Agree. Sounds like this is action packed and dumb.

Kong: Skull Island

This movie was a bit all over the place. Alot of dialogue was out of place or quickly changed the tone from the previous scene. A lot of characters gave exposition for stuff they had no way of knowing. The movie was oddly paced and edited. A lot of the characters were pretty one dimensional.

That said, it was well shot. Even though Gareth Edwards didn't direct this, there were a lot of shots reminiscent of Godzilla. The acting was solid (expected given the cast), save for Toby Kebbells terrible Southern "accent".

But most of all, the scenes with King Kong were really cool and fun. They are setting up him vs Godzilla, and that will be a fun movie.

Fun popcorn flick. Go see it in 3D.

Jesus Christ Get Out is easily one of the most awful movies I have ever seen in a theater. What was suspenseful about it? It was fucking insufferable between how vanilla the dialogue was, the piss-poor acting of Allison Williams' boyfriend.

As far as the plot, I get the jealousy of superior physicality exhibited through some African-American makes -- I just thought the message presentation was stupid. Also, the means of injecting humor was dumb too.

Weak ass shit. I can't remember the last time I left a theater so mad. I'm mad that I'm that mad about a movie in general.

Reading this makes me feel like we watched 2 different movies.

Get Out was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had. Not sure what was "piss-poor" about Daniel Kaluuya's acting. I thought he killed it. To each their own, though.

Really looking forward to the next one from Jordan Peele.

Office Christmas Party - Meh/10

Watched this last night because I was in the mood for a comedy I hadn't seen before and it just felt like a cinematic shrug. Jason Bateman plays the same character he plays in literally fucking everything. TJ Miller plays a less funny version of TJ Miller. Jennifer Aniston plays her character from Horrible Bosses minus the sex addiction (so basically she's just a bitch). A bunch of other generally funny actors don't manage to be all that funny.

I am fine with dumb comedies, provided they are funny. I thought Neighbors 2 was hilarious. Dumb as shit, but it did its job and made me laugh throughout. Same with both Horrible Bosses films. This movie just wasn't funny enough to justify its existence, though. There are some laugh out loud moments, but they are so few and far between that watching it just felt like a chore. For the cast they had to work with, it was just unacceptable.

Definitely would recommend skipping this one. If you're in the mood for a dumb Christmas comedy, go with The Night Before. It's not great, but it's a hell of a lot funnier than Office Christmas Party. This one felt like everyone involved was just collecting a check and going through the motions.

Near the end when Samuel L Jackson said
bitch please
I was laughing so hard I was crying.

Thought it was a fun, entertaining movie. Can't wait for the Kong/Godzilla one.
