Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Agree. Slight overpay, but Rubio fills a big hole. I think they were gonna target a PG in round 2, but that’s not happening anymore.
Yeah I was thinking they would deal one of those '22 SRP's to draft a PG in round 2 of today's draft. That seems a little less likely after this deal but who knows...

Backup PG was a large hole Sexton or no Sexton.
True. I was looking at this trade all wrong. Backup PG was a glaring hole and I definitely didn’t want to overpay for TJ or Caruso. So I get it. Plus the Cavs keep MLE for another player.

Cavs need to add shooting though. Badly. Wings with size is also another glaring need.

This roster needs a shape up.

Hart?

So we saved them 4m (13m vrs 17m) in salary and gave cash and a 2nd rounder. Ran trade machine and shows even trade at -1 for both teams without the cash and 2nd rounder. Seems to me we should have gotten the second round pick.
I wouldn't recommend using the trade machine to evaluate trades.

It's nice to do a quick and dirty check to see if a trade works salary-wise, but their "values" are pretty worthless.

Giving up a wing that can shoot for guard that can't just seems odd to me. I just don't think we can get a wing that can shoot with the MLE. I do think we could have gotten a backup PG with the MLE. Hopefully there are more moves to come.

This feels like a short term move but I feel like we could get a long term backup PG in this draft. It something we should have been looking for a while now. I guess it's one year of Rubio so we could still pick up someone to be a long term solution.

It allows us to trade differently. Salaries have to match.
While technically true, the odds of this actually having any realistic impact on potential future trades is virtually insignificant.

I hope we target Otto Porter

I'm going to go ahead and call you on Taurean Prince as "a wing who can shoot."

He got paid like a wing who could potentially learn to shoot... then went on to drop from .441 from the field to under .400 after the contract.

The trade fills a huge hole on the team. Ricky is a taller PG with a pass-first mentality who can pair with Sexton off the bench. Sexton looked his best in the handful of games Delly was healthy.

Okoro moves to shooting guard next to Garland, which is where the Cavs wanted him before Drummond had a meltdown.

Starters so far:

Allen/Mobley/Nance/Okoro/Garland

Bench: Love, Wade, Cedi, Sexton, Rubio
You actually believe the Cavs are going to move a 24 point scorer (Sexton) to the bench for an inconsistent player (Okoro)?

If he could have kept up his 40% from 3 and stayed healthy, I think he could have gotten us a good value at the deadline or even before. A SF/PF that can shoot 37-40% from 3 and give you good defense is always valuable to contending teams.

I'm just not sure if we want to move Rubio at the deadline anyone would want him beyond his expiring contract. Giving up 17 million in salaries for a backup PG isn't something a contender usually has on their roster waiting to be traded.

They were going to do it last season...

Ben said they thought about doing it last year when they tried to ask Drummond to go to the bench. He said after Drummond refused, they scrapped the idea.

Without Prince who is even better than Okoro at SF right now? We going to start Cedi or Windler? Nance isn't a SF and we would have terrible spacing if they try to start him with Garland, Okoro, Mobley, and Allen. Garland is the only real 3pt threat of the group.

I'll be honest. I forgot he was on our team until I read this post.

I watched him play against Japan. He can play in limited minutes and is a threat offensively. In fact he played really well against Argentina making 5 3s. He can still play.

Love his passing and be a great mentor to our guards too.
He'll only be 31 when the season starts. He's got a few years left in him. Nice to get one of those years. He can run the offense off the bench and play D. Will make the bench better and can help Garland continue to grow.
