Second half 22 GM Thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With the game moved to tomorrow, I'm going to take a look at the ML depth as we get closer to the offseason.
C- B Nalor, Lavastida, Maile(arbitration)
1B- J Naylor, Miller, Arias
2B- Gimenez, Miller, Freeman, Arias
3B- JRam, Arias
SS- Rosario, Arias, Gimenez
LF- Kwan, Brennan, Gonzalez, Palacios
CF- Straw, Brennan, Benson
RF- Gonzalez, Brennan, Benson, Jones
SP- Bieber, TMac, Quantrill, Civale, Plesac, Morris, Pilkington, Curry, Gaddis
BP- Clase, Karinchak, Stephan, Hentges, DLS, Morgan, Vargas, Sandlin

Prospects that should be ready at some point next season:
1. Valera
2. Rocchio
3. Battenfield
4. Williams
5. Bibee
6. Espino is a maybe, but his innings will be a limiting factor

Possible trade candidates due to depth or possible circumstance:
1. Bieber if he doesn't get extended
2. Plesac
3. Civale
4. Miller
5. Freeman
6. Rosario
7. Palacios
8. Jones
9. Brennan
10. Straw
11. Gaddis
12. Pilkington
13. Curry
14. Arias

Looks pretty solid. Think you could add Kwan to the CF depth and Arias to the LF as well.

I'll be very curious to hear about Arias's winter activites.

Starting to doubt Palacios is around next year as well.

I failed to add guys like Miko, Herrin and Misiaszek. All 3 are BP options for the 23 season. I'm especially high on Herrin.

@sportscoach @CDAV45

There are three versions of a trade proposal at BTV (104400, 104405 and 104407, respectively) that depict a three way deal between the Blue Jays, the Marlins and the Guardians.. You might take a look...

No one all of them...

We aren't moving Karinchak or Rocchio for a Catcher...

I'm not against getting Kirk (his bat is legit) nor getting Jensen, but I am not losing Karinchak nor Rocchio in the process...

Kirk's bat is legit, but we all know the other expectations Cleveland has of their catchers and Kirk does not match that in my opinion.

Okay I made this for fun... @hockeyjohn @CDAV45 @Gson

DBacks get...
SP Bieber
SS Rosario

Cleveland gets...
SP Pfaadt
SP Walston
SP Kelly
C Kelly
1B Walker
RP Mantiply
(Probably cash as well)

Well then...

Make a move for Woodruff to replace Bieber (Woodruff isn't as durable, but solid...)

Brewers get...
SP Plesac
SP Allen
3B/RF Jones
INF Tena
OF Chourio (to let him play with his brother)

Cleveland gets...
SP Woodruff
3B/SS Johan Barrios
LHP Russel Smith

Our rotation would end up being...

TMac, Woodruff, Quan, Civale and Kelly...

Boredom caused all of this btw... what are your thoughts?

It's fun to contemplate trade ideas, but I doubt they do much this offseason. Why would/should they? Seems irrational to think the youngest team in the league won't improve with experience.

@sportscoach

I know you would like to see a LHRP added and have a few concerns for the BP, but I really think you should take a good look at what Herrin was doing the last 3rd of the season. We have Vargas who is going to be a stud. Miko and Misiaszek aren't talked about enough either.

The OF is a logjam.

The MIF is a logjam.

The rotation is a logjam.

3B is locked up with a pretty good player for years to come.

1B is locked up with Naylor, but a RHH to share those duties with would be ideal.

C looks to be in good hands with Bo, but somebody like Jansen would make me extremely happy. He could DH when not catching.

That's it. A RHH C/1B/DH is the lone "need" if you even want to call it that. More like a desire than a need.

I .... That's it. A RHH C/1B/DH is the lone "need" if you even want to call it that. More like a desire than a need.
The adage..when you think you have enough pitching.. go get more.. It doesn't say from where.. In the Guardians case.. internal options are plentiful.. and highly talented.. They could be the answer..

Btw... the Plesac performance as a reliever has to be opening some eyes of the CleFO talent evaluators. He has been nothing short of amazing in that role since his return... Agree with you on C-Var and Herrin, btw..

But.. the catching situation remains the MOST dire area of need.. or concern or whatever descriptive word you would like to add here.. A RHH C that can play 1B.. and / or a RHH 1B and a C.. (two pieces) are the two spots that remain as consideration for the Guardians after this season..

Funny thing & as a target to satisfy the above.. one of the biggest thorns in the sides of the Cleveland franchise (Guardians and Indians) over the last decade, Jose Abreu is a 1B, FA, Right Handed, and not being considered for retention by the CWSox..

The catching situation, will have to be a trade.. Having Bo Naylor is a good thing.. but it's still the weakest area of the club.. Shoring that area up WITH Bo would make this a much stronger club in 2023 and beyond..

