So I was just reading some of the regular, "why can't Frye start" type of threads all across the internet. Then after reading the same old tired Crennel quote, "I start Dilfer because he gives us the best chance to win," something hit me like a ton of briks.

What if, Crennel and Savage do not want to win because they might want to have the best spot available in next year's draft. Maybe they have their eye on a player that might go early. I dunno, and I don't want to speculte too much on this. But I beleive that maybe Frye is better than Dilfer, and Crennel knows this, thus they let Dilfer play as long as he can.

I dunno. Why would Crennel want to keep winning at the expense of Dilfer? Because Crennel keeps putting in Dilfer every chance he has and untill Dilfer can still walk. For example, last week, Dilfer limping. Both his knees were injured, and he still finished the game. That is ridiculous. And they let Frye in for one series as just to shut him up. Dilfer does not give us the best chance to win. Maybe he did at the begining of the season when Frye was not read, and when other teams were not too aware our play system, but now Frye knows the system better, and other teams have figured out our tired "Throw to the Heiden and Bryant" system. Frye can move, make plays, and does not only throw to Heiden and Bryant.

This is just another aguementative side of the arguement. I know it might sound retarded, but anything is possible in the NFL.

It's all about conditioning and grooming Frye to be a good quarterback. Who knows how well he looks in practice. But in the real game, he's already thrown 2 interceptions in 2 games.

I do have a feeling that Frye will start next game though. It seems like the opportune moment to toss him in there and to see how he holds up for a whole game. If Frye doesn't play next week, I'll be quite confounded.

A better draft spot? I can see us winning 2 games, regardless... That will push us back to #7-10. But I guess we could lose them if we continue to play terribly.

I thought Crennel was trying to foster a winning environment though. Instead of being a crappy bottom dweller, he wanted to take this team into the mediocrity level. We'll see where the trade-off lands.

so what happens if frye falls flat on his face. then what.

you did bring up some good points though law, i was thinking the same thing myself.

maybe frye hasnt done enough to win the job and dilfer has not done enough to lose it.

supposedly the pick that fyre threw was not his fault, it was BE the same reciever who dropped a ball which caused an another interception.

If Frye is not the QB of the future, then there are plenty of QBs in next year's draft that we can take our chance on. At least if we let Frye play, we will see if he is what we hope he is. But we woun't know this if we don't play him.

Regardless of how good/poor Frye performs this season, I still see us investing at least a full season in him. I don't see us giving up on him so quickly if he doesn't break out and win the rest of the games. We won't draft a QB this year. We will most likely sign up a QB to back him up, or keep Dilfer on board even. But no way we drop him right off. He's shown promise and will be given enough time to show whether he's good or not.

Ok, lets me real now. He showed promise in COLLEGE, and in PRE-SEASON. Does that mean that no, he is not THE ONE? No, its just that we don't really know how good he is because he never got the chance. And from the looks of it, it seems as if he woun't get one any time soon.

So, so far, he really hasn't shown anything at the ultimate level. But if he is given the chance, at least we will see if he even has anything at all.

Dilfer hobbled, but still starter
Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Browns quarterback Trent Dilfer will start Sunday against Jacksonville -- providing he's healthy.

Asked if it was a good time to start Charlie Frye with Dilfer banged up, coach Romeo Crennel said, "Probably not this week."

Why not?

"Because it's my choice and I'm deciding to stay with the veteran if he's healthy and he can go."

Dilfer underwent MRIs on both knees Monday, but results weren't immediately available. He injured his knees while getting drilled in Minnesota, including one play in which Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott and Browns left tackle L.J. Shelton both landed on his right knee.

"I don't anticipate that there's any structural damage," said Crennel. "He got it banged on the turf a couple of times so it's probably just sore from the beating that he took. With time, that's going to heal."

Dilfer had both knees wrapped Monday and said: "I feel all right. I'm walking, which is good. [Sunday] night was rough. But I feel better now."

Dilfer was asked how this injury feels in comparison to ones he's had in the past. In 2002, he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee in the first preseason game and missed the next four games.

"I hate speculating about that because I've had things before that have hurt so bad I didn't think I'd be able to walk and I was fine the next day," he said. "I've had stuff that hasn't hurt that bad and it holds you out. We'll let the doctors make that decision. I'll do everything in my power to heal up as fast as I can."

Dilfer said he thought he was finished after Scott and Shelton -- totaling 634 pounds -- fell on his knee in the third quarter.

"There was a sharp pain and I didn't think I'd be able to get up," he said. "But that's happened before and you get up and you move it around a little bit and you realize it's not a catastrophic injury at the time. When I realized it wasn't, I wasn't going to come out."

But with 10:50 left in the game, he had no choice. Crennel, trying to get Frye in for a series, used Dilfer's limping as one reason to play the rookie.

"It was a combination of both things," said Crennel. "We said we wanted to give [Frye] a series, Trent is out there limping around a little bit, so I said, 'Hey maybe this is the time to give him a series.' "

With the Browns trailing, 17-6, Frye promptly threw an interception thanks to a miscommunication between him and Braylon Edwards - and Crennel replaced him with Dilfer. Dilfer said he told the staff he could go back in, but Crennel said that had no bearing on his decision.

Crennel said he went with a gut feeling when he removed Frye.

"The week before, I gave him another series after the interception," said Crennel. "This week, he didn't get another series."

Crennel said he considered a number of factors, including the score. Against the Dolphins, the Browns were up, 22-0, when Frye threw his pick, which came off a bobbled Edwards pass. Sunday, the Browns were trailing, 24-6, after Minnesota converted the interception and the Vikings' defense, which dominated the line all day, had their ears pinned back.

Dilfer said his knee was "very painful" when he went back in. "But I've played a lot with pain and there's nothing heroic about it unless you play good. That was the thing I was most disappointed about.

"It's disappointing that mathematically we may be out of the wild-card race, but you play just as hard because you have pride and you owe the city, you owe the organization everything you have."

Crennel said his priority the last five games is to win, "then within trying to win, if I can find out about the quarterback, that will be helpful."

Asked if he envisions Dilfer as his starter next season, he said, "possibly." Last week, he said all spots are open in camp.

Dilfer, who was sacked a season-high five times and stripped twice, lamented his seven lost fumbles this season.

"It's unbelievable," he said. "I have no explanation. I've always prided myself on not being [a fumbler]. It's shocking. I work on it every day. There's no excuse for it."

But Dilfer earned the respect of his teammates for playing hurt. They also gave him support as their starter.

Center Jeff Faine, asked the difference between Dilfer and Frye, said: "I don't think I'm shorting Charlie when I say this, but Trent Dilfer is definitely a veteran. He's been through tough times, he's been through good times, he's seen a lot on the field and I think that's the major difference really."

This terrible move, I have to disagree with. With a hobbled "veteran," this is the right moment to start Charlie Frye. There can be no more right time than this... I just don't get it.

Ok, I have figured it out:

Frye woun't start till we are OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM THE WILD CARD hunt.

So, till that happens, then Frye will only get a series here and there.

well thats bound to happen this week :(

No, see, we are playing the Jags at home and they don't have their regular QB. So our chances of winning are good. Now this pisses me off, because we are more than likely going to win, and that mean 2 more weeks of this Dilfer/Frye fiesco.

I hope we throw bottles agian.
