Post Disclaimer: This post is not to ruin the excitement of the off season, and the chance for us to lure in Ray Allen, and sign every other great player, but to bring into reality we won't be able to fill all our needs that we need filed to bring us into championship form in one year.

Now, we've seen how championship teams are built. You can look at detroit, both times. L.A. over the decades. Chicago for 6 years. All these teams took time to build through the draft, and develope. Many years to grow together. In reality we have right now on our roster for next year...

We have needs at the center, the point guard, the shooting guard, the bench. We need at least 4 more players added to this roster. We have 20 million in cap room at least. so you can say we have 5 million to spend at each position. BUT, the kicker is we won't be able to fill all these positions in one off season with out a superior G.M. and coach who have decided what kind of team they want to build. The direction of this franchise is at a stand still. Are we a running- no D team made ever so popular by the mavs, and now the suns. Are we a half court muck it up, grind it out ruff D playing team? What are we doing this off season? These are the biggest questions that need to be answered beside the personnel. The blue print of the team needs to be built, and filed. Coaches, adn G.M's need to be positioned. :chuckles:

Now, getting past the 'plan', cleveland has never been able to attract star power via free agency. We now have star power of our own however in LeBron James to help us out in that department though. Pieces in this puzzle need to fit into place via free agency since we have no draft picks to work with this year. This is another strangle hold put on us by management throwing around draft picks to bring in the marginally talented players. Everything seems to be working against us in C-town. With at least 4 needs to fill, more most likely, it will all have to be done by bidding war in the off season. Very rarely are teams able to build themselves in free agency. Free agancy is more where you get to add 1 nice piece MAY BE! It is not a right, let me repaet FREE AGENCY IS NOT A RIGHT, IT'S A PRIVILEDGE! We can only hope we can grab more than one piece to build our team since management has royally screwed us in the draft.

More than likely we'll be looking at another mediocre year next year. Because we have been put in a position where we are going to have to out bid other teams for free agents, this will clog our cap space, and force us to be able to make less moves. We have been left on the out side looking in so to speak, all we can do is hope LeBron is attractive enough to get at least one free agent to build our team on going into next year. It's the baby steps that will get us to where we want to go, we won't be able to sign 5, or 6 free agents like some think. It is nothing more than a pipe dream to even consider it, especially with as marginally talented as this team is, I will be very surprised to see free agents come our way because of how poor this team is all around. Being overlooked it how it's always been, and it may continue to be this way. Teams are built by the draft, it has always been this way, and it won't change now, especially not for us. :thumbdown It may take us several years to reach our goal of a contender because of our poor managerial decision makers, and it more than likely will, but just remember rome was not built in a day, and the patient ones always reap the greatest virtues. :gap:

Wait for '07-'08 :chuckles:

Where we land on other free agents depends on Z's contract. We may not be able to fill all the hole with our free agency, but we can certainly do so with some smart trades.

E-light,

as much as i agree with you, we wont be contenders overnight, look at what the bulls are doing and the wizards. im not so sure about what the wizards did the last offseason but the bulls didnt do much. they didnt land FA, but they are playing now and we are talking about the offseason. they were crappy last year and now they are better than us. this happened in one year.

The bulls drafts are starting to pay off. This is why they are good. thye have been so bad, they have stokc piled top ten picks, now the picks are starting to develope, and come into their own.

Unfortunately, we have very few draft picks to build our team on. No picks this year.

I do agree that the Cavs aren't going to be able to fill every need this offseason. This is still a building process and will take more time.
The 1st thing I would do is make a run at a big time major FA this summer. The cap space the Cavs wil have won't be there in the future. They need to use it on a major core piece and not just on role players. It is much easier to acquire role players than big time players. It can be done with cap exceptions and veteran minimum signings in future seasons.

Ray Allen would be the 1st player I'd go after. He is the #1 FA wing player available and would be a perfect fit in Cleveland. Redd is #2 with Hughes #3. I don't see Hughes leaving Washington though.
I like Joe Johnson but he restricted status makes him a risk. Most reports have had Phoenix matching any offer and they coudl tie up 15 days before they do match possibly causing the Cavs to miss out on other top FA's.

The Cavs do have a lot of needs to fill but it's not possible to get them all filled at once.

Kudos on this thread. In addition to the cap and timing constraints that others have noted, another reason for not trying to rebuild the Cavs in a day is that the nucleus needs to play and grow together over time.
