Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
When your kids start school, aren’t they gone more than half the day anyway? You’d think it would be more important to be there when the kids are actually home 24/7
Dude kids are 24/7. He doesn’t want his kid bouncing from town to town when he’s in school having to re-establish him with new friends. It’s pretty thoughtful and realistic of him.
Plus his kid had three years before he goes, so there’s time.

he was really loving the team there.

I hope they find a way to keep working together
Do you know if he mentioned at all whether or not he was still spending his time with the Cavaliers? I wonder just how much he would personally be affected if the Cavs trade his expiring contract, and how, if at all, such a trade would impact the chances of Ricky playing for the Cavs next season.

I'd imagine any team that trades for Ricky has almost zero intention of retaining him for next season -- I wonder if he'd even need to report to his new team in the event of a trade. It feels somewhat callous to put him through yet another trade with his injury, but unless he planned on constantly being around the team for the remainder of the season, I feel like it wouldn't be a huge ordeal for him.

Depending on how active Koby plans on being in free agency, I could definitely see Ricky signing a one-year "prove-it" type deal for less than the MLE with a player option for a second year if he really loved playing with our team so much.

I think it’s an open secret at this point that Rubio’s contract is getting traded at some point before the deadline. It was inevitable since the Cavs declined to get the DPE when he went down.

Wait, the Cavs declined to apply for a DPE? Or do you mean they applied for one and were denied? I was under the impression that it was a foregone conclusion that we would be getting the DPE. Makes no sense not to apply, there's nothing to lose right?

They dont talk about the Cavs at all, which if find it annoying. He had his surgery the 5th of January in New York and he wants to start rehab in Barcelona. I think a 2 yr/20 M partially guaranteed would make it for him.

We declined to apply. And there is a reason we didn’t, it’s because using it would almost certainly put us over the tax line and we’re hard capped this year.

We’ll get better use out of trading Rubio’s contract outright.

That's really weird, no offense but do you have a source? Just makes no sense at all why they wouldn't apply at all -- sure, they probably won't use it but what the hell is the harm in applying?

I can’t find a direct source, except this:

But...there was no announcement that the Cavs had applied for a DPE (those things are public record) by the Jan 15th deadline, so have to assume we willingly let the deadline pass without applying.

And to answer your question, there’s no reason to apply if we already knew in advance we weren’t going to use it, as I said in my earlier post. The tax & hard cap is a real issue the team wants to avoid this year.

Oh I totally agree that staying out of the tax this year is a big thing. It just feels like malpractice to not even apply just in case an amazing opportunity pops up. There's no downside to applying right?

I did see that Dammarell tweet. I just assumed that he was pointing out a formality and that we had already applied for it. I wasn't aware that these things are public record, however.

If my assumption that there is no downside to applying for the DPE is correct, it would disappoint me to no end if we really didn't bother applying. That tells me that either Koby is not tryjng to overturn every stone to improve our franchise, or that Dan issued a directive to stay out of the tax this year. As a Koby supporter, I have a really tough time believing either of those scenarios is true.

I’d just really curious to know if Rubio wants to be here after this year. And if so, how he would feel about signing for the MLE if we trade his contract. I almost feel like it’s unlikely and if we trade him, it’s basically saying goodbye to Ricky for good. Which really sucks because I’d love to see him on this team next season.

To me it seems most likely that he's rehabbing to play out his career in Spain. Probably doesn't want to publicly say it yet.

He's already made a ton of money, I don't think he needs a few more years of the NBA grind before calling it quits. He'll get a big contract in Europe if he wants it.