That post was a little more on the fun side, since I saw others posting with a deal between Brewers and Guardians and Bieber to the DBacks... They originally added McCarthy and Perdomo, to the two pitchers, which on paper, isn't a bad move but we didn't need them from the DBacks so I changed things up a bit lol Woodruff could be a target though if Milwaukee puts him on the trade block and we move Plesac. If we target Lopez or Woodruff, Plesac could be a piece back to fill in the short term for either Club.

I didn't mean to imply that it was a "bad move" or even a bad idea. Only that there is so much young talent to still sort through that additions are likely going to be far and few between. It's hard to argue with the success this team is currently having and the forecast for improvement.

@Gson I wonder if we could target an Abreu? Not ideal, but a solid veteran...
It appears the Cubs are supposed to have the inside track on Jose Abreu.. but.. that's normal for them.. They give the appearance that they're in on everyone.. and then.. pooof.. pick up the left overs or the guys who's ask is so egregious they end up over playing their hand..

read: a Scott Boras Client..

At this time.. the Guardians represent a PLAYOFF team with solid pitching.. good bullpen and young talented position players. Abreu is already 35 years old... so a long term contract isn't happening.. his 2022 numbes are about as good as any he's ever posted save for a slight (very small) drop off in his power numbers.. Given the status of the Guardians.. his familiarity of the pitching in the division.. and the projected available budget... a short term (2 or 3 years?) could bring him onboard.. We'll see...

I have changed my mind, do not trade Rosario/Plesac this off-season. They key to this off-season will be to sign and lock up TMac and Gimenez to long-term contracts and see what Bieber wants to do going forward, that's it, period. The goal for 2023 is to win another WC/Division slot and see what happens again in the playoffs (gain experience). Yet, the icing on the cake is 2024.

We can still trade Plesac and Rosario during the 2023 season when teams maybe more desperate at deadline and we see how our 3 stars for early/mid 2023 are doing Naylor, Rocchio and Valera. It will also give us more time to see how our late-2023/early-2024 prospects of Lavastida, Martinez, Noel, Bibee, Espino and Williams are doing in minors.

For me, the a playoff roster for late 2023/ early 24 of
C - Naylor/Lavastida/Hedges-Maile
1B - Naylor/Noel/Arias (super-utility)
2B - Gimenez/Martinez/Freeman
SS - Rocchio/Gimenez
3B - Jose
OF/DH - Kwan, Valera, Oscar, Brennan, Straw, Jones/Benson (w Halpin getting closer)
P - TMac, Quant, Bibee, Williams, Espino, Bieber, Morris, Allen
Relief - Clase, Stephan, Vargas, Kar, Hentges, Santos, Morgan, Miko/Misieszek or Curry/Cantillo/Battenfield (for legnth that Pilk/McC gave you)

Is incredible to lock in and see what you have. Thus,

Off Roster - Hedges (sign closer to opening day), Maile, Gose (as 41st), trade 2-3 of McCarty, Pilkington, Gaddis, Santos, Palacios, Benson (for fliers and more important space)
Add - Martinez, Cantillo, Battenfield, maybe Hankins/Miko

If you can swing a trade - look at Huff (C-1b) or Hunt(C Tampa-AA),

Mid-season trades
Rosario - Value to Cle is placeholder to Rocchio......Value to other teams - mid-season injury SS replacement
Plesac - Value to Cle is placeholder to lengthened Morris.....Value to other teams - injury replacement
Civale - Please holder to Espino/Bibee/Williams/Allen Jr

Not really for trades because if Cle FO wasn't going to block this year's rookies, next year's rookies are even stronger (top-100 types)
SP - getting Mahle for 2 years was and upgrade but also contract length to avoid blocking Espino, WIlliams, Bibee -- so why get one (on 1 year) now when we can just keep Plesac/Civale till that time
OF - Yes, if you can get that stud CF and 1B/C for Bieber then do it ... but for a smaller trade it is just blocking Valera for next year, Noel/Halpin for following year. If Straw (w/ Brennan) is our weakest hitter with Naylor/Lava/Maile at catcher, can we live with it till Halpin is ready in mid-24? Yes
1B - I like the idea of platoon of Noel/Arias (R) and Naylor/Jones (L) ... again, if we can get Vargas for Bieber, then do it. But, I am not trading big chips to get the deal done unless Bieber is out the door already (Arias/Noel will fill in fine with Naylor/Jones).
C - If we can get a right handed platoon for Naylor to compete w/ Lavastida, I am all for it.
Loogy - Just takes up a valuable 40 man slot when we have Hentges on 40 and Mis and Herrin off 40 who can fill that role along with Cantillo in pinch (and to gain good experience in a playoff series).
