Scrappy small market underdog hero redsox pay <edit>51.1 million for Japanese Pitcher

Who's the evil empire now?

I hope daisuke blows out his shoulder and the Sox are screwed again.

Why did we sign this guy? Japanese pitchers are good for a year, then they fall of the face of the map. This is such a yankees move and i hate it.

This is exactly why MLB is such a joke. These payrolls are ridiculous.

42 million is for exclusive negotiating rights. Much like a transfer fee in soccer. He'll still command something like a 5 year 50 million dollar deal, and the sox will be paying him the equivalent of about 18 million per season at least.

I think he will be good, but not 42 million good, mybe 20 million good.

I'm with RHF on this one - I don't wanna see the guy get hurt, I just hope he blows for the Sox. Something has to be done to stop this spending in baseball. It is beyond comprehension how much mediocre players are now making. I don't care what anyone says I will never be happy unless the Red Sox and Yankees lose. Serves them right for driving up these salaries.

The only way to fix MLB is by contraction... get rid of the Yankees and Red Sox and adopt a salary cap. But it will never happen and we will be forcefed the hype about how great both teams are every year, when all they really did was outbid all other teams for every player on their rosters. It is sickening and I will root against them every season.

So because your team cheaps out on players and loses them to other teams that will pay big bucks for them that makes them bad? your mad because your team wont put the money together to put a decent team on the field? guess what, Fenway Park has sold out EVERY game EVERY year for the past 5 years, same with Yankee Stadium, people will give an arm and a leg to see them play. And even when either teams is on the road, the opposing teams stadium has a significant amount of yankee fans or red sox fans. When was the last time the Jake was sold out? it was probably against either the Yankees or Red Sox,

So maybe from the stand point of the slary cap, these teams are bad, but last i checked these 2 teams COMBINED have won 1 World Series in the past 6 years, neither team is dominating, the Sox missed the playoffs, the yankees got outed in the first round. It may look like a bad season, but you know what? Both teams make more and more money each year to spend on players. you want your team to do that? go to the damn ballpark and support your team like you did when they winning in the 90s.

chiefwahoo, i have a question for you...do you drink Starbucks?

The Indians made a bid on Iwamura, a 1B,2B,3B,LF,CF that has hit really well in Japan. That winner will be announced on Thursday.

NAPLES, Fla. -- Theo Epstein took in the annual general manager's dinner Monday night at the Naples Grande Resort Hotel, and while he might be in front of cameras Tuesday night answering questions as the top bidder for Daisuke Matsuzaka, Epstein also disclosed on Monday that he has made formal offers to two free-agent pitchers.

Epstein also indicated he hoped to make a few more offers for free agents before he left the GM meetings on Thursday.

When and if the Sox nail down Matsuzaka they will have a starting rotation of Jonathan Papelbon, Josh Beckett, Matsuzaka, Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield. They also have the luxury of Julian Tavarez, who pitched well as a fifth starter, who will likely move back to the bullpen.

There was some speculation that Epstein has some interest in Barry Zito, a Scott Boras client who also represent Matsuzaka, Jason Schmidt and Ted Lilly. But it would appear there might not be any room at the inn for those high-priced pitchers when Matsuzaka is signed.

There are also second-tier types like Gil Meche, Miguel Bautista and Mark Mulder that might fit a need.

The Sox, like several other teams, are also looking to upgrade their bullpen. Names like Justin Speier, Eric Gagne, Scott Schoeneweis have all been mentioned as possible targets.

The Sox might also target outfielders J.D. Drew and Frank Catalanotto and infielder Julio Lugo, but Epstein had not made offers to any of them as of Monday.

Yes because they are driving up the cost of competing for the smaller market clubs. I'm not a fan of Dolan but how can he compete with the Yankees and Red Sox payrolls? There's a reason why the NBA and NFL instituted salary caps - to maintain competitive balance. I'm happy the Red Sox and Yanks only have one World Series win in the last 6 years but the fact remains they make the playoffs EVERY SINGLE YEAR because they are the only teams that can overpay to acquire the best available free agent talent every year.
