Robin Lopez: Joining his twin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My feeling about Lopez is similar to my feeling about Rubio. What is left in the tank? I’m not too worried about his regular rotation minutes, because there may not be a lot (although it would be great to have a rotation caliber backup). But Allen will miss games - he always does. If we need a backup 5 who can eat up 20 minutes for 3 weeks, can Lopez do it?

And our backup 5 last year, before Moses, was…?

KLove is a 5 off the bench. There aren’t many bench bigs that can overpower him. And he’s a matchup problem on the other end, for some teams. This is nothing new.

Maybe give up on this argument. We don’t know exactly how they’ll use Lopez, but it’s clear that he is an improvement over Ed Davis. Can’t argue that. In my opinion, Robin will have a small role on some nights and have some DNP-CD’s on some other nights. Depends on the matchup.
I just enjoy the fact that there's a fiery debate on Robin Lopez.

That's how you know it's July.

His career MPG numbers aren't bad:

The outrage over a vet minimum signing is pretty entertaining

Hollinger's BORD$ C Rankings:

26. Robin Lopez, Magic

RoLo only played 36 games for the rebuilding Magic while often watching inferior players take the court, an odd state of affairs given that he was pretty good a year earlier in Washington. He’s a plus post defender and can still score on his weird array of hook shots, which would make him a good pick-up for a win-now team needing another veteran big.

Edit: somehow I had the 2021 Lopez ranking listed here before

Similarly to @PIP this was one of the guys I wanted last season.

At a vet minimum price there is nothing to complain about here. Awesome signing.
It's a culture signing first and foremost. Koby loves the culture more than anything else.

Betting that professionals like Robin and Ricky will teach the youngins how to fish for themselves, and our value lies in their growth

That's what I'm saying! I need this shit in my life.

Hollinger's FA C Rankings:

20. Robin Lopez, Wizards

I’m a bit surprised that BORD$ viewed Robin Lopez’s prospects so dimly, as he shot a career-high-smashing 63.3 percent from the floor last season thanks to a right-hand hook shot that seemingly never missed. So effective was that shot that the Wizards even played through him in the post at times, with RoLo pumping in 21.9 points per 100 possessions.

The rest of his game wasn’t as sharp. Lopez is a major minus on the boards (just a 10.6 percent rebound rate) and really struggles to defend post-ups. He also forces Washington to play a drop coverage, as he’s vulnerable on the perimeter in switches..
Yup, that's Lopez alright. The problem with his automatic hook shot is that he needs like 20 seconds to prepare for it each time, with crazy spins and upfakes. In other words, he's an amazing ball stopper if you make the mistake of running actual plays for him down there. Once he gets the ball, it's not coming back out.

It does bother me we can't run the switch scheme we do with Allen and Mobley if Lopez is out there... but imagining him as a slightly more skilled version of Ed Davis in the mascot role makes me happy

Lopez has his warts but he's smart and understands NBA basketball. Does a lot of the off ball dirty work (sometimes literally) that doesn't show up in the box score.

It's a one-year league minimum deal so whatever. He's another guy we can bring off the bench besides Stevens when the other team is playing bully ball and the officials are letting it go. He sets hard picks. So there's that. Otherwise, he plays like he has has cement in shoes.

I really don't see Love being a part of any "big" rotation next season. He just spent all season bombing from the perimeter and only ventured to the paint on defense to draw charges. That's the direction we're going.

Next season, he'll be a year older and slower and hopefully play a lot less minutes. And definitely not at the 5.

I see Lopez directly backing up Allen and playing 10-15 minutes per game. That is NOT Ed Davis.

Great signing IMO.

1) We really needed a legit backup center. Most guys would want too many minutes but Lopez knows how to play a role and will slot in much better than Davis or Brown when injuries happen.
2) Vet minimum so he's cheap but another guy who can help mentor our young squad.
3) Without Varejao on the team our hair lineup has really been missing something.
4) Maybe he'll murder Sir CC.

Nonetheless, he’d be a candidate to return next season or have other interest around the taxpayer MLE or room exception.
To be fair, the outrage is coming from one person. :chuckle:
