If I am remembering correctly, the Cavs were named just that because it was a fan contest to name the team through a newspaper, and somehow Cavaliers won. It just sounds good, alliteration and all, but has virtually 0 to do with Cleveland.

Alliteration counts for a lot... Alliterative team names are automatically better than ones that aren't. It's practically the whole reason that the Jacksonville Jaguars became a franchise. It CERTAINLY wasn't due to the potential to fill a stadium...
